Nathaniel slowly and carefully opens the lid, just a little bit at first, away from himself to avoid any powder or gas getting into his and Mr. Laine's faces.
Nathaniel slowly opens the tin of shoe polish and there is no release of a deadly poison or anything of the like. Inside you notice this shoe polish has been used extensively as there is not much left of the waxy polish. The odor from the tin seems different. I mixture of earthy polish and citric. No, the smell of lemons.
Under the lid of the tin, you see a compass rose etched into the lid. Instead of North, East, West, and south you see numbers 5931 You surmise the handiwork was not from the manufacturer.
"Hm, look at this, could it be a code key?"The pale tiefling says as he studies the inside of the lid, then showing the others still present in the small office.
Intelligence check to determine if it could be used as a code key for the code found: 13
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Nisha makes a mental note of the blueprint on the corkboard (how big is it?), then proceeds to move towards the bookcase. She takes a moment to look around and realise that Gavyn has disappeared and sighs heavily. Who knows where he's off to now.
"What is it?" She asks the tiefling as she walks by, glancing at the shoe polish lid in his hands for a moment, before turning her attention to the bookcase. She carefully examines the shelves of books, looking for any hidden traps, buttons, or patterns.

Aeran Dormaris - L2 Paladin on his way to Phandelver
It is quite large as seen in the image. The binders are full of numbers, but vague enough that Nisha is not sure what they represent. Payments? debts? loans? number of smuggled goods?
Nathaniel figures it's a key, but when trying to decipher the documents its incomplete. Where a lot of it is still gibberish. There is another part you are missing.
To reiterate the lemon scent should not be there in that brand of shoe polish.
"This is hopeless..., " Nisha leaves the binders alone, instead going back to the desk. She takes the cup of coffee and carefully sniff it, then starts checking out the drawers for something interesting.

//do we need to roll for perception at the same as investigation or just investigation is enough
He looks around for anything else but comes up blank, and frowns at the still gibberish translation. Spies were always figuring out unique ways of hiding their messages after all.
The tortle's vision swims a bit at this height but he attempts to find footing and look for signs that someone has come this way before him recently.

If there is no sign that Eban Hall went this way, he will sigh and return to the office. "Well, he didn't go out the kitchen, the front door, or the roof. Not a lot of other obvious ways he could have gone unless he is still in the building somewhere."
"I suppose we do not know for certain he was here when we arrived, or were we?" The pale tiefling answers Gavyn, then nodding to Laine, moving over to the documents and using his finger to put some on the text, hoping it would reveal or clarify something.
(And falls out of the window? Did Gavyn just dunkenly defenestrate himself?)
Laine peers over Nathaniel's shoulder as he goes to open the tin.
Gavyn falls from the second-floor window. He takes 4 bludgeoning damage as he slams into the alley.
A cook opens the back door and seeing the same tortle he goes back in and closes the door shaking his head.
Nathaniel slowly and carefully opens the lid, just a little bit at first, away from himself to avoid any powder or gas getting into his and Mr. Laine's faces.
Gavyn fortunately landed on his shield-covered shell but it still hurt. Dusting himself off, he attempts the climb again.

Gavyn is able to climb up onto the roof though it's hard to find his footing as the roof is sloped with an artistic architectural flair.

"Try putting the polish on the document?"

(The coffee was explicitly described as still hot, so someone was.)
There are no signs that anyone has been on the sloped roof. Most likely Ebar Hall left through the kitchen and into the night.
The polish stains the document, but nothing is revealed.
Hint: Where else have you seen a compass rose?
