Essendrum sets to work thoroughly investigating this room and the one before with a desk. He looks in particular for anything that might contain magical formulae, such as a spellbook or scroll.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Kiza moves over to the bookshelves and investigates them for a possible clue or hidden mechanism. "Hmm... I see no traps and Spike would have surely set them off by now. I will check the bookshelves." Her hands already want to crack open a book and start reading, but she keeps herself in check.
While the others watch, Essendrum and Kiza go about the room, inspecting almost every inch of it.
Kiza:
With a practiced eye, you catch the minute details of a false wall behind the shelf in the middle of the north wall. You find the latch and spring that will open it. You believe this is a secret doorway.
Essendrum:
As you inspect the room and books more closely, you find several books with titles such as: -The study of corpses and their care -Uses for pixies -Gems, a field guide -Usual and Unusual plants DM: (roll a d20 for me please)
Essendrum feels it first. A shift in the temperature of the room. He breaths out and the moisture of his breath seems to freeze in mid-air. The rest of the party notices the sudden temperature shift. It drops so suddenly that it stings your flesh and frost starts appearing upon your armor and clothing. Candles along the wall do not shine as brightly as they had and a couple of them go out. Essendrum's torch dims. Spike and Enoch catch movement in the far corner of the room. Something in the shadows. Kizacatches the movement as well but coming from a different corner. Shadows appear to be dancing among the darkest spots in the room. Enochcan feel their eyes upon him. Bjorn grasps his holy symbol.
From the darkest part of the shadowy corners of the room, 4 much darker Shadow seem to ooze out and make their way towards the party. Essendrum may act!
Essendrum moves to the far corner of the room so that his torch will shed as much light as possible on the shadows. If he can illuminate the shadows with bright light (20 ft radius) and still stay five feet from the closest, he’ll cast Firebolt on whichever shadow is closest to Spike. If he needs to move adjacent to illuminate all or most of the shadows, then he’ll use Shocking Grasp. He’ll place himself so as to block an attack on Spike if possible.
Essendrum retreats to a far corner of the room. He utters his incantation and launches a bolt of fire at one of the shadows. It hits a shadow creature and the creature lets out a wail that sounds more like a deep hollow whisper. A dark laughter erupts from the 3 different locations in the room. The one Essendrum hit turns his featureless head towards the old mage and hisses "Wizzzaaarrrddd" Immediately it launches itself into the shadows along the floor, Attack: 7 Damage, if hits: 9
A shadowy-clawed hand flashes out from behind Essendrum, missing the mage.
A second dark figure leaps from the shadows of the chairs in the room to strike at Enoch. Attack:13 Damage, if hits: 9
A third leaps from the left far corner and attacks Spike. Attack: 12 Damage, if hits: 12
The 4th leaps from the shadow of the table and attacks Kiza. Attack: 16 Damage, if hits: 9
A dark clawed hand lashes out at Kiza, striking her causing feathers and blood to fly from her arm. She feels as if her very strength flees her. -Kiza loses3 points of strength everyone else may act.
Enoch's armor seemed to deflect the strange shadowy attack, and without missing a beat, the paladin swung his sword down towards his attacker, then followed up with a thrust into the shadow.
ACTION: Attack twice with longsword * Longsword Slash - Attack: 21, Damage: 11 magical slashing (add 7 on crit) * Longsword Slash - Attack: 8, Damage: 8 magical slashing (add 6 on crit) BONUS: Will use Channel Divinity to Harness Divine Power, regaining an expended Level 2 spell slot REACTION: Will attempt to use Protection to force disadvantage on an attack against any nearby allies
Facing the shadow that attacked him, Spike pulls out his magic tankard and starts trying to boink the undead with it rather vigorously. Unsure of how much help raging will be against these wispy creatures, he holds off for now…

“Bjorn, you seem to be hypnotized by the library here. May I suggest you use your Sacred Flame cantrip? As you know, the alignment of the outer planes polarizes the energy their intervention produces on the prime material. These creatures are almost pure negative energy, making positive energy, or ‘radiant’ as most religions characterize it, an excellent choice here.”
(If you’re running Bjorn as an NPC I’d save his larger abilities for now and use the radiant cantrip.)
Bjorn presents the Holy Symbol of Oghma, a silver scroll on a chain, and says: "Let the Light of Oghma shine over us." A light blue-green light rests upon Enoch, Spike, and himself as the faint sound of a lute being strummed is heard. Again Bjorn speaks "Oghma defend me" and a glowing blue-green club appears.
Enoch: Enoch lashes out with his sword. His first cut bites through the shadow's "body" and the second cut misses. Enoch touches his holy symbol and glows faintly.
Spike: Spike pulls out his favorite tankard and swings it at the shadow, hitting twice. The creature does not seem to waver at his attacks.
