Brief Backstory (Include how are you indebted to the Watchmaster): Vladrick's parents settled in Hupperdook a couple of years before Vladrick was born. The Lamplights refused to talk about their lives prior to coming to Hupperdook. Some suspect they had escaped from Xhorhas. Some say they came from Zadash. The two kept to themselves, had no friends, and never took part in the nightly celebrations. But Vladrick's father, Gump, was a good worker. He learned very quickly and became one of the best at working with the intricate internal mechanisms of the war machines. His wife, Wyndi, was skilled with an oven and made baked goods to sell. The stomachs of their neighbors always rumbled whenever they walked past the Lamplights' home.
The couple remained introverted, even after Vladrick was born. But as their son grew, it was impossible to keep him confined, and so Vladrick and his mother started joining the community while Gump was at work. Vladrick grew and grew and grew. By the time he was in his mid teens, he was a head taller than his own father. Then he began filling out. Vladrick was apprenticed to a blacksmith, a job that took advantage of his strength and wasn't impeded by his simple mind. In the evenings, he enjoyed working in the kitchen with his mother.
Despite his age, Vladrick continued to live with his parents well into his 20s. He worked and spent time with his parents, but he, like his parents, avoided the nightly celebrations, and so his social interactions were stunted. He was still well known around the city because of working in the blacksmith shop, and his father's reputation overshadowed their reluctance to socialize. But then Gump died. He was involved in a work-related accident and did not survive, leaving Vladrick to care for his mother. After the death of his father, Vladrick began "celebrating" as a way of dealing with his pain. This quickly led to alcoholism, violence, and getting in trouble with the Crownsguard. Through numerous interactions, the Watchmaster tried to help Vladrick keep out of trouble, even becoming a kind of uncle to him. Vladrick feels indebted to the Watchmaster and has successfully abstained from alcohol and stayed out of trouble for the past year and a half.
I lived in a fairly large town for most of my life. The area of town that I lived in was filled with other shifters like me. As a child, I heard the call of the wolf, and it shaped me. I began to feed into the wild within me. I would often be found in the woods and other wild places. My wolf nature made me naturally stealthy, and I spent a good amount of time learning to stalk my prey. As I grew, I found my place among my people. I felt like I belonged. I was fiercely protective of those I loved. But I didn't always love the right people.
In my late teens, I was distracted by my own thoughts and not paying attention. I found myself caught in a hunter's trap that I could not find my way out of. I honestly thought that I would die. Brehner, a man from my part of town who I knew by sight, but had never met, found me and released me from the trap. I was injured, so he spent a while caring for me. He talked softly to me as he cleaned and wrapped my wounds. We spent hours together, talking about life and hopes for the future. I could see it, then. I could see my future with him. My soul bonded with his soul in a way that I knew would forever change me. I kept my mouth shut, though. I knew that whatever was happening between us would happen in its own time and I was not going to force it. We returned to town together, albeit slowly, due to my injured leg. I kept glancing at him out of the corner of my eye. When we arrived home, our families came to greet us. A slender woman with lush brown fur bounded up and wrapped her arms around his neck. He kissed her fiercely and I swear I heard the sound of my heart breaking. That was it, then. He had a mate. He could never be mine.
For months, I attempted to forget the way that I felt. I kept largely to myself and spent an even greater amount of time in the woods. I avoided him as much as I could, but it was not always possible. He was well-loved and looked to as a leader, so he was always around. He was kind to me, the same way he had been that day in the woods, but all of his kindness just felt like salt in an open wound. His mate was always with him. She was beautiful and kind, and that hurt nearly as much. After close to a year, I could take it no longer. I couldn't sit around here pining over a man that I could not have. I was fully grown, and I had a grand sense of adventure and a desire to see more of what the world had to offer. Much to the chagrin of my parents, I said my goodbyes and headed off to find my purpose.
In my travels, I found my way to a secluded monastery where I could beg for a place to spend a few nights. To my great surprise and delight, I found that some of them were shifters, like me. It had been months since I had seen any of my own kind. I talked to them at length about their lives at the monastery and soon discovered that it was something that I wanted to be a part of as well. I hung up my gear and donned the monk's robes. It was years before I ventured out again. I loved living in the monastery, but the call of the wild, of adventure, was too strong for me to resist.
Shortly after leaving the monastery, I found myself in Hupperdook. I took up with the local monastery and decided to stay for a while. And I suppose it is because I was the new one, but the leaders of the monastery informed me that the Watchmaster would need favors every now and then, and it was going to be up to me to fulfill them. So much for the call of the adventure. I was sure this meant I'd be running menial errands for the foreseeable future.
Brief Backstory: Cal comes from a merchant family, but lacks the salesman's spirit. He always longed to help people, and embraced a personal philosophy of service, humility, and putting the needs of others ahead of oneself. Needless to say, he is the black sheep of the family, and they wanted him nowhere near their enterprises. So what to do with a boy like this but to ship him off to school. There he studied biology, nature, medicine, alchemy, herbalism, astrology, divination and took easily to the healing arts.
After graduating and becoming a doctor, he needed a sponsored medical internship, but the pickings were slim, and he never made the solid networking one needs to make to land the coveted positions throughout the kingdom. This began to look grim, if he couldn't find a sponsored position he might very well going back home to his family and somehow finding a role in import/exports, or whatever it is the family does. Salvation came at the eleventh hour, after already packing to head home, a response came to one of his enquiries, a one Bram Gulchswattle, the Watchmaster of Hupperdook has just such a spot for him! Cal packed his medical kits in his traveler's pack and set out to this Hupperdook, eager to begin his new career in field medicine, and forever in Bram's dept.

I'm probably laughing.
It is apparently so hard to program Aberrant Mind and Clockwork Soul spell-swapping into dndbeyond they had to remake the game without it rather than implement it.
Backstory: Young Moustini Blingdenschmidt has had a challenging life so far. Born in the poorest of conditions, he spent his early years living with a father who, while kind, was a horrible gambler and very often drunk. His mother died when he was too young to even remember her, which contributed both to his lack of upbringing and his father's deep depression. Still, his father Borten cared much for his "lil Mouse" and tried as he could to provide a home. But drinking lead to gambling, and gambling lead to debts that he could not pay. And this lead to Borten being imprisoned.
Spending most of his youth trying to fend for himself and his father, Mouse spend a lot of time sneaking around dark corners, occasionally stealing food or trinkets to survive. He always had a close affinity to animals, especially the small burrowing kinds that tend to hide in the dark corners of the tunnels. In particular, he has a friendly small mouse he keeps in his pocket and "talks" to in order to drive away the loneliness.
Getting caught up in a small graft, he pleaded his case to stay out of prison himself. Somehow, he caught the attention of the Watchmaster of Hupperdook, who secured both his release, and a promise to keep his father safe and relatively more comfortable than usual... if Mouse would be his eyes and ears on the streets/tunnels. The young gnome readily agreed, but probably never realized how deep this debt might go.
Thank you everyone for applying. It was a very hard decision, but I have chosen the players and they have responded. I will come back if someone drops from the adventure.
