Oliveere smirks at Edward's zealous desire for work. "Why don't you help my boatswain Wallace repair our other longboat? It got a bit chewed up after a near miss against some sahuagin a few days back and he hasn't got around to working on it yet. Look for the blue-skinned fellow with the big eyes."
"Excellent! Gentlemen, Captain, if you'll excuse me" Edward nods at his new companions and exits the quarters to find Wallace, muttering 'Blue skin, big eyes' as he leaves.
“I am but a humble servant of Sarenrae. “ says Codric “ I have some skill as a healer. I can fight with my shield and mace but I must admit that I am more comfortable healing wounds that provoking them. I guess that the little divine energy that I can muster will be helpful in the task ahead. “
With a slight sigh, "I am skilled with both blade and bow. Striking from the shadows or hitting someone's flank is where I work best, hit and run tactics if you will."
"Well now that we all know the best points of the others perhaps we could find a suitable strategy to deal with those undeads. I suggest, though, that we perform as much scouting from the ship as we can before we go ashore, that way we could see the better spot to set the first ambush to the lesser undead once we had a beachead stablished. " he says looking to his companions in search for acceptance of that plan. He knows is not to much but then again, he is no general nor a fighter.
"I would happy to have Quoth do a flyover to look for a suitable place to make landfall" says Kriv.
"I do think we should get a good nights rest as well. We should have plenty of time to strategize when we're nearby and have more information." Kriv adds that as he stands up. "As such, I am going to go back to my bunk, read a bit and go to sleep. Thank you for the wine Captain"
Draythos listened to each of them in turn, quietly soaking in the information. Once the rest had said their piece, he took his turn as was only fair. "While I may look like a swordsman, my real skill lies in hand to hand combat. My skill with these swords is second only to that." He placed his hand on the hilts for a second before standing, careful not to hit the ceiling as he does.
The Goliath bowed his head to the Captain. "An excellent wine indeed." After that, he would make his way back to the room and lie down using his bag as a pillow, his swords resting next to him.
After a long rest, Draythos would wake and go through a series of hand to hand exercises in an open, out of the way corner of their assigned room.
Raziel nodded, "Thank you for everything this far Captain. My last question, is there anywhere I can go where I wont be disturved to go through my morning ritual before landfall?"
"The crow's nest is probably empty. We're within sight of the cliffs and the light is good, so there's no real need for it. Hope you don't mind heights," Oliveere replies to the Marquesian.
"It sounds like we have a plan. We should arrive sometime tomorrow, late morning or early afternoon, perhaps. In the meantime, get some rest or help the crew out if you feel like it. Just don't cause any trouble on my ship, for gods' sake."
Raziel spends his passive time going over the various details of the mission the remainder of the night till sleep takes him, where a black journal he has resting in his backpack begins recording his dream.
The night comes and passes uneventfully as you all are lulled to sleep by the swaying of the Snow Queen. When the morning comes, every man is given some salted pork and dried fruits with grog as a breakfast. Oliveere puts some of you to work repairing parts of the ship, keeping an eye out for hostile parties, trimming the sails to catch the wind, and other such tasks. You become pretty well-acquainted with the Queen's boatswain Wallace Ketch, a water genasi and skilled seaman from the Menagerie Coast of Wildemount. He takes a particular liking to Edward given that the two share a love of the sea and some pretty damn good stories regarding their travels across Exandria.
Around two o'clock Captain Oliveere informs you that Shadewatch Cove is getting near. She orders the crew to batten the hatches and get ready for some tight sailing as she personally takes the helm and navigates the labyrinth of wrecked ships and jagged rocks that guard the path to the pirate lair. It takes about fifteen minutes of deadly serious concentration and swift reactions from Oliveere and her crew as you wait with bated breath for the arrival at the cove or a sudden wreck in the ice-cold waters of the sea. Finally, Oliveere orders her crew to hoist the main sails and drop anchor; you've arrived outside of the Cove.
Embedded into the white cliffs of the Salted Bluffs about a few hundred feet away is the mouth of a large cavern, about 60 to 80 feet tall and wide; it's hard to tell from this distance. Two thick stone columns act as natural pillars supporting the rock above and provide an entrance for those coming into the Cove. There is a small area of shoreline where a ramshackle dock has been thrown together and some weathered rowboats are tied up and bobbing with the ebb and flow of the tide. Another smaller cavern opens up near the dock, but it is walled up to keep strangers out. The iron door built into the wall hangs ajar. It is dark inside the cavern and you cannot see within.
"Alright, gents. Here you are. Don't forget about our flare plans, Smithson. Red for emergency, green for all clear. Mr. Ketch, would you be so kind as to drop them off?" Oliveere asks, turning to her water genasi boatswain.
"Course, captain. Urz, Velkin, Rosh, give me a hand, eh?" Wallace asks in a voice as clear as a running stream.
A beefy half-orc man, a lean half-elf whose gender is not clear, and a stocky human man hop into two of the boats and you all climb aboard. They take you across the choppy seawater and to the strand a few yards away from the makeshift docks. You disembark and steel yourselves for the danger that is ahead. Urz and Velkin return to the ship as Wallace tells Rosh to hold a bit.
"Good luck, hearties. Our ballistae are lined up on that wall," he says, pointing to the nearby entrance. "Edward, as soon as you shoot one of those flares, the quartermaster will give the order to fire and we'll come running to get you. Give them hell!"
As the two sailors head back to their vessel, the entrance to Shadewatch Cove beckons.
Having spent his morning meditating over his blades, Raziel remains perched on a shaft just above the crow's nest looking out into the distance. His keen silver eyes took in the sight before him and with a nod the elf comes down.
"Well gents, are we ready for this?" Raziel looks to his companions. "There's no turning back once we set foot off of this ship."
Seeing the elf return to the deck, Ed nods to Raziel as he dons his equipment, "Ah the crow returns from his nest" he says in jest, "Aye I'm ready, this will be fun!"
As the group disembarks Ed shouts after the water Genasi, "Ha! they won't know what's hit 'em." He points at Wallace with a smile, "Wallace, you and I are going for a drink once this is done. I'll be sure to have a bloody good story to tell!"
He regroups with the rest and says, "Right lads, what's the plan? You scouting ahead, Raz?"
“May Sarenrae light guide us” says Codric “Let’s give those poor souls the rest they should get.” He is back in his armor and now has the shield and mace ready.
Draythos shields his eyes against the morning sun as he makes his way above deck, his two slightly curved swords resting in their usual place on his left hip. The silvered longsword that Raziel had given him before getting on the Snow Queen rested across his back so he hilt was above his right shoulder.
The Goliath apologizes as his shear size nearly capsizes the row boat as he climbs in before settling into a seat. He disembarks with the rest and raises a hand in appreciation and farewell to the sailors that dropped them off.
"Unfortunately Quoth can't see very well in the dark, so I don't think he'll be very useful here" Kriv waves his hand and Quoth disappears to his pocket dimension and begins walking towards the mouth of the cave
"But perhaps I can provide another way for us to see" as he extends his staff forward pointing inside the mouth of the cave. Suddenly a burst of flames erupts from the floor inside the cavern...
Kriv cast Create Bonfire as far back into the cave that he could. Consequences be damned :)
With the bonfire created Kriv also uses his staff and smacks it into his chest while muttering another incantation. A shimmering light briefly appears around his body before fading.
Raziel's eye twitched as soon as bonfire was cast. The elf glared at the wizard before stepping ajead of the party. "Do me a favor and keep the light low and far away enough from me so I can't be seen by our foes." With that Raziel dashes off into the shadows staying about 25 to 30 feet ahead of everyone in a low crouch.
Raziel darts from cover to cover, shadow to shadow making sure each step is silent as he keeps an eye out for traps and any threats. The elf keeps his hands near his daggers as he moved stealthly.
"Well I was going to light a torch but that'll work" Ed quips as Kriv ignites the cave. He waits for Raz to get a small distance ahead and moves into the cave quietly with the rest of the group, keeping an eye out for dangers that may present themselves to the bulk of the party.
