Sae chokes and gasps as the cloud fills the room, but instinctively manages to wrap a fold of her cloak around nose and mouth. She looks briefly to see if the orb shattered in releasing the vapors, or if it is intact and might do further mischief. Then she turns her focus to pulling those of her comrades who were closest to it out of the cloud.

What you're dealing with is a cloudkill (most likely it was in a glyph of warding that was triggered by the defeat of the stone defender).
It will hang in the air for 10 minutes... that is to say, 100 rounds, doing more poison damage each round. The area is also heavily obscured in a 20-foot radius sphere. It will move 10 ft away from its origin every round, though you can't say for sure what direction it will move in.
It can also be dispersed early with a gust of wind or similar spell. The main thing you know right now though is that you should probably not be in this cloud a second longer than you absolutely have to be. Also... almost all undead are immune to poison, so if a bunch of zombies were to come wandering into the area of the spell it would do absolutely nothing to them while you all continue to choke on the toxic gas.

The poisonous cloud came forth so soon after he spoke that it almost looked like Emrys spell. It obfuscated his vision and grasped his throat. For a moment the halfling could not discern the toxic smell and it was increasingly hard to breath. He expected the sphere to launch some kind of attack, but not that fast. Should have gained more distance, he thought retreating as fast as his short legs could allow. Coffing, he found his companions had the same idea. Our shared brain cell worked properly this time.
Danger was yet to end. The spell effect moved, albeit slowly, creating a completely obscured field that no one there could stand in. No one but the undead. It was like the Darkness spell, but even better in battle. Seeing Wade look for an exit gave him an idea and for the first time Goldenleaf was genuinely grateful they had thought the dragon corpses.
“Let’s make our way back to the sea.” His head hurt, his body felt heavy. “It’s the one way we know there will be no enemies.” Besides, the water should keep them safe from the gas, provided the spell didn’t disappear before they reached the entrance. “After the walk back, I would love a breather.”
Emrys didn’t wait for his companions’ answers to start walking. He had to make up for his shorter steps.
Notes: As always, treat Emrys words as suggestions. He will stop and listen if anyone proposes something different.
Pulling the silk scarf from about her neck, Sae will double it up and soak it in sea water before using it to shield her mouth and nose from the gas. She will help as many of her comrades as possible to get out of the area until the unavoidable gas has done a quarter of her hit points in damage. Then she will herself flee the cloud and consider whether it is time to drink her potion of healing

“I don’t mean we should leave, big guy.” He answered still walking. It was only when Arleo spoke that Emrys noticed how his own words could be perceived. “Just to wait in the water for the gas to dissipate.”
At least the halfling assumed it would dissipate. Granted, he was no specialist in the arcane and magic to him was more of a tool for combat than anything else. But he heard histories through his years as a merchant. None of them about an eternal spell and likely because one could only know that something is eternal after the passing of all eternity. He heard of permanent spells, but none of them were offensive so it seemed safe to assume the toxic cloud would disappear. Gods damn you, Hailstorm. You could have told us about this cursed orb. The thought made Goldenbleaf imagine what else the pirate didn’t mention to them. It would be better to leave the touching of anything to Wade’s spectral hand. Maira’s identifying magic would be essential too. As long as it is something we can deal with… One could only hope although, if it was something beyond their abilities, well, they would be too dead to care. A thought better left unsaid, he was fast to decide.
Alright, I'm just going to go ahead and assume that Maira follows everyone else out of the toxic cloud.
You make a run for it and find yourselves back by the murky water. What do you do next? You could probably take a short rest, or even a long rest if you opt to have Maira cast a tiny hut to keep you safe from the undead.

Maira would check up on everyone in her quiet way, offering healing spells and words of encouragement and praise to those who need them. Since she hasn't really gotten a chance to talk to Wade before, she would make a special effort to look him in the eyes and tell him with a smile, "that was a wonderful idea you had! It makes perfect sense that the cloud would dissipate when it hit the water! I don't know why I didn't think of that, but I surely am grateful that you did!" She would attempt to look everyone in the eyes as she continues, admitting "I...almost can't put into words what a relief it is to not...well, to not be alone anymore, down here, in the dark. I feel much stronger now, with you all here. I...I want to be of some use to you in return. If you will let me. Please, won't you tell me how I can? Actually, I could start by calling up a place for us to safely rest for a bit, if everyone wants?"
Assuming everyone assents, she will cast Leomund's Tiny Hut and plop onto the floor with an exhausted sigh, listening quietly to the conversation for a while.

" Well, we smashed it. Find anything worthwhile?"
Anyone who wants some hints on how to deal with this, feel free to make an Arcana check.

Wade looks for an exit as he does not have any magic to control the wind

Areleo likes the idea of a long rest.
Sayyida sits down, " We should take a rest until the gas dissipates....or longer if anyone needs it. I'm happy to sit watch."
Sounds good
