feeling slightly better and running behind the others, Knap crashes into Mei crashing into whoever is in front of her. “Ouch, ooo, oops sorry Mei”
knap looks a little worse for ware, as though he’d woken up from a nightmare, though still with a smile on his face all the same. His old top hat is askew, he’s forced it down over horns that appear to have grown a little over the last couple of days, grown slightly jagged and taken on a strange hew, looking a little like petrified wood.
“sorry I’ve been missing in action. I have a feeling things aren’t going so good back home. Which only means I gotta knuckle down in school!”
“you figured out the black goo yet?” Knap says in jest to Malvyn knowing full well the tiefling had directed a significant lump of synapses to the cause.
Mae followed behind the others, not unwillingly, but not overly curious about the possible results, finding herself taking time out of her afternoon to support her floor mates, although she is also certain they don't really need her support in this matter. She is not the investigative type, though the incident in the kitchen where she worked sometimes did add something to this all.
"No, but I hope Professor Lang has something to share. So far we can only tell the black goo seems to transform things into dangerous critters but there is not much of a pattern to it as far as I can see at least, well, apart from us being present at all the incidents we know of so far."The purple-skinned tiefling answers Knap.
Piero, accompanying the group of floor mates, had walked near the back, though Mae managed to keep the last position. "I would hope you've read something about owlbears. We are studying monstrosities in our class," he says a bit smugly after Malvyn mentions reading about them.
Soon the group reaches the marshy lands of the Witherbloom campus. It's a short walk to the building where Professor Lang has her office. The dryad is waiting for you as you arrive and invites you into her office. "It is good to see you all again. I unfortunately have a bit of bad news. We tried to compare the sample of material from the frogs to that from the chest at Orientation. It seems though that sample was lost. We've been trying to figure out where it went with no luck so far."
"Well," Mae started, "If that doesn't sound suspicious I don't know what does. But unless there's some way to follow up on that now, I'm leaving and not taking up any more of the professor's time. Thank you Professor Lang."
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
"Well let me rephrase that then..."The purple-skinned tiefling says, glancing back at Piero with a strained smile. "...let's read up on what to do when facing one. I admit I haven't reached that part in the textbook yet."
Malvyn is clearly disappointed with the troubling news from Professor Lang, and Mae's eagerness to leave is not cheering him up. "It's a good thing we have found more of the black oily substance then." He says with a forced smile, looking between the professor and the aasimar, going on to tell Professor Lang about what had transpired in the kitchen of Bow's End Tavern. "Would you accept this and give examining it another try?" He asks with all the politeness he can muster, offering her what he collected from the cauldrons.
Insight to determine if the professor is speaking the truth: 21
"Suspicious indeed. Who did you give the original sample to, Mal? Perhaps we can follow trail whilst the Professor focusses on the new sample?", he suggests, not willing to give up so soon.
"Unless of course now that there have been three incidents a more official investigation is likely to be started?", he says looking to the Professor.
He will also watch the Professor's reaction closely to the conversation.
Mei, a bit more trusting of their professor than the others, simply wonders aloud, "Lost or... stolen?" Suddenly squatting so she can balance her notebook on her lap, she flips rapidly through the pages. Finding what she's looking for, she traces a finger over her notes. "Spells that can... locate objects... also known as object witching... Could work on the vial. Restrictions on the distance of effect though, hmm..."
((When next there is a chance, Mei would also ask after where the samples were kept and who has access to it))
Professor Lang nods, taking the new sample that Malvynoffers. "We will of course try to keep a closer eye on this. Tulk Tusktooth contacted me as well and mentioned you found this. He thought maybe it could have been one of the magical unguents used in various places throughout campus. We'll take a look and see." She turns to put the sample of material into a holder on her desk. "As for the original sample, it had been sent to the Campus Magic Laboratory to be examined. There were a few preliminary notes - really just that the substance showed no signs of magic any longer - but the sample can no longer be located. I can assure you that they have looked thoroughly."
Malvyndoes not detect any signs that the professor is hiding anything or not being truthful.
She then looks at Guardok. "There is no 'official' investigation really. But we are looking into the events to see how they might be prevented. I know this must be quite unnerving being present for all these little incidents. But there's certainly no reason to be concerned."
She then looks around at the others. "Is there anything else that I might help you with? I'm sorry I do not have any additional information yet. But I'm sure we'll get to the bottom of this soon."
"I have nothing else."The purple-skinned tiefling says, looking around at the others. "Will you let us know if there are any developments with this sample?" He then turns back and asks the professor with a polite smile, otherwise ready to leave.
No reason to be concerned about these little incidents.Guardok ponders the words a little surprised at the Professor's attitude. Students had been maimed and almost died, and he and his friends had risked their lives to stop it, and now to be patronised like that did not sit well with him.
He opens his mouth to speak his mind, but then Mal speaks instead, breaking his chain of thought. Probably for the best.
He simply turns and wanders off, muttering something unintelligible under his breath.
(OOC: Did Guard's insight roll of 22 last post reveal anything?)
Mei watches Guardok go with wide eyes. She too was surprised by Professor Lang's response, but wonders if there could be greater forces at play.
As the others begin to leave, she rises to her feet and steps forward. "A-Actually, Professor, maybe you could... have a look at Knap? He's been pretty unwell recently and, well... maybe you might have some insight about the change in his, um, physiology?" She looks apologetically to Knap for drawing attention to him, but she's been rife with worry the whole week about whatever blight has taken him.
Guardokdoes not get the sense that Professor Lang is lying about anything. She seems very upfront about the sample being missing. Her comments about the 'official' investigation seem more guarded and carefully selected. More like she is following a script.
The professor tells Malvyn, "Of course, I'll let you all know as soon as I can." Then as Mei interjects, she glances over to the satyr. "He's been unwell? There are certainly medical staff that could look at him if he's been having any issues. I'm not sure I'm the one you'd be looking for!"
"O-Oh, of course, sorry! I wasn't sure if--" she looks quizzically at the professor, head tilting to one side. Then her cheeks flush as she realizes she'd thought of this dryad like the Dryad at home. Of course Professor Lang wouldn't have the same Fey gifts or blessings.
"Thank you for your help, Professor! See you, um... see you in class!" With a little bow, Mei clutches her notebook against her chest and turns tail to hurry after Guardok. When she catches up, she puts a hand softly on his shoulder in reassurance but follows alongside quietly, turning new questions and possibilities and threads over and over in her head.
Mae raised a brow at the mention of Guardok being unwell and gave a look of concern as she followed along behind the others, arms wrapped around her with a pensive expression, humming to herself a bit softly.
Professor Lang bids you all a good day, and you head back outside to trek back to the main campus. "I presume our next destination is the campus labs?" Piero asks, seeming ready to head there right now.
Mei flicks the clasp to her card holster open and shut, over and over, until Piero's voice pulls her from her own thoughts. "It could be worth checking... at the very least we could ask after that silver-haired student? If they were seen at both the kitchen and the labs that might indicate they really are a person of interest."
She tips her head up to watch the clouds overhead as they walk, asking everyone more quietly, "What do you make of what the professor said? Do you... do you think faculty are really being so flippant over it all?"
"Me?" Piero asks, seeming a bit surprised to be the target of conversation from the group. "What do you think Mei? You strike me as being far more insightful than me."
"Come on, Piero. Don't be modest. Your opinion is as good as the rest of ours, why not share?", Guardok pipes up. He is certainly interested in what his room mate has to say, and it might distract him from thoughts of conspiracies. Or perhaps Piero feels the same as him, that something more is happening here.
The purple-skinned tiefling merely nods in agreement when Piero suggests visiting the campus labs, staying quiet for now, curious to hear more from their less than pleasant floor mate.
