Enoch stepped through the portal, and spent a few seconds adjusting to the changed environment. Finally spotting the fire, his eyes grew wide. There had been no mention of this--which means it was unexpected. Possibly an actual attack.
"We've got to help them!" he yelled as he rushed towards the town.
Essendrum's familiar takes air and flies towards the burning village. "Milady" makes it to the town far faster than the party and gives Essendrum the following scene.
This village has been decimated with many buildings burnt too far to be saved. Here and there the owl sees people running but usually with an orc on their heels giving chase. What catches the owl's attention is how many Ogres are running around the burning landscape. By Milady's count, there are 6 Ogres and 15 Orcs. But walking away from the site is something very big. 3 Hill Giants.
All of you fall in line and move as fast as possible but, it takes close to 30 minutes for you to get to the town's outskirts. Smoke rolls over you as you climb down and across a 6 ft. wide, muddy, ditch, that appears to run entirely around the town, 10 ft. from the town's protective wall. You edge forward slowly to get a better look at the scene. The wooden walls of this town have been broken down in several spots. There is one such spot before you and through the smoke that covers the landscape you see buildings burning inside. A figure walks across the opening, blocking out the fire behind it. This figure, an Ogre, stands 8 ft. tall, and thick built with a large potbelly. In its right hand, it holds a large club and in the left, it is dragging what appears to be a woman by her hair. Her body shudders back and forth as the Ogre pulls her along. DM: Do you act or wait and watch?
Essendrum raises his staff and a bolt of fire flashes forward into the ogre. “Unhand her!” he says firmly in Giant. More quietly he says to the others in common, “Milady spies a half dozen like this one in the vicinity, more than a dozen orcs, and three hill giants who were leaving before we arrived. I apologize for acting rashly, but I’m still angry from our meeting with the catmage. If that woman is alive she may thank me, but Spike may have extra giants to kill because of my foolishness.”
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Enoch squinted at the ogre, his eyes adjusting to the bright flame after running through the dark... and then he saw her.
Barely containing himself, he yelled, "Put her down, cretin!" as he dashed through the hole in the wall; he'd only barely heard Essendrum as he'd eyed the scene, and although his words finally registered once the paladin was halfway to his target, the young man simply gritted his teeth and raced forwards even faster.
Essendrum looks up from searching through his pouch for bat guano to see the young men hurling themselves at the ogre. “I suppose I needn’t have apologized. The world would be a simpler place if it consisted only of paladins and Dwarves.”
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Kiana stands next to Essendrum and just stares as Enoch and Spike give meaning to the word brazen. "I concur. Looks like subtlety isn't this groups specialization. Which is a shame, because you learn early in this line of work how powerful words can be." Kiana seems like she's about to continue speaking, but stops herself. It's clear that she's putting a lot of thought into what she says next.
Initiative: 16

Essendrum stands and launches a bolt of fire at the Ogre. It hits the creature squarely on the arm and shoulders, the same arm dragging the woman. The old leather armor ignites and in the Ogre's attempt to put the flames out, he releases the woman. (DM: Assuming Kiza is launching her arrow prior to combat commences) Kiza lets out a fierce "Caw" and launches an arrow at the Ogre. It is true to its mark and sinks deep into the Ogre's thigh.
As the party approaches to engage the beastman, they see another approaching from the east, just inside the wall. He has a scimitar in hand and is advancing on the Ogre. (DM: Need an Initiative roll forMatar)

“Much as I would like to have discussed the joys of devouring sentient beings, that ogre will not be sharing his thoughts with us,” Essendrum says to Kiana. He turns toward Matar and smiles, “We’ve only just arrived hoping to help and apologize for our lateness. There is more work to do and your scimitar would be welcome.”
