As Mina Lee is rushing towards the others, she bumps into another student. The young woman is of slight build, light colored skin and stands at 5'9". She has dark brown hair done up in tight braids, though a few wisps of hair fall down to her shoulders. Her eyes are a matching dark brown color as well. Her first-year uniform appears to be in pristine condition, everything pressed and clean. The collar even seems a bit higher and more stiffly starched than the usual. The rest of the outfit though seems to show no alteration from the standard at all.
It was not much of a collision really, and Mina hardly seems to have noticed it as she continues to laugh. The other girl however seems to get a scowl of annoyance across her face. But the look lasts only a moment as she then addresses Mina with a smile. "What is the meaning of this?" she asks in a measured, but a bit demanding tone.
The start of term has been hectic and a serious shock to Aard'len's system. The relative simplicity back at home of a small school house with a comparative handful of attendees did nothing to prepare him for the absolute carnage of Strixhaven. Classes were busy and raucous at first, the exuberant students meeting gossiping about the latest developments in the social anarchy. The teachers had soon quashed that though, the sheer amount of information they were trying to cram into the students made Aard'len feel like his head was going to 'pop'. There were topics being covered that he couldn't even have imagined existed, let alone had people dedicated to studying... 'Fractal anomalies and the correlation of their origin to the variable strengths of the colours of mana they produce' had been a fascinating lecture once their guest speaker had gotten past saying the name several times in her introduction, but Aard'len couldn't imagine how someone his age had thought to spend 12 years studying only that. Boggling!
Though classes had become somewhat more routine, the changeovers and getting between classrooms was getting more and more incredible by the week. Some parts of the campus were just far enough apart that there was only just enough time to get from one classroom to the next, and I've time students were constantly trying to outdo each other with spells and magics that would get them there faster. Some learned spells to let them run faster, others literally flew, and every so often you could see someone try their spell for the first time, and lose the contents of their satchel as they mistook wind resistance or collide with others as they overestimated their banking capabilities.
Aard'len himself had fallen into a reasonably stable but draining routine. He had come to realise that compared to a lot of people here, he was far not all that clever, which had put him in a foul mood for a couple of weeks as others grasped things he struggled with, and he had improved his capacity to bluff his way through some difficult conversations. Determined to not show himself up though, he would allocate time each evening to study, with his dorm mates when they were about but they were each off at different clubs on different days. Mostly he used the time during the day to try and keep up with his workload, or in the case of computational magic, read ahead so he was ready for the next lesson.
With the help of Rubina and Aurora, whom he spent as much time as possible with, he had been working on his vocal capabilities and now spoke with a slightly smoother timbre and could easily hold full conversations without the scratchiness of his throat demanding refreshment. He still spoke with teachers and his dorm mates via thought, and it had proven useful on multiple occasions, catching attention across the courtyard, holding conversations during sile t study sessions, and even a few tests before the teachers had warded the classrooms to prevent such shenanigans.
For now though, Aard'len was enjoying one of the few occasions when their little group got to spend time together. Only three of their orientation group still remained, after Kiebel and Fianna both departed under hasty circumstances, though Zemeiya had seemingly settling into one void. He was just about to deliver a punchline to the story he had been recounting when he saw Mina charging over laughing and paying little attention to her surroundings, and another student starting to turn into her path. He aborted his story to try and warn Mina, his thoughts reacting faster than his tongue, "Watch out!..." Too late though, Mina collided with the other student of whom he had vague memories of seeing around campus, though didn't know by name. He got up and went over to check on them both.
In his time with the Horticulture club; Katar is interested, but hasn't enjoyed it as much as he thought. He's not sure why he's disappointed maybe he expect something more...magical. Meanwhile, Katar enjoys his time with the Strixhaven Star more and more with each new story. Because of this extracurricular, Katar has become pretty familiar with the layout of the school and the various campus'.
Outside of these extracurriculars, Katar has had trouble keeping up with the other students. Katar has never really been to a proper school before, certainly not a magical school. He's been learning new things, but there is a clear gap between Katar and many of his classmates. Arcanobotany has been one of his favorite classes and things come more easily to him there. He also enjoys beginning inkomancy, if only because it is taught by a bear which fascinates Katar.
He is trying to finish up an assignment, while hanging out with his roommates when he is knocked over by Mina running into him at a sprint. He pulls himself up, a little dazed. "What is it?" His words are a little slurred as he speaks, but he seems to be quickly getting back to his senses.
Idelisa has been around you all but was in a different area of the dormitory before an unfortunate accident rendered the space unusable for a while and she has just been relocated to the empty room in your area. She's been attending Beginning Computational Magic, Beginning Inkomancy and Introduction to Archaeomancy along with everyone else in Magical Physiologies, so some of you might have seen her some in these classes, but until now your circles just haven't overlapped too much.
At the Distinguished Society of Fine Artists, Idelisa has been introduced to Nora Ann Wu, a human who...does her best, and is an exceptionally kind and understanding person.
Rarely without a smile on her face, Nora is a kind person who is generous with her time and attention. This has led her to gain employment within the university’s dormitories, where she acts as a resident assistant. Nora offers confidential support to any student and is especially passionate about counseling other transgender students. She thoughtfully handles concerns ranging from students’ homesickness to matters that require her to act as an advocate for another student. Nora is a passionate member of the Distinguished Society of Fine Artists. As such, she spends hours on the potter’s wheel throwing clay. Despite her enthusiasm, her technical skill is lacking. Her tutors, in attempts to be encouraging, often describe Nora’s work as rustic or naive. Undeterred, Nora continues to produce terrible mug after terrible mug, which she gives as gifts to her friends.
During meetings of the Student-Mages of Faith she's met Melwythorne, a rather tall dryad who enjoys helping Idelisa get the most from her divine touched nature.
Towering over most students, Melwythorne strikes an imposing figure, especially given the branches that grow from his head like antlers. Calm in demeanor, he’s often confused by the people rushing around him, as their haste won’t lengthen their brief lifespans. Melwythorne had never been away from his grove before coming to Strixhaven and has found the transition to university life difficult. However, since he joined the Intramural Silkball Club, this close-knit surrogate family has helped him deal with his homesickness. He is also a member of the Student-Mages of Faith. He enjoys helping his fellow students celebrate their high holidays and discussing theology and spirituality. For him, the natural world and all living beings form a vast consciousness across all planes of existence, transcending the power and reach of any one deity.
“You’ve all got to see this!” Mina chortles. “We found these weird frogs and snuck them into the Fireside Lounge at Firejolt Café, and now we’re going to race the little hoppers! Quick! Come see before the professors find out! This is going to be GREAT for the paper later too! Hurry!" She then pries herself back and dashes back into the café, where you all can catch a quick glimpse of several fellow students you know by know, also inside.
"Frog racing..." The sound of disappointment is clear but Aard'len shrugs his shoulders. "Well, it should be good for a laugh at least. Hey, you coming along? Idelisa was it?" He extends his hand in greeting, sending this thoughts back to Darby and a mental message to Zemeiya, "C'mon, maybe sprocket can carry a frog to a win... Let's see what the rules are."
Idelisa, as many probably are, was initially drawn in by Nora Ann Wu's smiling kindness and exuberance. And she does admire her advocacy efforts. Unfortunately, she is not much of a person to mince words. Her honest critiques of Nora's artistic endeavors has made her a bit disliked by the others in the Society of Fine Artists. Particularly those that try to encourage Nora. And maybe Nora herself, though her kind demeanor never would make that evident.
Beyond that though, she dedicated a great deal of her time to working on her own projects in glass. She accepts input on her work as well as offering ideas to others in the Society. At least those on speaking terms with her.
In Melwythorne, Idelisa has found a great companion for sharing ideas. His support of her making the most of her divine touched nature has meant a great deal to her. She has taken an interest in his ideas, but bristles a bit at some of his positions. And she has heartily argued for her own ideas related to the Silver Flame. But the two can endlessly debate theology without taking offense and growing from the exchange. Over time they've come to find many areas of common ground.
Sometimes, school almost seemed to come second to the amount of time devoted to her artistic pursuits. But the reality is, Idelisa is very studious. She tends to find quiet spots, by herself, to focus on her studies. Inkomancy has surprised her as her favorite subject. And Archaeomancy can be interesting. Computational Magic was a bit rough but she's managing. And Magical Physiologies she hates, perhaps only grudgingly noting that it might be useful information.
Mina's mention of weird frogs causes Idelisa to slightly wrinkle her nose in distaste. She didn't plan on making a face, but she couldn't help it as she was thinking, 'Why would anyone bring frogs in the Café? And race them?'
"That is no reason to come barreling... hmph..." Idelisa stops her words short as Mina just runs off. She turns to walk after her when Aard'len speaks to her. It causes her to pause.
"Were you speaking to me?" she asks him, not having really heard what he said. "I was just going to let that woman know how rude she has been. Charging into people because of some frogs!" From her tone, it is very clear she does not think much of the frogs. She is however heading towards the Café just like many others are.
"Aye, I was..." Aard'len replies, before rolling his telepathy, a proper name for his mental communication talent was something else he had learned whilst here, over to the agreived girl. "Don't take things to heart, there are worse things than an accidental bump. Besides, if her intention was to get people to come see these frogs, regardless of perception, it seems to have worked." He gestures to the fact they are both walking in that direction. Taking a quick read from her disgruntled attitude, he adds, "I'll bet the staff are having a fit, so it won't be long before the faculty are there. Saves you searching for them to complain to..." He gives her what attempts to be a conspiratorial wink, overdone enough to be more on the comical side, something he has seen Rubina do to perfection at the play actors meets. Then he heads after Mina, giving the girl the option to follow of her own accord, or walk away.
Darby's term so far has had very few low points. Their studies have always consumed most of their time under the mountain anyway but now above ground they seem to flourish even more! One might think avoiding the noise and rough housing of their seven older brothers were the difference but Darby seems to think it's the school and endless possibilities! Darby seems to have many friends but very few other than her party they interact with as closely as the intense care they give their creations and their party when needed. Although Darby is very social when invited out the young dwarf doesn't seem to seek social events themselves. They do however seek to study with various classmates for different perspectives and to riddle out problems.
Darby and Rampart have even come to an understanding but still challenge each other regularly. Many students seem to move to Darby's way of thinking however that although war in the past might have been necessary. Now they are charged with the creation of technologies that should ultimately aid peace and foster creativity. Studies are going exceedingly well and Darby is top or nearest the top of each of their classes. All their clubs to they are an active member!
On the afternoon in question Darby is following their party towards the café with Aard'le, Katar, and Zemeia they miss the collision as they are digging through their trusty knapsack for Sprocket which has transformed from a plated ball to a seemless metal orb almost entirely solid looking!
"If the rules allow..." Darby replies out loud looking up to the new student who they've seen in classes but yet to interact with reacting to their party mates. "Oh, hello, " the red haired dwarf says to the sorcerer they recall seeing in classes. "Idelisa," Darby declares more than poses as a question gesturing to the sorcerer then their party mates. "This is Aard'len, Katar, and....well where'd Zemeia go..." they trail off shaking their head as they toss Sprocket into the air and the orb turns into a hyper realistic yet metallic owl! "I can't keep track of you all...worse than Phineas...he's my twin brother..." they trail off again guiding Sprocket to find Zemeia.

Sometimes a Nat 1 tells a better story than a Nat 20 ever could.
"Weird frogs. Racing. In Firejolt. What are we doing here talking? We've got to go!" Katar looks towards Firejolt, gives a quick nod to Idelisa, and sprints towards the frog race. Anyone paying attention notices Katar's eyes seeming to literally glow from his excitement. Katar can't help thinking about what this will look like on the paper.
Idelisa doesn't seem too surprised by Aard'len's shift from vocal to mental conversation. She tilts her head slightly as she listens to him, then replies out loud. "I will at least see what's happening. Hopefully you are correct that faculty intervene in a timely manner." As she continues to walk, she turns to Darby with a slight smile as the dwarf addresses her. "Hello..." There is a brief pause as she tries to recollect a name to go with the red-haired dwarf. "Darby." Fortunately, the two share all the same classes, so she has seen them around quite a bit. "Your owl is quite the work of art. Exquisite."
Acknowledging Katar, she nods back after Darby had introduced him.
The air buzzes with excitement—and the smell of coffee—as you make your way toward the back of Firejolt Café and duck into the lounge to witness the scene.
Hidden from the view of the barista station, the lounge’s central table has been pushed toward the wall and its chairs haphazardly tossed out of the way. In the middle of the room hop four unusual frogs. Each is glowing in vibrant colors—red, blue, violet, and orange—and has been outfitted with a tiny costume. One wears a makeshift cape, another has suspenders, a third wears a stylish bow tie, and the fourth has a top hat perched jauntily on its head.
Someone has used chalk to mark lanes on the floor, and multiple students are trying to corral the frogs into a starting position. As you all get closer, a student notices the characters and shouts, “You’re just in time! Want to race these frogs with us?”
OOC:
You can participate in the race if you want by doing one of three things: Race a frog (as its coach), cheer for another coach, or heckle another coach. In addition, some of your new student friends are here (the ones you met during your extracurriculars) if you wish to interact with them during the event to get a relationship point. Up to you though!
Idelisa enters the Firejolt Café and heads towards the lounge. Having lost track of Mina, she pauses near the outer edges of the crowd. She can just make out the unusual frogs. Though she's trying to watch impassively, her head subtly shakes back and forth in a disapproving manner. And that's before she saw the costumes!
Looking about the crowd, she easily spots Melwythorne, towering above the others. She makes her way cautiously over to him, trying not to jostle anyone. As she nears, she calls out. "Melwythorne! Good to see you! Can you see what they are doing to those poor frogs? Have you ever seen any like that?"
Aard'len sees the frogs being coralled and immediately takes a liking to the orange frog in it's top hat. "A dapper little fella that one." He announces to no-one in particular. At the suggestion of getting involved he looks to the other's trying to get a take on their enthusiasm. He spies Rubina and sends his thoughts to her, avoiding the tumult of the assembly and awkwardness of shouting, or at least trying to shout, over them. "Not quite the size of stage you're used to, but these little hoppers have managed to draw a crowd!"
He waits for the other coaches to line up and gets ready to heckle another coach in the hope of helping the orange frog to victory.
Melwynthorne slowly sways his lumbering form to look at Idelisa as she came into the bustling area. "A pleasure to see you too, Idelisa." He offers a smile and then turns to look back at the gathered students and the assortment of decorated frogs getting ready in their various lanes. "I do see them. I don't recall seeing these around the school in particular though." His voice low but warm and on the slower side, but he seemed to shift around the area with surprising agility giving the sense that his spiritual center wasn't the only part of him easily displaced. "I have, however, seen quite a few...activities, like this since I've been here. Last year someone enchanted fallen twigs out in the Commons and held a contest of sorts to see who could gather the most sticks. I was appalled at first, until I saw how much fun the students were having and how much more bonded they seemed to be afterwards, returning to their classes and duties with a refreshed look and attitude." He began to smile some, "The frogs here do not appear to be in any distress, so while I wouldn't have started this myself, if it has a similar effect as other games, then I will watch and hope to be able to embrace my fellow students with renewed appreciation and enthusiasm. I do hope you will stay and watch with me."
Rubina looks around for a moment before finally spotting Aard'len and giving him a warm smile. "Even the best know when they are playing a small part, Aard'len. The entire world is a stage, if you think about it. Sometimes we are at the fore, but many times we are just small parts in a greater whole." She gestured him closer, "And right now, these curious things are taking their place, we might as well enjoy the moment for what it is! Which one do you like?" She waits and looks at Aard'len expectantly.
"Hmm." Idelisa had not been expecting such acceptance from the dryad. 'He does know far more about the frogs though than I do. Heh, which is nothing! They're not in distress and the other students would grow in camaraderie.'
She turns to look up Melwynthorne. "As always a wonderful insight. Unity amongst people - it is an important ideal." Giving him a slight smile, she adds, "I'd be happy to stay and watch with you. Hopefully those frogs will enjoy the contest as well."
Rubina looks around for a moment before finally spotting Aard'len and giving him a warm smile. "Even the best know when they are playing a small part, Aard'len. She gestured him closer, "And right now, these curious things are taking their place, we might as well enjoy the moment for what it is! Which one do you like?" She waits and looks at Aard'len expectantly.
"That little orange fella has my vote. Lacking any clear anatomical advantage I can spy, all frogs appear equal, so either colour or outfit seem to be the differentiating factors. Orange wins, but the hat looks sharp too. what about you, which one has impressed you?"
"Thank you! I'll show you my new prototype if you're interested, " Darby replies to Idelisa with a bright smile.
Following everyone in but sticking close to Aard'len the dwarf muses over the comically adored frogs.
"The orange one," Darby asks Aard'len with furrowed eyebrows. "I think I'd rather coach him, " they beam moving towards the crowd and orange frog. "Hello," they say to the creature as Sprocket lands on Darby's shoulder hooting curiously! "Let's see how I can help you win," the dwarf grins.
Darby then gives Aard'len a thumbs up awaiting instructions on the race.
(We'll add that Culuril's character can be at this event as well and meet you all when she's ready)

Firejolt Cafe:
