"Spanners and wrenches", Normont curses as he holsters his pistol. "Look what those things did to Theron. Do you think if he hadn't slipped on my grease..", he starts to ask, but the question tails off. He knew the answer.
"Right, no time for self pity", he says to himself, taking a deep breath and rubbing his eyes that had started to glisten. "Jasper, we found Conroy Pekese murdered in an alley on the way to The Red Trout. Not like this though, nothing supernatural. What should we do?", he says looking mainly to Jasper as the ranking watch member.
Jasper breathes hard, the adrenaline beginning to settle now that the fight is done. They can’t bring themselves to look at Theron. “Is… Is everyone else alright?”
At the sound of people emerging from their apartments, Jasper sheathes their sword and produces their badge. “Militia business! Stay in your homes! This is an active crime scene!”
They then turn to Normont. “Pekese is dead? Damn, we need to secure that crime scene too. Let’s rally the militia. We need to secure the crime scenes, get people away from the bodies. Conduct an investigation. Does anyone have any idea where these zombies came from?”
Magnus looks over at the mangled body of his friend but then pulls himself together and looks to the roof, "Jasper I think they came from up there but I can't see anything"
"Pekese is dead for sure, Jasper. And he is right in the middle of all that is going down this evening. We should check out his apartment whilst we can. We have the key", Normont replies to Jasper, holding up the key. "Unless you have searched there already?", he asks, realising where the other group members had been during the scuffle with the corpses.
As Magnus mentions the roof, he nods in agreement, that was what he saw too.
"Well, no use staying down here then. Let's go check it out."Nerak glances at the corpses again and holds back a gag. He never liked the sight of blood and gore that he'd seen so much of today. He turned to a wall taking a moment to find some good footings and started climbing his way to the top.
"We haven't searched the apartment yet - let's do that now. Good work getting the key, Fizzlepeak," Jasper replies to Normont with a nod. "Let us know if you find anything up there, Nerak!"
Dev’s music crescendos until the moment the undead creature approaching him falls. When it collapses, the teenager looks past it, locking eyes with Normont over the smoking barrel of his pistol. Dev sees how the others had reached out to stop its approach – defending him. This is a fact almost too huge to process.
The beat drops away suddenly, leaving only a swirling music which dwindles, incorporeal, to nothing, echoing the deadly creatures as they fade to dust and blow away. It takes a moment for it to sink in. Defending him.
“Thanks…,” he says, his eyes ticking between Lokilia and Normont, a look of astonishment on his face, waiting for the other shoe to fall as it were.
The energy leaves his step, and the line between his pointed eyebrows smooths out until his face is once again passive and glum.
‘My shoes have taken control before but never… in front of people. What’s happening??,’ but from these confused thoughts, and trying to more or less hide in the shadows, he looks about.
“Where’s Theron?,” he asks, before the knowledge of what he saw but hasn’t yet processed drives all the red color from his face, leaving it pale, pink, wan. He looks to Jasper for confirmation, and then just stands over the place where Theron fell, unable to remove his gaze from it, from the utter end of a person with whom he, Dev, had been standing in a room together earlier this very evening.
Jasper looks back at Dev and shakes his head. They then put a hand on the lad's shoulder. "I'm sorry you had to see that, Dev. If it's any consolation... he's in the Raven Queen's embrace now," Jasper says meekly. They never were very good at comforting folks.
Lokilia had just looked at Theron's corpse as the undead crumbled to ash around them. She had seen the dead, sure, mostly animals, but a fair number of people. It was part of life, whether aged or simply victim of poor fortune. This was different - wrong - unnatural.
Trying to stay stoic about it, but still disturbed a bit, she turns to Dev. His thanks was just what she needed - a distraction from the mutilated body and a connection back to the living. "It was nothing," she tells him. "We were all helping each other."
She paused a moment at his comments, thankful to have Jasper be the one to clarify Theron's demise to him. She walks closer to him, speaking in a listed voice. "Dev, are you saying all that..." She isn't quite sure how to describe what he'd been doing. She waves her hand, kind of indicating where he'd been dancing and the music. "It came from your shoes?"
Lokilia is clearly confused. But intrigued. "We should probably help," she tells Dev, then turns to Jasper who seems to be taking charge. "What do you want me to do Jasper?"
Waiting for a response, she glances around for any sign of any clues left behind. (Perception: 10)
As the others spoke and began to construct a cordon and discuss searching the apartment, Nerak began to climb....the driving rain and smooth wet stone made it difficult but he managed to get most of the way up....though a number of apartment residents regarded him suspiciously from windows and doorways.
" Whys that scaly bloke climbing our home."
" Look....is that a body! Murderers?"
" They said they was Watch.......but I mean, thats what a group of killers would say ain't it?"
" I dunno the Watch here, I mean we is all travellers and temporary residents here...they could be anyone!"
After a few minutes Nerak made it to the roof and pulled himself up, large ceramic fluted tiled covered the shallow angled roof, it was very wet and slippery and the rain mad eit hard to make out much......
When Lokilia asks Dev about his shoes, the teen looks at first glad to have been asked, like there is a story to tell. But the inertia of present circumstances seems to rob him of energy. His eyes flash with excitement but just as quickly turn downwards, his long lashes a soft shield interposing themselves between him and anyone else.
“I mean, I don’t know I guess,…” he trails off vaguely. His eyes try again to meet Lokilia’s, but he can’t bring himself to say any more on the subject, and just shrugs, helplessly.
He trails after her and Jasper, pulling his hood up again, trying to create with it a barrier between himself and the woes of the world more distinct and impenetrable than his lashes can provide.
Quinn will look to Dev and offer a hug if he wants one. Death is a tricky thing for earth genasi because they believe that the body is joining home in which all of them come from. It is great honor to die in the soil. But he knows that this horrific scene is not for the faint of heart. “Dev, you were brave out there and you should know that it is okay to grieve.”
Normont gives Dev a nod of appreciation for the thanks, glances once more at what's left of the body of Theron, and then turns his back on it and makes his way to apartment 11.
"Ok, let's see what this fellow has been up to that has caused this mess", he says as he walks over, not wanting to discuss the situation with Theron right now. Time to grieve will be later, once whatever has caused this has been made to pay.
He stands before the door and focusses himself, before reaching out towards the handle with one hand and is about to place the key in the keyhole with the other. He hesitates for a moment, wondering whether someone with enemies would take extra precautions.
He decides it's better to be safe than sorry, and examines the handle and lock for any traps before continuing.
"Lokilia, please help Normont investigate the apartment, or get up to the roof and help Nerak. Dev, you go with her, okay?" Jasper murmurs to Dev, giving him a pat on the back. "Quinn and I will stay with the body, make sure anyone that gets too suspicious knows that the militia is involved and on the case."
Once they go and Jasper is alone with Quinn, they'll speak up a little meekly. "I gotta say, I'm jealous, Ashari. You handle yourself well in a fight... and you seem to be a dab hand at comforting others, too. If I could have gotten to him quicker... maybe Theron would still be alive."
Nerak disregards the comments and quickly looses thought of his new companion Theron as he climbs, curiosity once again getting the better of him. He squints as he looks through the rain trying to find a source for the undead. "Where could they have come from...."He takes a moment to survey the scene, keeping his weight low as to help prevent taking a tumble back to the courtyard.
