Service is one of the older Warforged still operational and unlike most Warforged Service wasn’t built to fight, but to serve. In particular Service was custom built for the great Ashrem d'Cannith to entertain, serve and look after the guests on Ashrem’s airships. Service isn’t sure what it’s original designation was but they have answered calls for service for so long that it has become their name, although there are some faded letters with 2X4B on their shoulder.
Service helped on Airships for many years and is rightly proud of their skills and all the grand families they have served from House Medani on trips to Breland to House Phiarlan in Thrane.
Service entertained guests, helped them when they were ill, diffused arguments and learned a lot about the history of Eberron along the way.
This all changed when the airship Service was onboard, The Nova, crashed in the Q’Barran Jungle. Service was the only survivor and spent 17 years waiting for rescue. Now back in a society they don’t really understand, with no clear role or goal in life, other than to serve. Service is looking for new meaning and people to help.
Happy to create a joint back story if someone wants to have rescued Service from the Q’Barran Jungle.
Talis was a very young man when he signed up to serve in the Last War. The Blood of Vol had just become the official religion of Karrnath, and he saw the way that everything seemed to change for the better. He signed up to serve under one of their militant orders, and fight for his country and his faith, as a "Seeker of the Divinity Within."
He fought for many, many years. Most of his friends died around him, and the comrades who came to replace those friends, too. Survival mode had taken over and he didn't even question it when the Order started reanimating the dead to continue fighting. He even learned how, and did it himself.
Later, when the Emerald Claw was outlawed and ousted, Talis was among those charged with war crimes. There was no direct evidence to say he'd participated in the acts he was accused of - killing civilians to raise as undead shock troops- but it didn't matter. Guilt by association. Prison was a mercy.
But time has passed, and Karrnath's rulers have found new purpose for him. He was offered a pardon in exchange for service as a double agent infiltrating the Emerald Claw.
This begins with Service. Service was aboard the Nova when it crashed. Talis had been tasked with finding Service in the hopes that Talis could speak to the deceased warforged and learn secrets of the Great Houses contained in its mind... Including the location of certain treasure that remains of interest to many, the Dragon's Eye. When he found Service still alive, he altered the plan accordingly and escorted Service home. Talis continues to try to gain his trust, signing the both of them up with a party of hirelings headed towards the goal.
------------
I know this was long, and I'm not sure if it conflicts with details of the campaign. I'm just going based on what I could find online.
My plan is for Talis to be a melee man who can also cast spells. Not looking to make him a healer. He's a beast of war.
I'd love for him to genuinely come to care for Service, a bond forged in survival against the odds. I think that could be really cool. If you (KudosWyvernspur) would like to add or change anything at all, feel free to say something and we can work it out :)
Ps: my spell list has a homebrew spell on it that I can't figure out how to remove right now. I'll get it fixed by the time we start
The storm blew and churned the waves of the shore here, and lightning threw golden cracks across the sky. Anyone foolhardy enough to be out in this weather might have seen the shape wash up in one of the bigger waves - a log maybe? Or a broken piece of ship? No, this was a humanoid shape, though not a human, nor anything that lived. Barnacle-encrusted metal plates could be mistaken for a suit of armour, until you saw through it to the wooden bones beneath, and the face was an unseeing metal mask.
From its torso projected a huge sword, almost as long as the figure which was itself tall, or would have been if standing instead of laying in the roiling surf.
>KRAKOW< Lighting splits the sky again, striking the beach and making a glass web in the wet sand. And again, closer now, as if finding its way towards the figure. And one final bolt which strikes the sword and... holds. The thing shivers and jolts as energy pours into it from the sky, and its blank eyes light up with an intense blue glow. The lightning finally fades, but electricity briefly continues to crackle around the figure's joints, flickering in and out. And then it sits up. It looks out to sea, and up at the storm which has begun to wane. Then down at the sword, which it slowly, gently, pulls out. It studies the sword briefly, turning it over in its hands, before standing up and walking away from the beach.
Hi i have a great wizard but don’t have the books on dnd beyond but they are a tortle back round of sage alignment of N name Sam Tenshell i did use a lot of books though they are Tasha’s couldren Xanathars guide PHB and monsters of the multiverse.
Put your spoiler here.they are an old but kind tortle and have spent many years studying magic after witnessing the death of their tribe/family they swore revenge and after a long journey and the study of necromancy they have finely found a purpose.
I did find some loopholes so they are quite powerful and are lvl1 there is no digital character sheet though and i have no experience in dnd.
I have read the rules and their ac is 17 with hp of 10
Service, like many people working in service, would probably be aware of many details that rich clientele let slip around them. Service is already based a bit on the Heirs of Ash trilogy, so Ashrem having another legacy would certainly be in keeping with Eberron Lore.
Service wouldn’t even realise which of the many secrets you would find important. You have a great character and I hope that you get through with or without Service.
To be honest Jetsam by @EMIW (wave) is probably a better Warforged than Service, although I would enjoy any potential interactions between Service and Jetsam. Service would try to get Jetsam to be a bit nicer and more outgoing to people, maybe take off some of the seaweed. Maybe Jetsam and Service could have met before and there is a common story to both of them being abandoned. Jetsam could try to stop Service mentioning any details of their former owners. However that may not be in keeping with the Eberron theme.
I haven’t put up a picture because I did hide another small easter egg in my backstory and I am waiting to see if anyone bothers to mention it. I am easily entertained :-)
Note that I don’t know anything about the dragons eye and cannot comment on how appropriate the backstory is, however happy to update and iterate if the DM likes the idea.
Hello Mightyowl, below is my submission and I hope it’s interesting/in line with expectations, as an Eberron pulp adventure sounds awesome!
Name: Storm Emberson
Race/Lineage: Air Genasi
Class: Genie Warlock (Djinni)
Background: (Guild Artisan)
Storm Emberson is the son of an Artisan who is herself scorned in polite society for her unmarried status and her non-human child. The son of an absentee adventurer, once met on an archeological dig that required many skilled craftspeople, Storm was raised on tales of daring-do by his missing father told to him by his mother.
Now an adult, with his father’s ring (who he presumed to be a Genasi like himself) a new magic is beginning to manifest itself, and the wind whispers a new direction to a life he had presumed would be urban and boring but which now seems like it might be quite exciting instead, as he seeks out the sort of opportunity that once brought his mother and father together in a more exciting world of war and mystery
@OutcastFromOtherSide more than happy to have a common backstory.
@EMIW, @nschrock
Obviously with all these great submissions I have no expectation of being picked. But if we are both lucky then it looks good to me. Being repaired does make sense and it would make Service feel indebted to Sascha. Without speaking for anyone else I think that if it worked out then I could see that backstory lining up nicely with Talis and/or Jetsam. Maybe they are the one who hired you, you would want more than one person on an expedition.

Gan-Re: Aarakocra Barbarian - The Wild Beyond the Witchlight | DM - Keys of Empire
Race/Lineage: Reborn (she has an affinity for warforged as "not the usual kind of alive". like her. But if "I seek my own closure. I want my life back" isn't a compatible option, she may not mesh with death clerics.)
Class: Barbarian (Path of the Storm Herald) (open to merge backstories with Jetsam)
Background: Outlander ("Awakened" as the Last War was ending, it fits her wandering around out of place)
(OOC- Victoria was created for an Eberron campaign that folded. Her concept is a failed attempt to create a flesh golem for the army of Karrnath. Storm Herald Barbarian fits the "wannabe flesh golem" concept. She's determined to find out who she was in life, if she hasn't already.)
Victoria "awakened" in Karrnath, less than a day's travel from Atur. Her first memory was waking up on a slab, in a lab, during a thunderstorm, with a wild haired man shouting "SHE'S ALIVE!"
After testing her, he seemed pleased that her strength was greater than you'd expect from a slender woman, but confused that an electric shock hurt her. Several times he heard him muttering (when he thought she couldn't hear) "It shouldn't do that. It shouldn't be that way" and once when he was pouring over his books, he whispered "That's where I went wrong. Flesh Golems are immutable. Trying to keep her attractive messed up the process".
She left Karrnath as she didn't feel a connection, but joined "The Blood of Vol" as an undead friendly religion. Years later, she's learned how to fight, but finds herself flying into a rage sometimes. And she's still searching for her past.
Would be happy to work together on a backstory with Erbert and any of the other characters. He’s traveling to Q’barra to map the area and document treasures, a Zil gnome. He may be in the process of being recruited by the Trust, he plans to go on adventures in the jungles and beyond the deserts into Q’barra and bring home a fascinating tale from his adventures, studying the weave and unknown magicks and relics from the area that would hold his interest. Can meet up in Q’barra and form a group to explore from there…

A wizard is never late, nor is he early, he arrives precisely when he means to.
Since he was the smallest of children, Joorin has always been fascinated with the nature of his people. Specifically the propensity for them to get out of the worst of scrapes by a lucky twist of fate and have the odds fall on their side of the line just slightly more often than most tall folk consider fair.
When given the opportunity to study any subject he wishes, he decided to dive whole heartedly into the topic. Now through study and experimentation he seeks to see just how far he can stretch the unfair advantage of the fairest of folk. He travels the world seeking old tomes and ancient artifacts that might explain or further enhance his ability to grasp the very weave of Fate itself, to become the first, the greatest, the true...Luck Mage.
Mechanics breakdown:
Between Halfling Lucky, the school of Divination's portent ability, and the Lucky feat...I figure I will just about always be able to fudge the dice to what I need when it counts.
At level 8 I will take Bountiful Luck to let my Halfling Lucky feat use my reaction to extend to other party members.
That is pretty much what I have planned so far. Be interesting to see where it goes from there.
Silthras presents as a bounty-hunter (actually a freelance spy for Phiarlain). He has searched for many months for the wreckage of a Cannith airship that went down in the Q’Barran Jungle. He's interested in something that was on board...(( still in development/negotiation )).
Service was not the only survivor of the crash: there was one other. Though that fact remains a secret (at least for now). Silthras – born into a family with a long mercenary tradition – found that his true calling working for House Phiarlan's spymasters. In his most recent (and final) assignment, he was contracted by his handlers and asked to investigate a specific airship and report and signs of an alleged Cannith super-weapon. He was told to bring monitoring devices on board in his luggage, and to keep a close eye on the Warforge named Service. About half way though the voyage he was convinced that there was no basis for the allegations, and that Service was exactly what he appeared to be: An able bard, servitor and aide to the senior crew. Curious about the luggage that he had been instructed to take with him, Silthras investigated...which is when he found the bomb. His clients apparently wanted the ship destroyed and did not mind if he also died in the process, and they usually got what they wanted. They had their reasons, of that he was certain. He wondered if the super-weapon story was entirely fiction, and who or what was the real target.
He did not want to cause a panic and ran to see the Captain, but got no further than the entrance to the crew quarters. He was arguing with Service when the bomb went off. Surrounded by bulkheads, they escaped the worst of the blast. Next thing he knew, days had passed. Silthras remembered moments of clarity in his delirium, he remembered Service tending to his wounds. And he remembered crying out about the bomb, and his role on the airship. When his head finally cleared, he considered killing the warforge, but instead he turned to him, “Better that I died on the ship. Do you understand?” he asked.
–
Now goes by the name Silthras Greyhame and claims to be a bounty hunter, but no-one recalls the last time he brought in a bounty of any kind, though he seems to have coin to buy expensive drinks when he wants them.
(( FWIW, I also have a fairly clear idea of his history back home, but don't expect it will become relevant.
Edit2: And if the tie in to Service's various other connected pc stories is to complex, it could be that they never met after the accident, with Silthras skulking off into the jungle to heal... and perhaps they met later in the city. Or they never met. ))
@Twombley how about. Service has been travelling with Erbert Jenkor Jerriheimerschmidt for two months and has been trying to learn how to pronounce his last name; they have yet to succeed. Unwilling to give up Service seeks the fabled Dragon's Eye which legend says can enable the bearer to speak any language, it is their last, best hope. :-) Or something more sensible as this is Eberron and all dark and broody. Good luck, Erbert looks great.

Gan-Re: Aarakocra Barbarian - The Wild Beyond the Witchlight | DM - Keys of Empire
Service could continue to try to pronounce Erbert’s last name, would love to seek the Dragon’s Eye with you! I was trying to make something from his name that fit the bill for Zil names.
Zil Names. Zil society is divided into major houses, each of which is composed of multiple families. Each gnome carries the name of a house and of a family in addition to a personal name. For example, Alina Lorridan Lyrris and Tallian Talius Lyrris are members of different families (Lorridan and Talius) within House Lyrris. Gnome names are long and lyrical; a Zil proverb claims “the sweetest song is the name of a friend.” Personal and clan names are usually at least three syllables long, and there is a strong tradition of alliteration.
Erbert comes from a long line of Jerriheimerschmidts, just like his father and his father’s father. You know, his name is my name too….

Grudnik is an heir of Kech Sharaat, one of the clans of the Dhakaani that are vying for leadership. As their version of a knight, he is focussed on his role to become a master of blade and strategy.
As the Dhakaani have been drawn back to the surface after retreating underground following the war with the Daelkyr, he felt there has become a need for information and intelligence, and there is only so much that can be gleaned by the Khesh’dar.
He is also a bit unique amongst his clan, in that he sees the merit in the Kech Volaar’s belief that knowledge is a great weapon, and the search for weapons and artifacts that were lost when the empire fell is a worthwhile endeavour.
With the emergence of Darguun it has become easier for hobgoblins such as himself to walk amongst the surface dwellers, and so he left with a few loyal to him in search of something that might tip the balance in favour of the Kech Sharaat, and perhaps lead him to become the Emperor himself one day.
He has travelled around Khorvaire in the guise of a mercenary seeing for himself the strength of the nations and results of the Last War, and how it might impact his people's ambitions. He has most recently arrived in Adderport.
Not all things were easy for Vrailin as one could think for her family name and her heritage. Born in the jungles of Xendrik, from a drow mother and a human explorer, her parents weren’t aware of her latent powers until she was three, when accidentally charred her food with a small lighting. It was then when both parents started to think that the weird mark that run down the back of their daughter was, indeed, a dragonmark.
They left their village and headed to Stormreach, seeking for an arcane master that could explain their daughter’s powers. Arcane masters experts weren’t cheap, though, and soon her father found himself working almost all the day between the docks and one of the slaughter houses of the city, while her mother was a maid in the house of one of the prominent merchants of the city. They were little more than slaves. Fortunately for Vrailin, one day, while working in the air-dock, his father was talking with a friend of the last occurrence of his daughter, that she was pushing tiny toys with little gusts of wind, that the captain of the air vessel, Mizza'il d'Lyrandar overheard him. Intrigued he started to interrogate Vrailin’s father and before sundown that same day, Vrailin was brought to the airship for Mizza'il to inspect her mark. Recognizing his own house mark, the young captain asked them to allow him to take the child with him back to Stormhome, were she could be properly trained as a Lyrandar Dragonmarked.
They were reluctant at first, but they both acknowledge that their options were limited. If that noble really wanted, could take her daughter away without asking, and he was offering a great sum of money, and to take care of her as if she was his own. After three long days, and knowing that they couldn’t gave her the live and the training she needed, they accepted. Mizza'il was true to his word, and raised her as if she was his own daughter. She was trained and as she grew up, so did her powers.
The rest of the children of the house didn’t really accept her. Her drow heritage and knowing that she was really adopted wasn’t in her favor, but she endured all the bullying and she worked harder than anyone. He is now part of the House's explorers, ready to prove herself and dreaming on having her own airship one day.

A wizard is never late, nor is he early, he arrives precisely when he means to.
No one wants to make a joint backstory with Beadle because he smells really bad.

I'm up for some Eberron antics... Will sift through some character options and post shortly.
Bring out your inner chatacter class...
Name: Otter
Race/Lineage: Wood elf
Class: Druid, Circle of the Moon
Background: Hermit
Character Sheet link: https://ddb.ac/characters/96657111/RwmZ8W
Backstory: In progress (would be great to have access to Eberron content if Otter has a chance of being selected)
Name: Grudnik of Kech Sharaat
Race/Lineage: Hobgoblin (Heir of Dhakaan)
Class: Fighter (Battle Master)
Background: Knight
Character Sheet link: https://ddb.ac/characters/96638897/OgoJNU
Backstory:
Name: Vrailin d'Lyrandar
Race/Lineage: Half-elf mark of the Storm
Class: Sorcerer - Storm origin ( Perhaps multiclass to Lore Bard, but not sure yet)
Background: House Agent - Lyrandar
Character Sheet Link: https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/4219883
