Knight Background, I follow Torm, God of Courage and Self Sacrfice
I served as a knight in the royal army, working my way up through the ranks I gained the commendation of my superiors and even the God Torm granted me his divine blessing. On my last mission my troupe was ambushed and all but me were slaughtered. I would have died if Orlan hadn't found me when he did. I owe him my life and will return the favor some day.
Name: Ember Race: Rock Gnome Class: Artificer/Armorer Background: TBD Backstory:
Ember’s relationship with Orlan is simple, he fixes whatever the great detective needs free of charge of course. Why would so a gifted artificer work with a retired detective for free, well that is because with our Orlan, Ember would have lost a lot more then an arm in the fire that changed his life.
Ember was always gifted with smarts, sometime too much for his own good, and he always had a dream of creating amazing things out of magic and metal. One day that dream came true, but at a cost. Ember was working on his masterpiece when the reactor that powered it exploded, causing the metal to magically graft onto him. If Orlan wasn’t down the road, Ember would be no more, simple as that.
OOC notes: Dunno what a spiral campaign is, but it sounds fun! :) Thank you for running!
The basic idea is that instead of building out this huge setting and coming up with detail in advance (which I'm not talented enough for), you just build up the character's starting location and areas of immediate interest to them. Then as they go to other places, you fill those out too. So you're only having to come up with stuff as the players need it, instead of just having all this unused material laying around that they may or may not stumble upon.
TIL that there's an actual name for my world building style!
I've almost got a character done, just need to roll stats and figure out equipment.

By the way, how should we handle equipment? Starting equipment, starting gold, selling/buying?

Character Name |Kiana Goodpiety Race | Variant Human Class | Sorcerer (Divine Soul) Background | Charlatan Backstory |
In her conning days, a favorite trick of Kiana was to travel from city to city as a cleric and provide healing services to militaries; the right type of incense comes in contact with the right type of makeup, and you can make even the most grievous "injuries" dissolve in half a minute. But one day, her partner in crime got held up, and she was sure she was done for when a man with a real gash along his torso was wheeled in for me to fix. She doesn't know what smiled on her that day (we can workshop it, or leave it ambiguous, but maybe a god of chance of some sort), but when she futilely layed her hands, his flesh knit itself up even faster than her fake wounds melted--she's never known how, but ever since she's had real magic to match her vestments and symbols.
Soon enough, Kiana started to use the powers for "good", mostly when there was coin involved. Constantly moving from city to city to remain unknown, she would infiltrate cults of dark gods as an evil cleric, selling the information she found to the local guards. However, during one of those infiltrations, an investigator by the name of Orlan beat her to the punch and managed to arrest the entire cult while she was still operating within it. In the ensuing interrogations, Orlan actually believed her claim of being a false prophet; something about her just didn't strike him as godly. He's the only person in the world who knows who she truly is, at least to her knowledge. Ever since then, she's owed the investigator a favor for believing her pleas and letting her go.

Character Name | Techlas Odslier Race | Half-Elf Class | Bard or Cleric (PM'd) Background | Folk Hero Backstory | (specifically, why do you owe Orlan a favor or debt?) Techlas grew up on stories of his father Arilys and his exploits. Arilys left when Tehclas was but a young boy on adventures and is now a legendary name who has conquered many foes and saved countless lives. As a child, Techlas was often visited by the god of storms (love to help build the god and who they are) who his father served. He views the god as a friend but they doesn't necessarily view him the same. Once he grew into a teen, Techlas sought to prove himself in his small town and earned a name for aiding others and assisting the town guard, One day he received a letter from an old friend of Arilys, Orlan. The letter offered Techlas the chance to prove himself in an adventure. Techlas immediately packed his bags and headed north to meet with Orlan, promising his mother that he would find his father and become a legendary hero in his own right.
Goal I Techlas wants to find his father and earn a name for himself. Growing up on stories of his father and the monsters he had fought, Techlas wants to fight the same foes and bring the world some light. He doesn't know if his father is still alive as the last story about him he heard was years ago. He still wants to be legendary and follow in his father's footsteps.
Backstory: As a young forest gnome, Jelssa Celphine Nyfi Xaphina Ellywick Vandala Nackel - known commonly as Jelly - always knew she was different. Whereas other forest gnomes used their natural knack for illusion and inherent quickness and stealth to avoid contact with the outside world, Jelly turned those skills towards engaging with the outside world. While her friends would run or fade into the underbrush at the sound of approaching horses, Jelly would sneak close to the road and use her powers of illusion to good-heartedly prank passersby. Her curiosity, impulsivity, and inclination for good-natured trickery prompted her to take up adventuring as a means to squeeze every ounce of enjoyment out of life. Accompanied by her loyal badger Constance, she jumped on a merchant's wagon that was passing through her clan's land and never looked back.
Her adventures introduced her to the mysteries of magic. Her insatiable desire for knowledge yielded a small collection of spells, but she did not know how to use them until she met Erevan Goldpetal, an elderly high elf wizard. Jelly stumbled upon him in the ruins of an old castle's attic. He was bleeding and unconscious, suffering from a recent attack. His spellbook lay at his feet. The allure of knowledge was great, but she couldn't bring herself to leave someone to die. She patched his wounds and patiently attended to him until he returned to consciousness. Too hurt to be moved and too weak to conjure spells, Erevan remained in the ruined attic. Jelly continued to help him, refusing to leave his side despite repeated rebuffs. Erevan repaid her by teaching her the foundations of magic. Unfortunately, his wounds were too grave: he passed away a mere fortnight after awaking. His last request was that Jelly find his estranged daughter, Alavielle, and offer her his apologies and give her a family heirloom.
Jelly searched for months to no avail; it was clear that Alavielle did not want to be found. Desperate, Jelly enlisted the services of Orlan to find Alavielle. She did not have enough money to pay for his services, so they made a deal: Jelly would owe Orlan a favor to be filled at a time of his choosing. Three years later, that time has come.

Just do regular starting equipment for now. Once I've gathered the party, we'll figure an appropriate gold amount to have for starting at that level.
