As the group continues on, Piero gives Guardoka slight smile. "Well, I'm glad you think that of me. It's hard to know what the professor might be thinking. It does feel odd to me that there is not much response. There must be something more than what we know."
The walk soon take you back out of the swamp and onto the Central Campus. And you keep going until you get to the Campus Labs. This building is a short distance from the Biblioplex, tucked away a bit from most of the main paths. Like most places in this part of campus, it has a variety of tall arched entrances and sweeping ramps to the various levels of the multi-story building.
"Very odd", Guardok echoes. "I think we should go and see campus security after the lab. Remember when Knap lit a fire? That security bot was there in an instant. And yet a mimic attacks, or giant frogs, or steam elementals and nothing. A proper risk to life and no response at all. No-one has even asked to interview us! And we witnessed all three events".
He is obviously frustrated at the situation. At first it was a bit of excitement investigating events, but now he is worried that the next event will cause serious harm.
"Yes, the only explanations I can see is that the professors are not taking this as serious as they should yet, or that they are, but they prefer to keep us out of their own investigation for our own safety. I suppose an argument could be made for just leaving this to them but personally I am simply too curious to let this go, and also worried of course that the next prank might be a lethal one, especially if it involves owl bears." The purple-skinned tiefling says, glancing over at the others.
As they reach the campus labs, Malvyn enters and looks around for any signs or information tables, hoping to figure out who to speak to about the lost samples.
“Too true!” Knap seconds Guardok’s point about what causes a stir and what gets brushed under the rug. “The business with my fire was straight up injustice!” Halting in step, “And, I don’t know how I feel about the professor’s response, but seems a little irresponsible to me…I mean, a high mystic gotta maintain an air of aloof, but I think they’re covering something up.” Knap almost choked on the accusation as all other interactions suggests his teachers to be odd but ultimately good at heart.
Mei ruminates on everyone's theories, brows creasing with consternation. "Do you think I should tell one of the Professors about the rest of my Dreams? About the owlbear? Maybe if I'd told more people about the tavern..."
As they enter the lab, she adds lowly, "I keep wondering too... how much longer will they tolerate our interference? We've foiled multiple incidents now and I can't imagine they're happy about that." Presumably, this same person knows someone is seeking them out--that they'd been Dreamed upon. Though surely not by who?
Mei too, looks around for where next they might go or someone to speak with.
As you enter the building, you notice that there is not really much to see at the entrance. And there are not many people readily apparent. There's no information desk, but there is a sign pointing down a hallway to the left that says 'Administration'. Another long hallway goes straight ahead, where you see numerous doors.
Piero tells Mei, "Do you really think most folks would believe you if you told them about your dreams?"He then pauses before asking another question. "When you say 'they' who tolerate interference, I presume you mean you think some group or something is coordinating all these events?"
Mei isn’t used to not being believed about her Dreams. Back home, there are no words taken more seriously than a Dreamer’s warning of danger. At least her friends believed her.
She twirls a braid around her hand as she considers his other question. “Well… we found different sets of footprints at the pond. And then there’s also the person who pushed me out of the Dreaming. It just feels like… more than one person. Th-though I could be wrong!”
Looking between the two halls, she asks the others, “Should we split up? Try both hallways? I can Message to keep in contact.”
" I suggest we start with the administration's office." The purple-skinned tiefling says and walks down a hallway to the left, looking for more signs. "I agree with Mei, there seems to be more than one person behind this, or perhaps one that can take many shapes." He says calmly. "Also I would expect divination through dreaming to be an accepted part of the school of divination, just not any dreaming of course but Mei clearly knows a lot about it." He continues, giving the petite oracle a quick encouraging smile.
With everyone else so intent on pursuing every possible scant lead, Mae didn't bother arguing, she followed along quietly, humming still softly to herself now and then. When they arrived at the complex, she felt even more out of place. "Are you sure splitting up is a good idea? I don't really like the idea of sneaking around places we don't belong."
"I wasn't aware we were sneaking. If we weren't supposed to have access here I can only assume the doors would have been magically locked to us. Furthermore there were no signs saying anything about this being a restricted area. We are here on a legitimate business and I can take full responsibility for us being here should there be any trouble." The purple-skinned tiefling says firmly as he continues down the corridor.
"Let's all go to the administration office, like Mal said. We can announce ourselves there, all above board", Guardok adds following along. "Of course, they may not want to answer our questions, or let us search the actual labs, but we lose nothing by trying. And keep an eye out for long silver hair", he adds with a chuckle when he mentions silver hair, showing he is just joking.
Mei smiles gratefully back at Malvyn but pauses at the intersection of hallways, still looking down each. If they asked and were told no, then they would have to sneak. Or leave altogether. But if they looked first, they're neither breaking any rules nor bound by permissions.
She can picture her sister's face, smiling with a wink as she whispers after getting reprimanded, Better to ask for forgiveness than permission.
So, as the others head towards the Admin offices, Mei heads down the hallway with many doors.
((Will use her Natural 20 portent to Stealth away from the group and down the hallway to look around: 22 total.))
Malvyncontinues on towards the administration office. Guardok, at least initially, follows after him. Pierotoo goes along with the group.
A few doors are closed along the hallway, but at the end is a large room with a window. The door is ajar. The window shows a handful of people working at various desks.
The purple-skinned tiefling knocks gently on the door to get some attention from the staff, smiling politely as they look up at him. "Excuse us, we're coming here from a meeting with Professor Lang who mentioned there had been some samples she had left here that had gone missing. We were wondering if we could speak briefly with anyone who would know about that."He says with his most polite tone, and you realize he had gotten better at this since he first arrived at Strixhaven, less awkward and more confident with social interaction.
Meislips off down the other hallway. There are doors to either side, each with small windows inside. The first pair seem to have a variety of benches, glass vials, alchemy tools, and cupboards containing even more ingredients. To the right you only glimpse one gnome. To the left is a busier place with at least for people inside.
(Mae- you notice Meislip off and can choose where you go. Knap- same. Guardok - I think you were going with Malvyn, but am fine if you want to say you noticed Mei)
Mae finds what Mei is doing far more curious and interesting...and possibly dangerous, so she follows after her, but not super close, just a short ways away just in case she needs something.
A human woman stands up from one of the desks in the office and steps towards Malvynand the rest of the group. "Samples that had gone missing? Do you have more information about it? I presume you were sent on Professor Lang's behalf. If they were logged when they arrived, then we should be able to look it up. Do you have an item reference number?" She seems very pleasant, although as she awaits a response, she does seem to be looking you over.
The others in the room hardly seem to notice. Handling inquiries like this seems like it might be common.
Guardok sticks with Mal, even after noticing that their group has shrunk. When asked for the reference number, he shakes his head.
"The Professor didn't mention the reference number. I expect she forgot, but she sent the sample here on our behalf. Perhaps the date and a description would be enough to track it down?", he asks. "Your memory is better than mine, Mal", he says to the tiefling, prompting him to fill in the details, and inspiring him at the same time.

"Yes, there would have been two samples of a black oily substance recovered from the sites of two recent incidents at the campus, the first at the Biblioplex and the other at the Firejolt cafe if you have heard about those. Also I suppose missing samples would be uncommon enough in itself to help determine what we're here about."Malvin continues with a perfectly polite and humble tone.
