No one recognizes the backpack as belonging to any of the captives. One man speaks up, “I saw the manticore fly in carrying a body four days, I think, before you arrived. It was wearing a bloodied backpack like that. The body was left at the longhouse and the giant carried it inside.”
Starker: “Perhaps before we leave we should investigate that game trail in the NW corner of the canyon. It may be a hidden path to someyhing of interest, or perhaps we will find clues about that observer we noticed when we first got to the area. Anyone interested in coming along?”

I’’m up for exploring. Is anyone in our group familiar with elven language? I am happy to wave and loudly announce in common our intentions of making this a safe and peaceful land once again.
The trail is steep in places, but easily found. It climbs up into the mountain side and branches. You spend most of a day walking around the perimeter of the canyon. It connects to the trail you found leading to the manticore's cave. That is getting quite foul at this point. You do not encounter anyone or any creatures on your walk this day. Near the end of the day you do see a group of wagons and carts making its way towards the gates. Hopefully, the expected relief party from Granitestead.
The dwarven baggage train arrives to the canyon. There are several wagons pulled by oxen teams as well as carts pulled by mules. Clothing, blankets, foodstuffs and casks of ale and brandy are among the supplies. In a short period of time there is a dwarven armed camp set up with a ring of tents. The captain of the advanced guard of ram cavalry is pleased to see his supplies arrive. He asks you over dinner that night, "When do you think we can return to Granitestead with this people?"
The captives have rallied after your liberation. Regular meals and water have done much to improve their condition and spirits. They are still weak, but now that you are looking at a ride back rather than a walk back they are probably ready.
Before we depart, Hoid will recruit Gneuman, with his excellent mobility, lack of armor, and magic belt of unknownness, to search the base of the waterfall and pool of water. Looking for things other than water, rocks, and other typical waterfall-type materials.

Gneuman jumps into the cold water of the pool. He starts to swim and cuts through the water with ease. His strokes move him quickly across the pool. The water is crystal clear and about 20’ deep. Gneuman easily swims to the bottom and looks around. Nothing unexpected is found. Several large trout are stirred up by his antics.

Curious about where the river exits the valley into the mountains to the south. Kragen investigates the area looking for signs of disturbance or anything unnatural.
The stream from the water fall's pool leads east and then turns south towards the mountainside. The stream is clear and clean. You can see trout swimming in the water. The bottom is visible and rocky. It varies from 2-3' deep to pools that are 10-12' deep. It enters a low cave mouth and disappears into the mountain. The water is 1-2' deep at this point and forms a low level rapids as it quickly rushes over the rocky bottom. You can hear what sounds like a waterfall from deeper within the cave.

(Is that before or after our first encounter with the manticore? I believe after, but math is no longer a core skill.)
That depends on the accuracy of day counting. It would be right around that time.

Yes. I was waiting for the appropriate time to say something. Now is the time.
Gneuman "I will accompany you."

No elvish in the party. Erbert the Quitter was the only one.

Starker speaks elvish. They insisted I learn it at the Academy.

Chadwick will ask the captain if he knew who the owners were of the estate before it got overrun.
He does not. There are many such settlements throughout the mountains. His guess is that these were humans based on the construction.

Carefully, I will enter the mouth of the cave and see if there is anything of interest.
(( Omitted from previous description…))
There are standing stones in an arc starting on each side of the stream’s edge and over the entrance of the cave mouth,
