As they reach the second floor, Nathaniel quickly checks Miriam's body for the book she was clutching to her chest earlier. "Our elusive information broker no doubt." He says as he sees the smartly dressed gnome, quickly checking the man's pockets, nodding to Kaelen as the massive minotaur starts to revive the gnome. As the roiling drakness moves closer, the pale tiefling throws the enlightened coin closer to it, hoping something would be revealed, keeping his distance to it, looking over at his associates to see if this was a time for fight or flight.
As the group heads upstairs, Nisha lags behind a bit, ensuring they have taken the collar, but making sure not to touch it. She follows after the others, making a mental note of the state of the stairs, the marks and the melted railings. After their encounter with the wolf-like monster, she becomes suspicious of whether the damage here is caused by the same creature. From her recollection, the half-werewolf or whatever it was, used only physical attacks against them. Surely if it had the ability to melt metal, it would have used it against the group. So the only logical conclusion of this is that there had been another creature here. The question is whether it's still in the building at this very moment or not.
The sight on the upper floor is grim. Her golden eyes survey the area, focusing on the two gnomes - one dead, lying in a pool of blood, which must be Miriam as per Nathaniel's words earlier, and the other... the other is on his way to join her. As if reading her mind, Kaelen steps into action, and Nisha looks around, while waiting to see if the gnome man is going to live or not. Perhaps he can tell them what happened.
She doesn't hear the warning in the gnome voice, but the hurried steps of the minotaur rushing back to their group and a very ominous clink of metal make her skin crawl, and the half-elf switches her attention to the dark cloud spreading in the room. It is strangely unnerving that the shadows, normally her most loyal allies, now crawl towards them.
"There is something there... a door? Distract it maybe," the rogue says unsurely.
Nisha's lips press into a thin line, as she steps back, trying to conceive herself (Stealth: 20), before attempting to creep a bit closer so she can investigate further (Investigation: 11), but still maintaining her distance from the eerie dark cloud.

Kaelen looks at the gnome as Nisha speaks about distracting the darkness creature "Are you sure my friend? If this is the information broker surely his life is worth the piece of information of who has been buying the plans and why. No need to risk your life for more information is there?" he turns to see her gone and sighs "I guess we distract it then. Who wants to stay back with our friend here?"
"Nasha, don't go into the darkness." Laine says as she moves forward, but its obvious the half-elf has her own ideas. He sighs, conjuring another flame into his hands. "We distract it then. Is that guy good to move?"
Gavyn sees Miriam but does nothing this time, just staring at her dead form blankly. His eyes eventually lift to see the roiling darkness. "I don't...understand,"he says.
As Nasha darts past him, the tortle is startled into action and raises his shield and battleaxe.
"Is this a thing we can even fight? It...it just swallowed that coin."
Something is nagging Gavyn about the gnome with the missing hand, though. An unanswered question...a mystery resides there. He points at the injured gnome.
"That looks like a clean cut. Does this...thing...do that kind of damage? It wasn't the wolf-person, you see,"Gavyn says in a flurry of words. "No, some person must have cut his hand off. But why?"
"I suggest we make it out of here now, I think I can get to that room from the outside."The pale tiefling says to the others, starting to fall back towards the stairs. "The important thing is we get that gnome somewhere we can have a little talk about his business here."
As Nisha moves closer, she senses baleful eyes watching her. Clink and another metalic sound as if some metal thing is shifting. The shadow tendrils creeping along the floor turns slowly towards Nisha. Whatever this thing is it is content toying with its prey.
She cannot see anything in that roiling darkness. The door is intact.
With every step bringing her closer to the dark cloud, Nisha's instincts scream danger louder and louder. The metallic sounds and the slow, deliberate movements of the shadows make her heart race, but that is nothing compared to the dread that washes her as she gets the feeling of something watching her from inside the dark cloud. The hair on her neck stand on end as she sees with her own eyes how the dark tendrils begin to swift and move towards her.
How does this thing know that she is here? What is actually watching her?
Her mind races back to the still-breathing gnome they found in here. A clean-cut arm. A dark cloud making clinking noises. If there is a connection here, on seconds thoughts, she doesn't really want to explore it further.
Considering there is nothing that she can see, no matter how hard she tries, the half-elf decides it is best to retrace her steps, distancing herself from the creeping darkness.

The party heads back down and out of the bookstore. There are some curious bystanders who look in to see if there is some kind of burglary. The shadow creature does not follow for now.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
If possible, Nathaniel would fly up by the window to the room they didn't enter and peek inside. If necessary to do so unnoticed by any bystanders in sight he would cause a distraction with the magic of his talisman.

Kaelen will pick up the gnome and bring him down the stairs "I am with Gavyn, might be good to retreat to our benefactor with this one and let the guard deal with this."
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Gavyn is a bit surly as he approaches the bystanders. He hasn't fully processed the deaths of Miriam and Dartwick. "Did you see anyone here tonight, other than us, you see, who might have looked out of place?" Gavyn says, tears welling. "Did you see something and just ignore it, maybe?"
He grills the bystanders for clues as to what happened before he and his comrades arrived. In part, he expects he will also be a distraction from them watching anything his comrades do.
Through some minor illusion and stealth Nathaniel flies up to see a small breakroom and on the floor is a crumpled pile of skin. It's as if someone shed a thin layer of skin from head to toe similar to snakes. There is even hair still attached to the skin. On the kitchenette counter is a notebook with a torn page. The window is closed.
One of the bystanders speak up a woman walking her dog "Who are you? I will not answer anything unless you are a city guard, you don't look like a city guard. For all we know you could be burglars" the other bystanders murmur similarly.

Laine takes a long look at the creeping darkness, trying to discern if it is magical in nature.

Detect magic is still up.
Lain sees an aura of evocation.
"What the hell.." he mutters, and then steps back slightly. "We don't want to go into that."

"As you say, we'll try from the outside then." he says back to Nathaniel. His hand closes, the fire being smothered in his hand.
"I...uh...I recommend a tactical retreat," Gavyn says and backs out of the room, shield raised.
