Mei's conversation with Piero is more enlightening than she expected. Never had she thought of her gift as something with a... self-preservation instinct. None of them truly knew when it began in their line, nor where exactly it came from. Could it be something more than just an inherited ability? She's a bit distracted the rest of their practice together, but seems in high spirits after her interaction with the normally tight-lipped Piero.
Later (perhaps the night before leaving for the meet?), Mei snaps her book closed with a start at the voice--caught reading something with a cover she clearly tries to hide. When she realizes it's Knap, though, she smiles up at him, always happy to see her satyr floormate. The oracle bothers him far less with prodding questions about his health now that he seems changed rather than ill.
"The petal..? Oh! Yes," she glances back at the space where the potted flower usually sits. "I, um, decided to plant her near the pond we found. It's just... I don't think the person who gave it to me, uh... h-he doesn't--" Mei's gaze drops away, expression dimming. She's quiet a moment before looking back up at Knap with a smile. "It seemed better to let her grow out in the sun instead. Do you think she'll be okay out there?"
“Boys”, he says dryly followed by a long raspberry trill of the lips. “Common denominator of most catastrophes. Don’t we know it both…if you ever want help planning revenge that could be a fun side quest to all our studying.” He takes a seat cross legged, his smile at odds with the slight darkening of his eyes and the occasional faint wisp of oily smoke from his lips. “The flower will be fab’, it’s one of them rhizomanic plants” he mispronounces rhizomatic without noticing. “It means they’re extra clever, they have more beneath the surface, they’re a philosophical fruit. They’ll be all good.”
Mei laughs at the raspberry and offer of revenge, then quickly swipes at her eyes as Knap sits. "Boys," she echoes. Her eyes are drawn to his darkening ones and a wave of goosebumps ripples down the backs of her arms. She's had a front row seat to how much the satyr has changed--not just the blight that seems to reside in him now, but also his growing strength. Remembering her manners, she breaks her stare by glancing down at her hands.
"I think you must be rhizomanic too, then," she says with a grin, pronouncing it the same way. "Extra clever and more beneath the surface." Her eyes lift back to his. "Are you doing alright with all these... changes? You said it's connected to your Pond, right? I could always do a reading or try and Dream about it, if you'd like?"
The week passes by rather quickly - especially for Guardokwho is immensely busy. But soon Thursday ends and Friday has arrived.
For the floormates who wish to travel to see the gymnastics meet, they will need to leave immediately following classes. A coach will take them far to the southwest of Strixhaven to the city of Silkmeadow. This is the home of the Owlin and is a well-known center of commerce. It's also has a thriving artisan community, most especially in the area of textiles. They won't arrive until extremely late Friday (really after midnight Saturday). You will have all day Friday, so will need to arrange accommodations. Then you will come back early Sunday to get to Strixhaven Sunday evening.
Guardokon the other hand has a meeting with the Gymnastics Club Friday evening and will travel Saturday morning by teleportation circles. They will be able to return late Saturday the same way. Of course, if he wishes to stick with his roommates, he could get his own accommodations and travel back with them. (Or arrange to teleport back Sunday.)
During her break before Magical Physiologies class, Maeruns into Larine. Not literally this time, although she does playfully bump against the aasimar once she sees her, making a joke about it. She just wanted to make sure to see her before she leaves for the weekend.
Aurora also finds Malvyn when he's between classes, making sure to wish him a good weekend. After class she sends him off with a brief kiss on the cheek.
As the group is heading from class to get going, Cadoras comes running up to Mei. "Almost forgot this!" he says, thrusting a big bag into her hands. "It's nothing really. Some pickled peanuts. Kind of plain really. But if you're hungry on the road." The bag smells faintly of onion and vinegar - and perhaps a slight peanut odor. "Safe travels! And wish Guardok good luck for me!"
(The time has come to leave. As a note, I have put a map of Arcaivos on the campaign page. Feel free to post character's preparations to leave, say good-byes, and we'll soon hit the road!)
"C-Cadoras? Forgot wha--!" Mei stammers as a bag of pickled nuts is suddenly in her hands. She stares down at it in surprise, before looking up to Cadoras with a pink-cheeked smile. "Nothing from you is plain, you know," she giggles. "Thank you."
Before he can run off again, she catches a few of his fingers and stops him for a quick hug. "I'll tell him. And you be safe too, okay? Watch out for owlbears." The longer the hug lasts, the hotter and redder her ears become. Mei clears her throat and pulls away, walking backwards to catch up with the others. She grins and gives Cadoras a little wave, nearly dropping the bag of nuts, and promises, "I-I'll bring you back a souvenir!" before turning to hurry after her floormates.
She looks once over her shoulder, hoping to catch his smile one more time, then is ready to leave campus for the first time in months. Off to a city on her home plane she's only ever read about and to see Guardok no doubt sweep the competition at the meet.
The purple-skinned tiefling would feel a heat to his cheeks as Aurora gives him the farewell kiss on his cheek. All in all he felt less and less awkward trying to be a partner with each day that passed in her pleasant company though. Sometimes he wondered what people whispered about him somehow having the attention of someone like her but these thoughts occupied him less and less too. He would return the kiss and wish the raven-haired performer a good time with her friends as he was away, also showing her a number of books he had found in the Biblioplex on the subject of their destination, already having read up some on Silkmeadow and what places to visit while there. He also made a mental note of finding Aurora something nice to bring back for her. He wondered if he would miss her much.
Guardok is fully focussed on the gymnastics competition, and plans to spend as much time with the gymnastics team as possible and to practice as much as possible beforehand. To that end he plans to use the teleportation circle to get to Silkmeadow. And with the playactor's guild performance so soon afterwards, he would want to maximise his rehearsal time for that as well, and so would want to get back as early as possible.
He does however make sure he sees his friends off on their coach, getting a bit choked up at the thought of them putting in so much effort to support him and the rest of the team.
Mae lights up when she runs into (again, not literally this time) Larine, looking very appreciative of the chance to see her again before she left. She gave her several reassurances that she would only be gone for the weekend and return late Sunday. Before parting for good she gave her a long gentle hug and kiss on her head. She otherwise packed only what she needed, opting to travel as light as possible.
The floormates, other than Guardok, all board the coach shortly after class. The vehicle moves swiftly, but it is still a long ride. Initially you pass through relatively flat plains as you slowly approach the Chimneycomb mountains to the west. For those have read about Silkmeadow, there are a number of renowned spots in the city. Perhaps of the most interest to some, there is Silkmeadow Library. Of course, the archives it holds are far less than the Biblioplex. But it is a well-known repository of knowledge. Another hallmark of the city is The Grand Bazaar. For most, this is probably the signature feature of the city. Most famous for fine silks and cottons and exotic spices, items from all across Arcaivos can be found there.
SIlkmeadow is also the home of The Aven Academy. Known for its warrior-poets, it is said to be filled with the sounds of ancient poetry and the clash of weapons. The Silkmeadow Theater also has a strong reputation for both dramatic and musical performance. While Strixhaven may have a larger number of budding creative talents, the Silkmeadow Theater is home to more well-established professionals.
It's approaching dinner time when you cross a large river which many of you might know originates in the Chimneycomb mountains near to where the city of Heavenfell is located. There is a moderately sized in there, and the coach pauses fairly briefly to allow you all to get a bit to eat and stretch your legs. The land approaching the river had become hillier, though you are still quite a way from the mountains. Your understanding is your path will not truly go through the mountains, but rather skirt the lands where the mountains meet the sea.
The break in your travel, quite brief, is now over as the coachman calls out for everyone to get back on board.
Malvyn would spend most of the journey delving into his books on Silkmeadow, sharing tidbits of information with his friends. He decides to visit the bazaar to find some fine black silk garment for Aurora and maybe some exotic perfume if he has enough gold for that. He's also curious to see if they have time for some entertainment the next evening.
He would join the others stretching his legs and his tail, taking in the scenery with the mountains ahead, but quickly finding his way back to his seat as the journey continues on it's last stretch, watching his horns as he steps inside the coach. "Anything you all hope to do in Silkmeadow apart from cheering on Guardok and the rest of the Strixhaven gymastics team?"The purple-skinned tiefling asks the others once they are back comfortably seated in the coach.
Knap’s face has been pressed against or hanging out a window the whole ride. He spotting birds and the way one landscape would enfold into the next.
He was grateful for the moment rest as cramps were buckling up his calves. He does a couple of squats before reboarding.
“hmmm, did you mention something about the Aven Academy? Warrior-poets? “ Knap responds to Malvyn with much enthusiasm. “We should also, how do they say…when you go to the city… paint the town red.”
Mae kept to herself as they travelled along for the most part, watching the scenery out the window, humming to herself now and then, and taking the opportunity to try and sleep and rest. She certainly wasn't unpleasant with anyone, she looked more tired, distracted, wistful perhaps. Perhaps for the first time since her arrival at school, she was feeling a little bit homesick, the spacious plains and tall mountains reminding her of part of her homeland. Added to that everything going on at school and she felt herself withdraw into herself some, until they stopped. While they paused in their travel she knelt down in the earth, hands planted down in front of her, lightly clutching at the dirt, staying there for a long moment or two before going to get some food and drink, keeping a bit extra for the remainder of the trip.
Once back in, waited before answering Malvyn, her golden toned voice soft, "I hadn't planned on anything. I didn't know how long the event would last. I suppose if there happens to be time and chance for a performance that would be nice, but I won't be bothered if not. Maybe once school lets out, if there is time to do a more proper visitation it might be worth it. I suppose we'll see."
Mei is an absolute chatterbox of excitement throughout the trip. She switches between painting the view from the window and painting the shirts for everyone to wear tomorrow, though each bump in the road causes her hand to slip, forcing her to start over many, many times. She also passes around some rather stinky pickled peanut snacks--which have to be prestidigitated to make palatable. When she's not talking or painting, she's lulled to sleep by the rocking carriage. Poor Mae likely spends much of the ride with the Dreamer slumped against her or with her head lying in her lap.
After their dinner break, as the coachman calls them back, Mei is feeding the coach horses some of her leftover carrots, cooing over their hard work and attempting to give them pets. ((For funsies, Animal Handling: 12+2 14))
Once on their way again, Mei also answers Malvyn's question, "I'd love to see the Bazaar! I've heard so much about the artisan works they sell there. And I bet we could get some red paint there too, Knap. Oh! And maybe they have buskers? You could do an impromptu street performance, Mae!" Rippling with excitement, Mei looks back to the tiefling, "What about you, Mal?
Malvyn had never heard the expression paint the town red and made a mental note to look it up back at the Biblioplex but he suspected it wasn't anything as sinister as it sounded to him so he simply nods and smiles politely to his roomie. He also nods as then radiant aasimar suggests going back to Silkmeadow at some later date. As the dreamer chatters on he occasionally nods and smiles at her too but soon he returns to his reading, getting more focused again as the petite oracle takes her naps.
"Ah yes, I was hoping to see the bazaar too, but I suppose we'll see what we will have time for, our priority should be to cheer on Guardok of course."He tells Mei.
"Of course," Mei echoes. "And I'm alllmoosst done with the shirts. His face came out a bit different on each one, but..." The Dreamer holds up the current shirt she's working on. On it is Guardok's face in chibi style, with the words, 'He will, He will Rock Y,' written around it. She clearly has two more letters to paint on. "Do you think he'll like them?"
"I...ehm...I am no art critic..." The purple-skinned tiefling starts awkwardly, scratching his neck. "...but I know he will love them coming from you Mei."He adds with a friendly smile. "So we are all wearing one of those in Silkmeadow are we?"He continues, sounding a bit awkward again.
Hearing Malvyn's edgy reply, Mei quickly starts, "Oh! Well, Cadoras said it's a song people sing at tournaments! A-And it's a play on rock since Guardok's an earth genasi and a bard and--" she smiles brightly, "get it?"
The human deflates a little realizing it’s not as fun if you have to explain it. "B-but you don't have to wear it if you don’t want to!”
The purple-skinned tiefling sitting opposite the petite oracle squirms with awkwardness, the end of his tail wrapping around his lower leg as he realizes he made another faux pas. "No, no, of course I will wear it."He says with an insecure smile, trying desperately to repair his mistake. "So there is a song about a person rocking the letter Y sung at gymnastic competitions then, perhaps we can sing it together?" The increasingly awkward tiefling goes on a little too quickly, but realizing he is likely just making things worse he decides to stop talking, quickly returning to his books, his cheeks heated with embarassment.
Mei looks confused a moment, then looks at the shirt and laughs. “It’s supposed to say *you*, I just haven’t finished yet!” Stretching her foot across the coach, she taps Malvyn’s foot with her own. ”It’s really okay though! I should’ve asked you guys first if you wanted to wear Guardok’s face,” she giggles.
“I’m not sure if the gymnastic meets are as intense as Mage Tower games. I’m probably going a bit overboard, really…” Mei tucks the shirt away to finish later at the inn. “Just want him to know we believe in him. It’s probably hard competing without the support of an entire circus family, right?” With a nod and smile to herself, she says resolutely, “So we’ll just have to cheer that much louder.”
"WOULD THIS BE LOUD ENOUGH?"The purple-skinned tiefling's voice suddenly booms inside the coach as he looks up from his books. "Oh, sorry, it is just that I can perhaps help out with the loud part at least?"He continues nervously in his normal tone, then returning to read about the history of the Aven academy.
