Millicent considered offering to pair Participle with the mule, whose name she had quite forgotten, but she knew the two animals would nip at each other the entire time and her being on foot would slow them even more.
As they travelled along she provided entertainment to pass the time; snatches of song, snow flurries, a profusion of shelf fungi, illusory butterflys, imitations of everyones voices emanating from the air and animal sounds. ( Druidcraft, Prestidigitation, Minor Illusion and Thaumaturgy).
“ Nah, you’re braver than me. I much rather face a beast than talk in front of others.”
Fay said encouragingly, however this was true. Hunting things, saving people has always been her line of business, but give her stage and tell her to talk for an hour and she’s hopeless, she can be quite oblivious in some settings.
“ Not sure if you’ve noticed but a rangers people skills are kinda rusty.”
" As were mine, though more recently I have had some tutelage and found people to be almost as interesting as some books."
She said in acknowledgement, she paused momentarily to address the elephant in the road
“ Do you have a teacher for your magic? “
Hopefully this would imply to Millicent, that Fay is interested in what type of magic user she was because she was entertaining the group while they travelled, she felt that she could now ask this, before she felt that she couldn’t and didn’t out of respect.
" The very best.", she smiled giddily, her hand slipping inside her satchel.
" A teacher? Oh....uh....not really.", she bit down hard on her bottom lip looking very distracted for a moment then her left hand leapt up and seized tight hold of the reins again.
" Um, no. Just some little trifles I picked up during my studies.", she caught her breath hastily, and did an exaggerated stretch.
Li-Anne rides along... when she hears the conversation between Millicent and Fay, she smiles "Life is the hardest teacher... It teaches us what we are made of and where are we going... What we did wrong and what consequence of those actions are..." she smiles for a moment "...but there is also the regret. I knew a wise man once who taught me to live as if the world was to end in an hour and to never regret any decisions... You know..." she shrugs "...better to do something than not to do and have the regret 'oh silly Li, why didn't you do this...' so... here I am." A beautiful smile appears on Li-Anne's face. She gets closer to the cart, gets one thing from her pouch and hands it to Millicent "Have this! It will look good on you!" If Millicent takes it, she can see it's a quite unique feather. On one side it's gloss black, but the inside is of the cleanest blue color of the sky. "Put it in your hair!"she says with her eyes sparkling...
Eila, who had been silent for quite some time, looks grave, and unlike Fay takes no pains to hide it. "I'd have to disagree. There are lessons in life that are simply not worth what it took to learn them. Having the freedom to live life however which way you choose..." She trails off, fiddling idly with the holy symbol chained around her neck, "I've learned it's better to do without that freedom. What is there to regret if you never had a decision to make in the first place?"
Jade turns to Eila and, for the span of a heartbeat, it seems that she intends to reach out to her.
Instead, she speaks.
"True freedom is not the freedom of choice, it is the freedom from choice. It is accepting what has been placed before you and knowing what needs to be done."
As the woman make there journey West now alongside the Way of the Lion they begin to hear something odd from just over the crest of one of the rocky hills the sea air a wisp on the wind to a lone stand of trees. The party then hears the distinct crackle of magic! From her vantage ahead of everyone Fay notices an overturned wagon of goods spilled out over the road and a died beast of burden, a cart horse maybe she can't be entirely sure! Then suddenly brilliant flashes of magical energy zip back and forth between the lone stand of trees and the overturned cart! The party then hears the distinct thuds of a wayward crossbow bolts hitting then splintering wood!
"You're companions died and you will be two if you won't negotiate with us," a hard and gruff male voice comes from the cart.
"Get down," Elliðaey calls out to Fay, Millicent, and Li-Anne who are mounted. "There's amush ahead sounds like someone's already triggered it," she says in a low tone!

"So, do you mean it's better to have the choice taken for you?" Li-Anne asks surprised. "So if someone tells you, that from this day you are a slave, you would accept?" ...
When the ambush is visible, Li-Anne jumps off Bane... "Who is the attacker?" She takes a look to see who is the attacker and who is the victim.

"I don't care, I'm still free. You can't take the sky from me..."
Li-Anne has no way to tell who is who, she only heard what a gruff male voiced shout. The party itself hasn't actually seen anyone at the cart or in the trees either. They've only seen magic crackle out from both areas as well as crossbow boats fire on the cart.

It's early evening now and the storm is still rumbling above the party. The sky is getting darker and the wind has picked blowing towards the coast ahead of the party.

Millicent had hit the dirt with a thud as soon as instructed, she gave Elliðaey a crooked grin. Her mentor would know she would not be following her, Millicent and combat were a bad combination....though she was improving...
"Well, I'm afraid, good sir, that you could do with a class on negotiation tactics, as the options you've left me, unfortunately, do not meet the minimum requirements for me to surrender anything to you!" The feminine voice, with a distinct drawl, echoes from behind the overturned cart. After another moment, it continues, saying, "As a matter of fact, according to my scholar training manual, it is you who should be surrendering, as it is deemed improper to yield in cases where the surrendering party may intentionally or inadvertently allow SOA--that is Scholars of Allsight--information to fall into unsavory hands!"
Those with eyes fixed upon the cart may perhaps see a very small and pale forehead under a mess of gray-black-silver hair, followed by a gangly arm. With a flash of large, round, green eyes, the young woman shouts continues to speak in an elevated voice, saying something about the rules and regulations fire bolt hurtles from her exposed palm. Just as quickly the head and arm disappear behind the cart again. After a short tick, the forehead slowly reappears around the side of the cart, followed by two wide, green eyes and blushing red cheeks. The fully-opened eyes scan for newcomers on the scene, as she's sure that her ears picked up something aside from shouting idiots and crossbow bolts slamming into the cart.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Li-Anne without a word wild shapes into a cat (domestic one) and will try to sneak up on the attackers by the trees from the opposite side to the cart.
At the very first indication of a civilian being in danger, Eila was already preparing. She'd tugged her holy symbol up free from her neck and wound the cords around her hand - a little trick she'd picked up to shave a critical split second from casting - and had her shield readied before her boots even hit the ground.
She sprints from the cart up the rocky hill separating them from the trees and cart toward where the commotion was sighted, but crests it just in time to see fire bolt thrown from the cart, and the instinctive flinch and resulting confusion over who is the assailant gives her enough pause for the others to catch up or act.
Li-Anne creeps up on the figures in the trees. It's three men but one is badly wounded lying bleeding on the ground being tended by the other. A large man shouting at the fire bolt thrower has heavy armor with a broken shield by his feet. These men look throughly beaten but the big man doesn't seem to think he'll lose.
