Chadwick moves the banner aside to reveal a lumpy stone wall. Nothing of note. Before he has an opportunity to say something, a trap door in the floor opens behind him. From this door bursts a collection of purple tentacles covered with suction cups. They all lash out at Kragen, Chadwick and Yartol. Were it not for that now familiar feeling of warning when danger appears they certainly would have surprised you. (( So, no surprise action for the tentacles and no Advantage on initiatives for The Company. ))
Chadwick’s second attack hits, for 28 total damage.
The tentacles then lash out at the three facing them.
Chadwick is missed.
Kragen is hit, Nat 20 for 28 bludgeoning damage, He succeeds his concentration save. He barely succeeds his STR save to avoid being knocked prone and pulled towards the tentacles.
Chadwick is then hit for 16 damage, to hit = 22. He fails his STR save and is prone and grappled, the tentacles draw him in towards them. He also fails his concentration save = 8. Hunter’s Mark now down.
Yartol is hit, to hit = 19 for 12 bludgeoning damage. He succeeds at his STR save. He succeeds at his concentration save = 12.
The other three hear sounds of combat and join the initiative.
The Company has prevailed against the lich Illiandil. There were some interesting observations during the fight. Illiandil attempted to cast spells that were failed to cast on multiple occasions. Clearly, the fight could have gone much worse. He was able to cast multiple spells each round as well has maintain concentration on more than one spell at a time. It is unclear if this was the effect of the pocket dimension you were transported to as the fight commenced or some other ability of his.
After his defeat, you returned to the library room where you found him. There are bookcases all around the room. All of them are overflowing with books, tomes, scrolls, and other collections of recorded information. There is a large desk in the room also with stacked tomes and books. An open tome is lying before the great iron chair where he was sitting. Many bottles of inks, quills, casting sand and other items are upon the desk. You also notice three polished hematite ovoid stones with a dwarven "X" engraved upon them. When you return, you see the iron crown he wore and green ring from his left hand that no longer glows with the sickly green aura it previously had. The Staff of the Void is leaning against the back of the chair. Your quest is achieved.
Kragen notices some irregularity with the wall and the sounds of rattling chains and moaning seeming to come from behind one of the book cases. The book case is moved to reveal a hidden door. Xymox's skeletal servant opens the door and a long hallway is seen beyond with what appear to be cells with iron bars and doors on each side. At the far end of the room, dominating the entire wall, is a massive demonic visage — horned, six-eyed, and grinning with a row of fanged teeth longer than daggers. Its six eyes burn with dull red light, and a faint heat wafts from its nostrils.
