I might alter this to be a Rogue/Swashbuckler, but decided to give it a try as a fighter/duelist. Basically, you charming, swashbuckling, rigging-climber.
I have not yet added equipment (including the magic item) or a full backstory, but the basics are there.
Had a backstory I've always wanted to try, and maybe a pirate ship campaign is the way to go:
He's a human fighter, level 1 (or 3 if we're starting there), but he's 50 years old. He used to be something, but has no idea what. At 50, he's lived most of a life that he doesn't remember. Nothing revolutionary there, but there's one more thing: magic doesn't affect him in any way, shape or form. At first, this sounds OP, I'm sure, to be unaffected by Fear, Fireball or Power Word: Kill, but you know what else doesn't affect him? Cure Wounds. Or Bless. Or Feather Fall. Or any type of Restoration or Resurrection. Maybe even, at the DM's discretion, any magical item he tries to use loses its power while he's holding it, and regains it once he puts it down. He has no idea why he's this way, but maybe he'll find out in the campaign. Maybe once the mystery's solved, magic will work on him like everyone else, or maybe not. Maybe he'll multiclass into whatever he used to be (starting at L1 again, of course), or maybe not. It's up to the DM.
If you pick me I'll make a fighter, or another non-magical character, using the Standard Array. And he could start with a magic item of the DM's choosing, that he has no idea is magic, because it's never done anything magical while he's held it.
