Starker:”I seldom am jealous of the clerical prayer book, but I do admire the artistry of Contagion and its customizability! How I envy you having that in your arsenal!”
Xymox adjusts his cloak and steps away from the glyphs. “Well, these walls are stubbornly mute. If we’re using Passwall, let’s decide where. If not, let’s return below and pry open the rest of this crypt before it grows any more surprises with teeth.”
Should we proceed to the cells area and check the device there? We were hasty in examining it, assuming it was trapped last time. But perhaps it holds more
The Company relocates to the door in front of the room with the curious puzzle on a pedestal, away from the oh-so-enticing three wheels set in the wall. The door is open. Beyond you can see the room with the device at the far end. Two cells are on each side of the short hallway. Bars enclose these cells with a small 4’ x 5’ door to seal them. A corpse lies in each of the cells. All are humanoids in rags for clothes, their bodies are desiccated. At the far end of the room is a pedestal of basalt that is 4’ high. Sitting on the pedestal is a curious item made of several metal alloys that appear unusual. The item is roughly spherical with pyramidal and cylindrical protrusions. If there is a pattern to the pieces of this item it is unclear at this point.
"I'm guessing it's some sort of torture device and activating it would inflict various unpleasantries on the victims in the cells, but that's just a guess.
I'll check the hard way to see if it's trapped."
Chadwick will first check for traps (investigation 9) then will see if the protrusions can be pushed or turned.
Chadwick picks up the strange device from the pedestal and begins to manipulate it. The device can rotate on itself (like a Rubik's cube), the knobs and protrusions can be rotated, depressed and clicked to undepress. He does several actions and a 'click' is heard from the cell door near him. The door swings ajar a bit, opening in towards the cell. (Green circle on the map)
Starker, looking over Sir Chadwick’s shoulder:”Well done, Sir Chadwick. May I examine it to try to ascertain its principles and other potential outcomes?”
Xymox searches the room. There is the dedicated remains of a human shackled to the wall. Rotting rags remain of his clothes. The outline of a possible doorway is along the back wall.
Starker manipulates the device after ‘accepting’ it from Chadwick. He twists, turns, depresses and clicks. No apparent pattern has been able to be determined. No seeming pattern can be made out of the movements.
While Starker plays with his new toy, all of the dead prisoners rise up, freed of their shackles. Xymox is attacked. The other three crowd the bars. They can attack through the bars with their target getting partial cover. Likewise, they can be attacked with partial cover given to them.
Starker reacts by detonating a fireball before anyone moves. The ghouls all are blasted apart into ashes.
The item writhes in his hand when he regrabs it after casting his spell. Xymox hears a soft ‘click’ from the wall next to him. The outlined doorway pivots slightly away from him. There is a hallway beyond.

((The surprises with teeth are the least of your concerns.....))

Xymox will investigate the now open cell. Investigation 17

Investigate: 25
Starker to act
“Danger close!” Starker yells with glee.
Fireball centered on western edge of his own square, carving out all of The Company within range. (This will burn all the prisoners, I believe.)
damage (fire) = 31, halved on dc 16 saving throw
Starker stands his ground (!) not wanting to provoke an AoO.
