As you pull out the items, you hear an angry roar emanating from the earthen walls to your side. Two Ghasts emerge from the earth, screaming an angry scream that sounds like "miiiiine", and charging at you to attack. One Ghast is slightly bigger and looks male, the other is a little smaller and appears to be female. Both appear emaciated and weak, perhaps not having eaten for years. They are dressed in tattered clothing, that may have once been used by well-dressed normal people. In fact, you can just about make out the motif of a Windmill on the clothing of the bigger one - the same windmill design you saw on the Cost of Arms in the entrance of the house.
(Roll Initiative.
And yes, I know what you're thinking: two ghasts are a very lethal encounter for 2 lvl2 characters, given that the rest of the party dropped out. But narrative-wise, they both have to be there, so these two Ghasts are starved and weakened.)
The Ghasts lurch forward towards you. Even before they reach you, the first thing that hits you is a horrible stench if decay and death. (Roll DC10 constitution save against being Poisoned. You can re-try each turn and are immune after the first save).
Once they reach you, in their madness and driven hunger, they try to bite you
Janek manages to withstand the horrid stench from the ghasts, and avoid the one trying to bite him. Drawing both his longswords, he quickly strikes back. (Longsword Attack: 7, Damage: 5) (Longsword Attack: 13, Damage: 10)
As the ghasts reach him, Alcazar smiles faintly. The smell, though displeasing, comes also with a familiarity that he does not find totally offensive. There is a strange comfort in it. Their attack, however, he does find offensive.
Once again, multiple missiles composed of pure force launch themselves at the ghast that was struck by Janek, or if none were struck, then the one nearest Janek. He doubted that the warrior would do anything other than strike out at the nearest threat.
Drawing on his newly awakened powers, he then summons energy from the core of his being to restorethe energy he just expended.

(Hits, of course)
The Ghasts are both hit. Beneath the tattered clothes and remnants of earth, it's hard to see much, but it doesn't looks like their one is seriously injured. Both ghasts are driven by their rage and, having failed to bite, now try to slash you both with their claws instead.
This time the ghoul connects with its attack against Janek. It's not severe, but the injuries are slowly building up. He again attacks the creature that attacked him with his swords. (Longsword Attack: 12, Damage: 8) (Longsword Attack: 9, Damage: 7)
Wanting to finish this, Janek draws on his reserves to press the attack. (Action Surge feature to get an additional attack.) (Longsword Attack: 19, Damage: 10)
(Sorry for delay, had a family situation over the last few days. All sorted now.)
One Ghast is seriously injured and looks like it's about to collapse. The other is still in the fight and seems to be even more enraged by the smell of blood. They both turn their anger on Janek (as he caused a lot of damage), and try to slash at him:
One Ghast misses, but the other hits, bringing Janek to the brink of passing out. "I don't know about you Alcazar, but I think it's time we get out of here!" He holds his longswords at the ready, more focused on fending off the creatures than attacking. (DISENGAGE Action) He then moves back out of the room towards the east, then north to follow the hallway back to the room with the statues.
(OOC - I know he's not going to get that far in one turn, but that's the direction he's headed.)
Seeing Janek sorely wounded and fleeing, Alcazar opts to stay in the fray to finish off the wounded ghast at least. They would not last long with two pursuers.
Once more bolts of force leap from his hands, one at the wounded one, two at the other.
The wounded Ghast stumbles and falls, bleeding heavily. The scent of blood is in the air and pervades the entire room now.
The other Ghast looks like it will charge at you once more, but it sniffs at the air and you see a crazed hungry look in its eyes. It looks from you to its fallen mate, and to your surprise throws itself on the body of its fallen mate - tearing at its flesh with teeth and claws in some sort of deranged feeding frenzy. While it begins to consume the other Ghast, it is so deeply engaged in its feed that it temporarily pays you very little attention. (One Ghast is down, the second is heavily distracted. You can roll next round's attacks with advantage)
Seeing the brief reprieve from the Ghast's attack on its fallen companion, Janek hesitates. His swords sheathed, he grabs his crossbow, coming back some if necessary, to get a shot at the remaining Ghast.
(Crossbow Attack: 22, Damage: 13 w/crit)
(OOC - I rolled the attacks separately on the character sheet. With the first Damage roll between. I rolled Damage again for the crit and got 2 dice but I just took the 1st result to add to the other. Hope that makes sense!)
Eyes widening, Alcazar pauses mid retreat as the warrior commits to the battle. Flame once more leaps from his hands, flying toward the ghast. He then glances at Janek, ready to follow him should he choose to flee.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
The Ghast, in the midst of its feeding frenzy, fails to dodge your attacks and is grievously wounded. The crossbow bolt is sticking deep in its chest and blood pumping from the wound with each beat of its rotten heart. It's right arm is severely burned and wounded- now hanging down somewhat limp. It looks like the Ghast is about to collapse, but with its last bit of strength it throws itself once more at the nearby Alcazar to bite him in revenge for burning its arm.

As you look at the dead and lifeless corpses of the two Ghasts, you look once again at their clothing and accessories. The small one is still wearing a few golden rings (which you could steal and probably sell for a few gp). The Windmill motif of the Coat of Arms leads you to think of the family portraits upstairs. Now that they are lying still and you have time to breathe and look at them properly, you are almost certain that these wretched creatures is what became of Gustav and Elisabeth Durst - the master and mistress of the house, and parents to the dead children whose remains and unsettled spirits are still in the attic)
