The tall dryad creaks out a nod, "I don't believe so, plenty of scared souls though but I think they will all recover soon. A very strange incident indeed though. Something must have made them act and change like that. But since there appears to be no further leads now, nor help needed, I will retire for the night. Keep lighting the path, Idelisa." The remarkably agile creature bows slightly and begins to lumber off.
"I think we should look at the black goop at both places! It's obviously the only thing that really connects the two incidents, " Darby exclaims. "What do you all think," they ask.

Sometimes a Nat 1 tells a better story than a Nat 20 ever could.
Idelisa bids farewell to the dryad. "You as well Melwythorne." She then heads over to the others. "You found some of this black substance before? It would make sense to compare the two Darby. If you have samples of both" She pauses, "Not quite sure what sort of analysis makes sense though. Could someone check it out for magic properties?"
You can take some samples of the strange substance to a few people you know, but it doesn't appear to be magical, or at least, not anymore. But neither is it something commonly found. A perplexing find to everyone so far.
(Your relationship card should be marked by now. If you'd like a side RP for you and an NPC, DM me)
The rest of the term continues on with its various activities, carrying you all along with its relentless tide. While the incidents of this year get brought back up from time to time, eventually there is one topic that rears its ugly head, one that no magic can stop: Exams.
(feel free to rp your reactions to the frogs still, and anything else in the meantime, but we'll move on to the exam phase shortly!)
"I'm not sure I'll be of much more help here really. Though I am still curious how this all came about. Maybe let me know? I'm still trying to get my housing figured out, so I probably should go and take care of that. See you all in class," Idelisa says. She makes sure she has all her things and heads out of the cafe.
It's with a bit of surprise that a few hours later, Idelisa is moving into a vacant room with the others. "Kind of strange to see you all so soon! Hope I'm not making too much noise getting settled in." She is fairly quiet, and it doesn't take her long to have her room neatly arranged and tastefully decorated. Over the next many days, others can see that she has a variety of relatively small blown glass sculptures in her room. There's a split between those obviously representative of actual items - an animal, a waterfall, a snarl. But then others seem more abstract, an array of color and shape that doesn't readily adhere to some concrete shape or structure.
She stays a bit aloof from the others, though is always kind and polite to them. And even will join them on occasion for a meal. But mostly she studies on her own. And she devotes a great deal of her time to the Society of Fine Artists. Glassblowing is clearly her passion, and she is trying to look for ways to incorporate magic into her craft. Everyone has surely heard her complain about not getting to take History of Magic and Art this year. "It is truly a travesty that my actual interests are not properly served by this University. I mean really, I think I've learned far more from my extra-curricular activities than from actual classes!"
Her complaints though do not prevent her from doing well in class. She is always up-to-date with her studies and diligent about studying.
(OOC - She would spend time regularly with Melwythorne discussion theological matters. Not sure there is any reason to RP out anything more. I had marked a relationship point with him for the frog encounter. I presume that's what was meant by our card being marked. Something we do. She'd completely avoid Nora Ann with the Fine Artists. It really would annoy her how others coddle her lack of artistic ability!)
The dreaded day approaches, exam time! Everyone has been studying hard (maybe) in magical physiologies and it is time to put it all together to pass the class! You've read about and been lectured on all manner of Aberrations, Monstrosities and Oozes, and how to avoid them when possible, but should you find yourselves embattled with them, how to emerge victorious against them. Your instructor, Verelda Lang (a dryad normally with Witherbloom) has informed you that this year's exam with focus especially on Slaadi.
With the test looming ahead, each of you has time to get one last study session in. The question is though, how do you study? How does each of you prepare, knowing magical means to recall information will not be tolerated on exam day, but there are plenty of other more mundane options. When you have decided how you are going to study, make a Skill Check that you feel is appropriate for your study methods. For example, you might make a History check to pore over your books, or maybe a Performance check to practice gestures and mnemonics to help you recall information. A successful check will allow you 1 reroll during the upcoming exam.
In addition, you can attempt to pull an all-nighter, which will allow you 2 rerolls if you are successful in studying, to use on the exam. However! You will suffer 1 point of exhaustion at the start of exam day and which cannot be removed until after exams are over.
You can also buddy up with another student (PC) and gain advantage on your study roll.
Lastly, you are welcome to skip studying altogether but you will not be able to reroll anything during the exam. You will not know what the rolls will be until exam day.
Verelda has graciously offered some highlights on the Slaadi to help you narrow the field of information that might be on the test:
Slaadi are Aberrations known for their regenerative abilities and magic resistance.
All slaadi are dangerous and unpredictable, but red slaadi and blue slaadi are the least powerful and don’t cast spells.
Red slaadi can use a gland under one of their claws to implant an egg into a Humanoid. The egg eventually becomes a tadpole that bursts from the host’s body and transforms into a full-grown blue slaad, or a green slaad if the host could cast spells of 3rd level or higher.
Green, gray, and death slaadi can shape-shift into Small or Medium Humanoids.
A green slaad usually wields a staff and can hurl both fireballs and magical flames at its foes.
Death slaadi are rumored to have a stench so bad it can be deadly. In reality, they can cast the cloudkill spell.
Inexperienced scholars and adventurers sometimes assume that “slaad” is a misspelling or mispronunciation. Calling these creatures “salads” is frowned upon.
Given the dead end of the goo, Zemeia lets the incident with the frogs meander back in her mind as other responsibilities take precedent. Idelisa moving in is a welcome change, and Zemeia certainly tries to incorporate her new comrade into things in an effort to get to know her. However, she is strangely silent about all things related to faith and theology. While her demeanor is seen as cold or even judgmental, in truth she is conflicted. Her father made it illegal to worship gods, and made it a point to persecute them as a challenge to the claim of divine guardianship. But she knows her powers and abilities don't necessarily come from her, so ... where do they come from?
As the exam approaches, Zemeia takes to planning for it like one would plan for a military campaign. She creates a schedule of what topics to study on which days in the lead-up, and makes a point of engaging almost every classmate who will tolerate her directness in a quick debate/discussion on the topic. As she trains in arms, she mutters each side of a hypothetical dialogue by experts on slaadi. ((Persuasion for the study roll: 18 + 5 = 23))
Idelisa is certainly willing to get to know Zemeia, though she comes off as a bit distant as well. She tries to talk about her faith in the Silver Flame. She's very upfront about the fact that her power comes from this divine source. And she does seem a bit curious about how quiet Zemia is on the subject, but she learns not to push too far.
Seeing, Zemeia's meticulous planning, Idelisa asks, "Do you think we could study together? I'd be happy to take up one of the dialogues in your little debates." For her, she relishes the idea of taking on a role and playing it out in their hypothetical dialogue.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Katar has been playing catch up with his classmates during his time at Strixhaven, so he puts as much time as possible into studying and learning the material. Despite being at a disadvantage he has become friendly with many of his class mates, not just his roommates. Desperate to catch up, he has devised a...unique way of studying. The busy and populated academy is strange to Katar, so he has taken to the wilderness. He has been studying in the wilderness outside of the school's borders, using his natural surroundings to focus on the material. He leaves to study in the woods during whatever free time he has, his knowledge of the wilderness has allowed him to create a unique and effective study enviroment. He participates in Zemeia's debates when he can, but he focuses on his new study technique more and more. Survival: 13
The discovery of the strange sap-like goo on the frogs brings a concerning aspect to the whole affair. Aard'len talks his thought process through with the others, stepping through various possibilities and likelihoods; how the trunk and frogs are unlikely to have both come across the goo in a natural habitat - with the trunk being inanimate, which leads to the possibility that the trunks owner happened past somewhere that the goo existed. Though for there to be so long between instances that the school know about suggests that if it was something natural it is not near to the school... If it isn't near the school naturally, and after some discussion with Katar as to the lack of migratory nature in frogs, they conclude that the frogs wouldn't have travelled from afar.
Then there were the issues of contact and timings; the frogs had been dressed by students and handled by them, so if the goo was brought in then there is a chance that it could have transferred to a student but there is no way of knowing how long the goo remains on a creature or an object before taking effect. Aard'len takes time to check with Darby about when the dwarf handled their champion before the race, and whether she can remember anything odd before the transformation, and whether the good is actually a by-product of the transformation itself. Eventually, Aard'len has to put aside his thoughts on the odd incidents, realising that the rabbit hole of questions only goes deeper, and he has none of the answers to eliminate theories at this stage.
Aard'len warmly welcomes Idelisa to their dorm, her room being next to his he feels a little responsible for making her feel welcomed - possibly a little too much so. The loss of several room mates so far in the year has left a niggling doubt in Aard'len mind, and though outwardly he is far more confident that he was at the start of the year, his inner thoughts don't align to the façade he holds up. As much as he wants to spend his time studying by himself, Aard'len does take the opportunity to study with his room mates and some of the other students with whom he feels they can offer each other assistance. He spends more time with Rubina and Aurora during their study periods, using his time with them to improve his vocal talents, but also watching how they act and their naturally extroverted mannerisms, which he spends time in secret trying to teach himself.
When Idelisa offers to pair up for some study sessions, he takes her up on the offer, sharing his insights to Computational Magic, against her obvious natural affinity for the History of Art and Magic. When Verelda practically hands them the contents they need to be revising for the exam their study patterns shift, Aard'len throws himself into digesting the information about the slaadi - whilst trying to forget the mental image of how awful it would be to digest a slaadi itself.
He sends time alone in the library, digging through tomes and texts, investigating and researching to try and find any information that he can use.

Deciding to mostly rely on each other's support in preparing for your first major exams, aside from Katar who immerses themselves in the outdoors to study, you all feel pretty confident going into the exam. (Everyone has 1 reroll to use during the exam. Not 1 per question/part, 1 total. :) )
The campus has a palatable feel of nervous energy again as exam day dawns, bringing a sharp cold wind in the early morning driving students on to even seemingly colder classrooms where the exams are held. Strict anti-cheating measures abound (which doesn't seem to deter some students from trying) as professors begin to administer their tests. You all join your classmates in a rather dreary looking room, not the usual room you had your classes in, but a little used one, more austere and intimidating perhaps, with high oak walls, deep green drapes and desks set rather far apart and each lit by a single light attached to the desk. Everburning torches are affixed to the wall, but with the drapes closed for testing the room seems almost intimidating perhaps. You hear a few classmates lamenting as they come in over how they'll never remember the difference between red and green and some snickering over calling them "salads" still. But the time has come, the test paper is laid at your desk, the exam begins...
The first half of the exam is multiple choice, covering all aspects of the Slaadi, from their arcane categorization to particular abilities.
(Everyone please make an Arcana check for this section)
The second half of the exam asks students to write a few short essays regarding defusing Slaadi encounters, particularly how to keep them calm during unexpected encounters.
(Everyone please make an Insight check for this section)
--- Remember you may reroll once for either section if you wish.
While I know no one is that unscrupulous, if you would like to attempt to cheat you can forgo the above rolls, and instead make a Sleight of Hand and a Deception check, NO rerolls.
Idelisa gladly accepts Aard'len's offer to study with him. (And hopefully Zemeia as well!) She focuses a lot on the idea from Zemeia of posing as a slaadi expert in reviewing what they learned. (Performance w/Adv: 25)
At the exam, Idelisa tries to portray a relaxed and confident attitude. She does feel confident, though the setting does seem a bit unnerving. At the start, she focuses in on the questions, trying to breeze through them. (Arcana:12).
The question and answer section left Idelisa a bit worried. It was a bit tougher than she expected. And now she had to write essays! Not her favorite part. Taking a deep breath though, she headed into that section, trying to take her time. (Insight: 18 + 4 Student Die, Mages of Faith = 22)
Having written her essays, Idelisa feels pretty good about the results. Maybe all those discussions about faith with Melwythorne had helped! With a bit of time left, she went back to check over the first section again. (Arcana re-roll: 17)
Going back through, Idelisa did realize a few mistakes she'd made. Correcting those, she was still reviewing as the professor indicated time. Quickly she turned in her paper and left the room.
She realized she was a small bit terrified. Had she done well enough to pass? The essays were good at least - she hoped. She found herself just walking slowly and distractedly across campus, not really paying attention to where she was going.
Zemeia is pleasantly surprised by Idelisa's and Aard'len's willingness to study according to her careful plans and preparations. Zemeia is used to is used to being the one a bit too intense for other people.
Zemeia approached the exam day with an almost fatalistic stoicism. In truth, she merely could not get out of her mind the severity of her father's tests, and was inwardly grateful at the lack of violence and humiliation involved in an exam.
((Arcana 21; Nat 20 + 1)) Zemeia glances at the questions and can't help but grin. These could hardly be called exam questions. They were comprehension questions, and none seemed to even delve into the inherent paradox of the consistent physical form of a species born of pure chaos.
((Insight 4 then 18; Nat 1 + 3, reroll for 15 + 3)) Zemeia's confidence is short-lived as she is suddenly completely confounded by the essay prompts. She puts aside her work and closes her eyes for a moment, breathing deeply and subtly shifting as she moves through combat forms with her mace and shield. The memories connect to ideas in her studies and she lets the newly recalled information flow from her with a renewed sense of direction. As she finishes the essay, she can't help but be proud of the combat choreography she just created as a guide to her essay structure.
Zemeia exits the exam feeling confident and sees Idelisa exit just ahead of her. She jogs a little to catch up and says, "How did it go? I felt the first section was a bit easier than I expected, but the essay gave me a bit more of a challenge."
Idelisa is a little surprised when Zemeia comes up to her as she had been wrapped up in her thoughts. She looks at the Tiefling a moment, seeming to weigh her response. "I don't usually like essays, but I actually think I did really well on that part." She again pauses, reflecting before continuing. "I think I did fine on the first part too. I certainly had plenty of time to go through things."
"How do you suppose Aard'len did? And Katar?" she asks. "Did you see them?"
The tall dryad creaks out a nod, "I don't believe so, plenty of scared souls though but I think they will all recover soon. A very strange incident indeed though. Something must have made them act and change like that. But since there appears to be no further leads now, nor help needed, I will retire for the night. Keep lighting the path, Idelisa." 4then 18;Nat 1 + 3, reroll for 15 + 3)) Zemeia's confidence is short-lived as she is suddenly completely confounded by the essay prompts. She puts aside her work and closes her eyes for a moment, breathing deeply and subtly shifting as she moves through combat forms with her mace and shield. The memories connect to ideas in her studies and she lets the newly recalled information flow from her with a renewed sense of direction. As she finishes the essay, she can't help but be proud of the combat choreography she just created as a guide to her essay structure.Zemeia exits the exam feeling confident and sees Idelisa exit just ahead of her.
