- Do we even have the means to destroy it safely? Why don't we just keep it safe and away from these two for the moment? And concentrate in the interrogation? We could even wait to examine it until we are back with Tesfaye. I'm sure he would know what to do, or even prepare a safer environment for us to deal with it with less risks.
Saoirse says this to her companions, but she's becoming less interested in the book, and more on the man in front of her. She stares at him for a moment. Why does she find him so familiar?
-I feel like I know that man. I want to start with him him - she shares a look with the rest. If no one is against it, she will proceed.
At Hemlock’s question, Lam pauses to think. He never had cause to ponder the nature of the book he guarded before. “Owner… was not evil.”He says this after some seemingly careful consideration over what evil means. “He was magic human, but did not kill or hurt. He said book was… very important. Said in wrong hands, it would be terrible.” After a pause, “One time he read it and was upset after.”
He looks down at the book, then back at Hemlock. “I… do not think book is evil. But it is powerful magic I do not understand. I do not trust it near magic woman.”
He watches Saoirse as she goes to question the defender and makes an attempt to follow the conversation.
Lam got 13 insight to follow along with the tone of the conversation.
With her companion's approval, Saoirse stands in front of Samantha's guardian, paying special attention to his features and wondering once again who this man might be and why he's so familiar. She must have seen her before somewhere.
- First of all, and in case you were wondering about it, your companion is safe and has not been harmed. We are going to ask you a few questions and expect your cooperation. If you collaborate, you'll both be returned to Captain Jonah when he and his people come back tomorrow. But if you choose to stay silent and not share anything, you'll both be handed to this kobold tribe and can expect nothing less than what you and your companion provided them a while back.
Saoirse pauses for a moment, trying to ascertain that the man has understood her words.
- Who are you? Why do you carry a Hemocraft collar with you? Are you a blood hunter? You look familiar, have we met before?
She gives the man time to answer before continuing:
- What were your intentions in the mine? What do you and Samantha want with the Crown of Divine Right? Did you expect to find it here?
The man shakes his head, and bends his neck and looks down towards his collar, indicating that it somehow prevents him from speaking to you. You can tell that he understands all the words you are saying. When you mention hemocraft and that you might recognize him, his eyes go wide for a moment, and he slowly looks you up and down. His eyebrows shoot up in recognition, before falling back into place. He seems to recognize you, as well.
When you ask about their intentions in the mine, he looks pointedly towards the book in Lam's hands, and then turns and gazes in the direction towards Samantha. During all of this, he has not said a word or made a sound. With your high insight check, you can tell that he is putting all of the pressure he can on pulling out the stake in the waĺl that his hands are bound to - not in a jerky way, just consistant pressure. So far, it doesn't seem like it's going to budge.
Saoirse is at a loss. The man does not seem to be lying, but even so, she doesn't like the idea of freeing his hands nor his collar so he can speak. It could be as well be a trap. What to do...? She asks another question:
- Were you forced into coming here to do all of this with her?
Whatever his answer is (by means of his gestures), Saoirse looks at her companions and transmits all she's thinking.
- What do we do? Learning more from him will require an act of faith that I'm not sure I'm ready to make. But I feel there's more to him that we should learn about. Should we try to free his hands and remove the collar? If we do it, we have to make sure he won't be able to attempt anything.
Do I have to do another insight check for the last question? Just in case I will: 12. Too low 😔
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Sha-gravis is paying close attention to the interrogation. He is positioned in such a way the he may provide Saoirse with divine guidance as she seeks to find information.
The man nods earnestly at the first question - he was forced. Sha-Gravis can also see a deep sadness, the look of one who has been suffering long, and given up.
When Saoirse turns away and mentions untying his hands, Sha picks up on a very slight shake of his head. He seems to think untying him is a bad idea, but he's not about to tell you that more clearly.
Hemlock just shakes his head, "There is no way I would trust him to be freed while conscious. I saw what he and his sorceress are capable of, and we would not stand a chance".
He turns to Hássan, "Do you have any means to put him to sleep or make him unconscious without hurting him?"
The defender gives a nod to Sha's first question, then two very noticeable shakes of the head, to Sha and Hemlock, respectively.
Hássan looks at the defender with tremendous pity. "I have no ability to put him to sleep without hurting him." He turns and addresses the defender directly. "I will ensure that you are freed from this magic. Barring this, I will do what I can to give you the freedom of death."
Saoirse is getting more anxious by the moment. With every question answered, the more she wants the defenser to be free from the prison that Samantha seems to have put him into. Though she understands Hássan only has good intentions, hearing the kobold offer the freedom of death makes her heart sink. There must be something they can do! So she asks more questions hoping to find anything that can help achieve this.
- Is removing the collar the way option to free you from the witch's control? Does she have to free you herself? Does she need her hands to do so? Does she need the ability to speak to do it?
If only they could get the woman to free him, she thinks.
- I ask this, because Sha, you know how to Command people? Perhaps if we could tell her to do it ..?
Hemlock waits for answers before asking some more questions of his own, "Is the book the source of her power? Can she still overpower us without sight or free hands?".
He also speaks to the others about the guard, "I think it has become clear that this man is an innocent victim of the Sorceress. I believe our judgement for him should be to try and break the mind control and allow him him to go free".
The defender does not know the answers to Saoirse's questions, belied by a face that does not look hopeful. He does look very interested when Saoirse mentions Sha-Gravis' ability to command.
Hassan's nostrils turn up in disgust for a moment when it is implied that Sha can use the command spell, but he does not comment out loud.
He indicated that the book is not the source of her power, looking a little exasperated at the question. He does not give any indication of an answer to whether she could overpower you, instead looking away, his face twisted in pain, as if from a powerful headache.
He shakes is head to Hemlock's question about whether it would be dangerous to read the book, but does not indicate an answer to whether it holds the information you seek.
Lam listens to all the defender’s answers and his friends’ renewed questions, only coming to the understanding that the man is being mind-controlled after his friends outright say it. He feels bad for the defender. If Hemlock looks like he wants the book, Lam is ready to hand it over.
If it looks like they are going to see the woman, he speaks up, more to his friends than to the defender: “Should we bring book near magic woman? Or should we keep it far away?” His face indicates worry about the sorceress’s capabilities.
Hemlock reaches out to Lam and takes the book. "Let's see what is in this then, before we go near the sorceress. And we should maybe move away from him too", he says motioning towards the sorceress' guard.
"Keep a close eye on me, in case I am taken over. And if it is not too much trouble Sha-Gravis, could you lend me your magical aid? I would do it myself, but I would not be able to see magic if I did that".
He then looks at the book, opening the cover.

“A wise plan”, Hemlock answers regarding the book.
He motions for Saoirse to go ahead and question the guard.
He will pay close attention to his behaviour and answers, watching for deceit or an attempt to escape or fight.

Saoirse sighs when she realizes the reactions to her mention of the Command spell. "Damn it, Saoirse, think before speaking!", she tells herself...
She does agree to Hemlock's suggestion that they should let the man be free and awaits the responses to his latest questions.
