"Press the attack!" The paladin rushed to the next shadow and again lashed out.
MOVE: To the closest shadow. ACTION: Attack twice. * Longsword Slash - Attack: 16, Damage: 12 magical slashing (add 8 on crit) * Longsword Slash - Attack: 15, Damage: 11 magical slashing (add 3 on crit) REACTION: Will use Protection to defend his nearest ally; the next attack against them is at disadvantage
As the sigils of his ward fade and the flames on the bookshelf gutter and are replaced by wisps of smoke in response to his gestures, Essendrum draws lightning to his fingertips and glowers at the shadow before him. He tries to step forward but finds himself unsteady on his feet, a combination of his own age and the shadow’s evil power.
”Your master is a fool to summon such as you to play at being guardians! Back to the shadows with you!”
Enoch strikes at the shadow, hitting it twice. It cries out in a hollow, unnatural voice as the knight slashes through its shadowy body.
Spike smacks the shadow attacking him. It dissipates with a satisfying thud of his magical mug.
Kiza fires an arrow at the remaining Shadow. The arrow passes through the creature but it cries out in the same unnatural voice as it folds in on itself becoming ash and dust.

Essendrum immediately returns to examining the bookshelves and the desk in the previous room, as well as all other places a wizard might hide a spellbook.
Essendrum also proposes to the party that they take a short rest here. He would like to read a bit of what he has found, in particular the book he noticed earlier ‘corpses and their care’ as he suspects the Red Wizard substituted a zombie for himself earlier and infected the party with some foul disease. If the party agrees, after he completes his investigation of all the places a spellbook might hide and made an initial review of the books on the shelves, using a ritual Detect Magic to complete his examinations, he’ll settle in to one of the comfier chairs and read from the most promising few books he has found. After the rest he’ll use Arcane Recovery to regain a third level spell slot. He’ll pocket a promising book or two and be ready to proceed after that.
Kiza raised her feathered hand "Enoch I could use some healing. Those shadows hurt and drained my strength" she then hobbles over and slumps into one of the chairs. Holding her wounds closed with her other hand "I also found a false wall behind the bookshelf along the north wall that can be opened as it is only closed by a latch and spring." she points to the indicated area.
The paladin laid a hand on Kiza's shoulder as he bowed his head in reverence. A golden glow shone out from under his palm, fading away within a minute as he withdrew his hand. He grimaced. "Those shadows were quite vicious. I know you're not fully healed yet, but that's the best I can do for now." He looked around the room. "Taking a break might also help with those last few bruises."
Essendrum looks up crossly. “Please save your strength, Sir Enoch. Scrapes and cuts we can recover from. But we may need your good standing with the Gods to cure us of my fears of corpse rot are warranted.”
Kiza begins feeling better as her wounds close and the bleeding stops. She still feels some aches and bruises, but she is on the mend "Thank you Enoch"
She stands after taking a few deep breaths and head to the false wall "Can someone move the bookshelf as I lack the strength at the moment."
As Spike comes over to move the bookshelf Essendrum is searching through, the man turns and straightens up, one hand on an shelf and a book in the other. He smiles down at the dwarf.
”Wouldn’t you rather have a mug of ale first? In an hour, when I have finished my work and read quietly a bit about the matters important to our necromancer, the secret passage to fresh horrors will still be waiting. Maybe we’ll even be fortunate and the fresh horrors will come to us.”
”Eh, works for me,” says Spike, pulling up a seat and speaking the command word to fill his magic tankard with stout Dwarven ale. He starts relaxing a bit and sipping his brew while he waits.

As you rest Bjorn says: "I will pray to Oghma for healing for you." Bjorn finds a spot, places a blanket on the ground, and begins praying. Occasionally you look his way only to see him struggling in his prayer and Essendrum is sure he saw the elf sweating. Finally, after 15 minutes, a wave of healing energy washes over the party. Healing: 15 (everyone injured receives the above h.p. in healing)
Bjorn comes to Essendrum. "I have never felt this before," he tells the mage. "But it was a struggle to find Oghma's Grace. I do not think I have done anything to offend the keeper of the book so I think it is this place."
The old man grunts. “Very well. If our spiritual advisor cannot find peace, I don’t suppose we should rest. The bookshelf, if you please.” Essendrum flips through his book on corpses while Spike moves the bookshelf.

Catching his breath, Enoch looked around at his companions. "Does anyone need healing?" he asked.
"That's also probably a good idea."
