Unaware that everyone saw her despite feeling quite stealthy, Mei moves down the hallway--not quick enough to draw attention, but with a purposeful stride that gives off an air of I'm supposed to be here. She glances into the windows as she goes, rising to her tipetoes to do so, as she looks for a lab that seems suited for storing and testing substances.
The human woman looks at Malvynand Guardokwith a somewhat blank expression. "Ah, no reference number?" She seems discouraged. "That will make it much harder to find. But we will see what we can do. Samples from the Biblioplex and Firejolt Cafe. Now were these submitted together?"
A gnome boy dressed in a first-year uniform hops up and comes over to where you are talking to the woman. "Biblioplex? Firejolt? You guys... you're the ones that fought off those creatures! Are you telling me that samples from those cases got lost?" He seems very eager to meet you, and very surprised to hear the samples are gone. He nudges the woman, "They're the ones that fought the mimic at Orientation!"
The woman seems curious, but not nearly as enthusiastic. "I think I did hear about that. Some small mishap, wasn't it? But at least I have a date. Let me look." She heads over a filing cabinet and opens up a drawer.
The gnome meanwhile continues to look wide-eyed at the three floormates. "You're here to follow up on samples from those events? Do you think they were all connected somehow? I'd heard they were just the sorts of things that happen now and then on campus."
Meipeers into the windows of the first two doors. As previous described, your guess is that these would be more for making potions or alchemical concoctions. Not for analysis.
You move on to the next doors. Peering into the one on the right, you see all kinds of plants and plant specimens layed out on tables and shelves. There is a large orc working on one plant, and a dwarf man and dwarf woman working on others. Through the door to the left is a room with metal tables, racks of previously prepared liquids, and numerous tools. This looks to Meiat least to be more for analytical investigations. Inside that room are two women, a gnome and a half-elf. They seem to have some rocks of some sort that they are taking pieces from and running tests on.
Mei taps her lips in thought as she debates entering. Looking back down the hallway to check for anyone coming, she startles at sight of Mae, hands slapping over her mouth to trap a surprised yelp.
"Stars above," she whispers with a smile, "I didn't know you were back there." Waving her friend closer, she explains, "It looks like this is the lab for analysis. Should we... go in and talk to them?"
(OOC: Are the two women in the lab wearing lab coats or anything of the sort? Or have identification badges of any kind?)
Equally wide-eyed, and with a smile Knap says to the gnome "Maybe connected, maybe not, and for sure magical mishaps are common on campus but we’re a little curious to their origins. It’s like an extra curricular interest.” Knap tries to recall if he recognises the gnome. history: 1
The purple-skinned tiefling nods in agreement with his roomie, smiling at the quite accurate description of what they were up to. "We're curious ones you see and also like to be thorough, qualities that I think are generally appreciated here at Strixhaven. As we all obviously are new here we don't really know how common these mishaps are but the fact that the black oily substance was found on each scene suggests they are at least connected somehow and I also think it is fair to assume the substance is the cause for these incidents."He says with a calm smile, glancing curiously over at woman searching her cabinet, his tail swating slowly with anticipation.
Guardok waits as his floor mates speak, and then adds his own question.
"Even if these incidents do happen from time to time, what about samples that go missing? Does that happen from time to time as well?", he asks genuinely curious, and not being accusatory. "Aren't they tracked by magic or something?".
Mae blushed a little bit, "Sorry, I just didn't think you should be walking off all by yourself." She walked closer, not really trying to be discreet, peering in at the room as well. She sighed a little, "I mean I guess, but I still don't think we really should be here poking around so much. But if you insist I'm right beside you, Mei." She nodded even as her hand slipped into her bag, her fingers finding the soft leathery head of her hand drum.
"I'm glad you came," she says up at the Aasimar. Seeming wholly unapologetic, she grins, bright eyed, as she reaches out to take Mae's free hand, "I insist," and pulls the taller woman gently along with her to the door.
Perhaps she's romanticizing this little espionage mission a bit.
Mei gives a small knock-knock before twisting the knob to enter.
((Just in case I eclipse it with this post!! OOC: Are the two women in the lab wearing lab coats or anything of the sort? Or have identification badges of any kind?))

Knapdoes not seem to recall the gnome. Then again, there are certainly fellow students that may only be in one or two of your classes that might not immediately come to mind. The gnome does reply to Guardok'squestion. "Tracked by magic? Well, we don't specifically do anything magically. That can influence the samples and create problems for the analysis. Well, that's what I've heard at least. I'm not really an expert, thus me sitting up here at a desk." He smiles sheepishly at you all. "I do think though the material identification process provides a sort of hook for divination magic. It makes using a simple Locate spell work quite well for these things." He then sighs. "Oh, but you don't have the number."
Eventually the woman comes back over to Malvyn, a small file card in her hand. "There is a sample that was noted as coming from the Roleplay Guild chest that was in the Biblioplex. The date was the day after Orientation. And it is described as a black oily substance." She looks over the card. "It seems to indicate it is to be housed in the main specimen analysis laboratory. Material Identification is 74069A. I suppose you could go inquire in the lab. There is no indication it has been destroyed or reported lost."
"I'm glad you came," she says up at the Aasimar. Seeming wholly unapologetic, she grins, bright eyed, as she reaches out to take Mae's free hand, "I insist," and pulls the taller woman gently along with her to the door.

(OOC - I actually didn't see THIS post, but caught the other!)
Meiand Maesee the women inside turn towards the door as you knock. They then look a tiny but surprised as you enter. "Hello?" says the half-elf woman. "Is there something I can help you with?" The gnome watches on, seeming intrigued as to where this is going to go.
"That's really helpful, thanks", Guardok replies, wondering whether the records were not up-to-date or if the Professor was mistaken. He gives Mal and Knapp a confused look and then turns to leave, before realising he has no idea where the lab is.
"So, this lab, can you give us some direction please?".
He assumes Mal will have written down the reference.
Malvyn being nothing if not thorough does indeed pick up a pen and a small notebook dedicated for the investigation from his ever present shoulderbag and carefully writes down the stated material identification number while waiting for directions to the laboratory. He wondered if the Professor had not been truthful, if she hoped they would give up on their extracurricular investigation.
"Hi! Hello! Sorry to bother you--but, um, yes! We're hoping there is!" Mei answers as she enters. She looks up to Mae, wondering how best to broach the subject of their investigation.
"Er... we were wondering if you knew anything about two samples of an oily black substance that, um, purportedly went missing from here? They were quite important."
Mae just looked back at Mei and shrugged. "Yes they were taken from the scenes of a couple incidents this year, when that chest attacked people, and then at the tavern the other night. My floor mates here seem to think something nefarious is going on, or it's some terrible prank. Either way, we've heard the samples went missing and at the least to put their minds at ease hopefully you can tell us what happened to them. Or seen anyone with..umm..what was it Mei, silver hair?"
When Guardokasks about direction to the lab, it's the gnome that pipes up. "Just head back down that hall, make a left, and then it is the second door on your left."
The half-elf woman replies to Meiand Mae'squestion. "Ah, you're here to ask about that too? Professor Lang was just here recently asking the same thing! I heard her asking one of the supervisors. Evidently they couldn't find it!" The gnome then speaks up. "Yea! Can you believe it? Evidently it was connected to that thing that happened at Orientation." She lowers her voice. "I didn't realize there was an investigation happening. Sort of intriguing, right?"
"Thanks for your help", Guardok says almost over his shoulder as he turns and rushes off in the direction the gnome gave.
"Come on you two, no time to waste", he says, although in truth they weren't in a rush. He was just happy that this trip was actually leading somewhere rather than being a dead end.
"Yes, yes, we're coming." The purple-skinned tiefling says with a small smile, seeming to appreciate what he percieves is excitement with the small earth genasi, quickly following along to the labs.
Knap gives Mei and Mae a quick, slightly confused wave goodbye.
In his politest posture, he stands behind Mal and Guardok.

As well as any silver-haired individuals.
