Knap slings a friendly grin to the half-elf at the facilities office counter before moving into the room and greeting the human.
“Experience…,
I’ll be the first to admit
I like the landscape more on the wild side found along the margin of rivers and creeks. I was raised by The Pond,” he says the name in Sylvan, “a sacred site for my Druidic family of Satyrs. A nexus of energies and portals connecting the Feywild and elsewhere. We never really needed to keep it clean, I guess you could say we were in sync. Our little nest. And living there I got pretty good at picking out the berry when ripe. Or knowing when a little burn off could rejuvenate the woods. My godmother was a flower. As for garden culture, when The Pond first became a Seelie Court site of interest, my family for a while managed the woodlots, windbreaks and parks as tourism peaked.” Knap’s head dips a little. “But I’m happy to start by sweeping, or working my way up to tending the book garden or something like that. Oh Addition to my experience not just a little while ago me and my friends took out the trash AKA a pseudo- mimic prowling the biblioplex. I threw a rock at it.”
As the purple-haired dreamer joins him, Malvyn looks up at her and her stack of books, not seeming to understand her joke at first, but then a smile spreads on his face and he even chuckles quietly. "Ah yes, I suppose the Iron Lifters Society should move their practice to shelving books around this place instead of lifting iron for no productive reason at all."He says with a slightly dry tone. He really seems to appreciate the company though and smiles and nods to Guardok as the genasi joins them too.
As Mei and Guardok starts to discuss their favourite classes, the purple-skinned tiefling politely asks them to keep their voices down, reminding them where they are. "I can't really decide yet, ask me again tonight when I have had some time to process the classes of this morning." He says quietly, glancing around to see if there was any other of the floor mates joining them. "So, did you join any clubs just now?" He asks, seeming curious about where the others took off after class.
To Guardok, Mei replies, "Just skimming. I, um, miss a lot in class, you know? So I thought maybe if I read ahead I'll be less likely to fall behind." Struggling to see Guardok over her stack of tomes, she pushes them aside, smiling as she sees his face again. "And we don't have to study-study. Did you find any of the lectures today, um... difficult? We could just review what was discussed instead. Or maybe go through the syllabus to plan for the semester?"
Mei lowers her voice further at Malvyn's admonishment. As softly as she normally speaks it's usually the opposite she's scolded for--speak up, child. We're oracles, not mice. She wonders if his library is usually near silent, though the Biblioplex is a multi-use communal space so she hopes it's not against the rules for there to be at least some chatter--there's a stage in the middle, after all.
Still, she whispers back, "Um... I think I'm already signed up for mine. Or at least I hope so." Her gaze trails upwards, trying to remember if there was anything additional she needed to do to join. Then she blinks and looks to Guardok. "Ah, did you end up joining the Playactor's Guild?"
When Malvyn admonishes he and Mei, Guardok looks around not really understanding what he means having never been in a proper library before.
"I am sorry, Mal", he whispers, conscious of his naivety.
He then carries on talking in more hushed tones.
"I joined the gymnastics club. I think I have to go to Silverquill campus to join the Playactors. I plan to go tomorrow, although I also have the gymnastics tryouts", he answers as he starts to fidget. The pressure of being quiet and studying seeming to put him on edge. He starts to reach into his pack for his maracas, which he would normally play to release the nervous energy, before stopping as he realises it would be noisy. Instead he takes a deep breath in and slowly releases it.
"Have you been back to the dorm since class, Mei? You had a delivery", he says with a smile intrigued by who it was from, his nervous energy seemingly forgotten.
"Oh! You have to go to Silverquill specifically? Do you want company? Maybe Knap at least, since he wants to be in Silverquill next year?" She'd love to go watch the tryouts as well, but worries spectators might not be welcome.
Then Mei feels the nervous energy radiating off of Guardok like a coiled spring that needs release and watches curiously. When he takes a deep breath, she unconsciously inhales and exhales with him. It occurs to her that not everyone studies the same way and that, perhaps, a more casual location would be better for their group study sessions. She's about to suggest they move to the book gardens, for both Knap and Guardok alike, when Guardok mentions something at their dorm.
Amethyst eyes owlishly wide, she utters dumbly and forgetting to whisper, "Huh? A delivery?" Her head slowly tilts to one side. "From my brother... maybe? He said he'd send some pears from our orchard when they were--" her brow furrows, "--ripe." She straightens in the chair, tempted to go right now to the dorms to find out.
"Oh, it's quite okay Guardok, I suppose I'm just used to libraries being a place where you keep you voices down."Malvyn says quietly with a friendly smile. He then listens with some interest as the genasi mentions visiting the Silverquill college and having gymnastics tryouts, but he seems quite oblivious to Guardok's nervous energy, himself always having found his true calm in libraries. As Guardok asks about Mei's delivery he gets curious again. "I thought you went to the dorms after class?" He quietly asks Mei with a curious smile.
"Me? Oh no, I haven't been back since I left this morning. I think Mae went back though?" Mei hedges, finally remembering to keep her voice down. "Maybe it's a letter from the Dean? Do you think I'm in trouble? What if they've decided they don't want someone with m-my--" she gulps and pulls on the ends of her two braids, "--my foresight? I should have assured them I wouldn't use it to cheat on exams. O-or start a panic." The petite wizard groans worriedly to herself as she flops back again in the chair, wincing as she whacks the back of her head with a dull thud against it.
The half-elf looks at Knap for a moment. "Alright, no experience in maintaining lawns then. You prefer picking up trash or sweeping? And what days and times are you available?" He explains a wide variety of options, plus sounds relatively open to negotiating a schedule that works for you. "We could perhaps have you start later today if you can. Or later this week?"
Guardok nods enthusiastically, "I don't mind anyone coming along to the tryouts. As long as you aren't needed at your own activities".
He is a little taken aback by Mei's worry when he mentions the delivery, "I doubt it is from the Dean. It was a note accompanied by a purple flower. I expect Knapp would know what kind of flower, it was kind of puffy. Anyway, I don't think you get a flower when you are in trouble". As he describes the flower, he makes a ball shape between his hands.
He is much more relaxed now talk has moved away from study, and the volume of his voice starts to rise slightly, less aware of trying to keep to a whisper but still speaking quietly
“No, no experience” Knap smiles “but there is nothing like a good sweep to cleanse a space. I’ll take it! But, if you don’t mind, I’d prefer to start later in the week? Everything is still new and confusing and I’m still settling in.” Knap for a moment remembers that tryouts for Iron Lifters is sometime this week also, he must ask Mei if she remembers when. “How about a morning thing? Monday, Wednesday, Friday, 7.45-8.45am.” Knap’s snaps straight and tall as if waiting for his first assignment.
Malvyn can't help but listen to Mei and Guardok but he soon returns to his notes and books, checking that he got things right, finding structure in the new information, slowly expanding his true knowledge. He keeps checking the clock though, while also glancing around for any stragglers to the Study Group. "So, have you made plans for dinner yet. Do you want to return to the tavern or do you prefer dinner at the Dresar Hall refectory?" He pauses his studying to ask the other two.
Mei's fears are immediately squashed by Guardok's explanation and she blushes, first, for her dramatics and jumping to conclusions. Then, second and far more deeply, over the fact that it's a flower awaiting her. Her focus remains split at the table as she wonders about the who and why of it, but she also asks Guardok more about the gymnastics tryouts and if he's prepared a routine for it or will just follow his heart in the moment--which she's quite confident he could do.
When she notices how much more relaxed the genasi seems, she thinks again of how they might make this study group work for everyone. Snacks maybe? For Guardok. He seems a kinesthetic learner as well, so finding a way to incorporate movement might help too. Thinking of Knap, the Book Gardens or an outdoor space might be best--though it might also find him more distracted? Is he a tactile learner too? Malvyn is clearly in his element in the library, though she suspects he'll do a lot more studying outside of their group as well, so perhaps he wouldn't mind a change of scenery when they all get together? What about Chara? And Mae if she'd ever like to join them?
Mei idly starts to sketch the group in a little study scene, mind far too full to focus on her notes. As Malvyn asks them about dinner, she sets her pencil down and stretches her arms above her head, twisting her back this way and that with a satisfied little noise. "Free dinner is always nice," she smiles. "Maybe we could save the tavern for special occasions?" She does her best not to seem excited to get back to the dorms, though her blush is renewed at the prospect.
The half-elf tells Knap, "Alright, an early riser are you? I think that will work. Start Friday?" he suggests. "Just show up here and we'll get you started."
Guardok shakes his head when Mei asks if he has a routine, and explains that he is not even sure if that was needed or whether it was just various tests of skill.
When talk turns to food, he is enthusiastic as always, "I am happy to go to the dinner hall at the dorm again. I think keeping the tavern for the weeks end is a good idea, unless there is something interesting happening there".
Talk of food also seems to resonate with his stomach, as it emits a low rumble. "I think I am going to head back to my room so I can change out of this uniform before dinner. I think I will get more out of study time when there is something to study for. You know, a test or something".
With a hint of hesitance Malvyn nods in agreement with having dinners at the Dresar Hall refectory unless there was a special occasion at the tavern. To him there would likely be interesting things happening at the tavern tonight even, but he couldn't have his thoughts stray. He was here to study after all, that was what he had came here to do.
"Well, there will most likely be a test at the end of each course but I suppose you might feel it is too early to start preparing for that." He says quietly to Guardok with a friendly smile.
The study group didn't quite turn out as the purple-skinned Tiefling had expected, only Mei and Guardok had turned up and now Guardok was leaving. Maybe it would be better to have their studying done back in their lounge. He made a mental note of bringing this up with the others at dinner.
Mei nods in agreement and rises from the table with her collected things, stacking the heavy books to carry once more. "Is it okay if I---hnnggg--walk with you?" she says as she lifts them. "Are you going to stay longer, Malvyn? I could bring you back a snack?"
At Mei's question, the purple-skinned Tiefling looks at the clock again and then at her and Guardok as they are about to leave. "A bit longer yes, there might still be others turning up to study I guess and I said I would be here, but I'll see you back in the lounge later, or at dinner at the latest, shall we say at six? And no need to bring any snacks thanks." He says quietly with a grateful smile.
"Friday it is!" Knap chirps a little too loudly and exits the facilities office!
He returns to the Biblioplex as some of the gang are getting ready to leave. "Heading back to Dresar? I'm going to spend 20 minutes trying to understand computational magic a little more." Knap knows he's not gonna be able to borrow notes on this one.
"Six! Sounds good," Mei grins back, her chin sat heavily on the top book to keep the stack steady. "But, you know... if you'd like to go to the tavern, you don't have to eat with us at the refectory." Her plum-colored brows arch ever so slightly, knowing just who he might see there. "You'll have a weekly income now, right? So don't let those of us without one hold you back from doing things you'd enjoy."
As Knap arrives, Mei gives him a little wave. "Yes, we're headed back! If you need any help though, I'll just be back at 402. I had a, um..." she shifts the books in her arms, gaze flicking elsewhere, "d-delivery, so I should go grab it. And I wanted to check on Mae too! I haven't seen her much today. I hope her first day of classes went alright."
"Oh...um...no I would eat with you of course."Malvyn says, a hint of a blush in his purple cheeks. "See you later then." He adds quickly, giving Mei and Guardok a wave before returning to his books and notes.
