There was some kind if intelligence there. Anthony genuinely felt bad for the thing, just trying to be an eyeball monster. Not bad enough to try to draw its attention and let it chew on his arm but enough to let it be, and he would totally toss it a fresh corpse if he had one he wasn't using.
He would stay ready for anything, but keep still and quiet until it was safe or fighting wasn't a choice.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Aoufie moves away from his siblings circling in a clockwise manner 30 ft to another bit of cover by a building. He decides to speak to the monster using minor illusion to send his voice 30 ft towards the monster as to not reveal his real location. The message is "What is it that you seek this day? Is it food? If so, what kind of food do you seek?" It is sent in a loud speaking voice as to draw its attention.
Ming lets out a quiet sigh of relief when the creature doesn't try to eat any of the people it pulled out from the building. She did flinch a little when it slammed that one guy into the ground, but at least it didn't eat him. However, she gives Aoufie a horrified look when he projects his voice towards the beast, unsure of what his goal with that is... She glances between the rabbit-man, Anthony, and Kora, trying to figure out what the heck they are trying to do. At least Kora seems surprised, that means Ming isn't the only one unsure of what Aoufie is doing.
"I... think its trying to find someone like us to eat... you know... someone who's awake," she whispers quietly but urgently. "We should get away while we still can." Then she hesitantly peers around the building again to watch and see what happens.
The beast jolts in surprise at hearing the voice. It rolls its body to look towards where Aoufie’s voice projected, and it seems confused to see nobody there. Now that Aoufie’s closer, he sees that many smaller eyes ring its long tentacles, but none of them seem to notice his stealthy approach.
The creatures rolls over again, flattening another bench as it looks around to find whoever spoke to it. It growls a deep, throaty growl, but you can’t tell if that’s just the sound it makes or if it’s ready to attack. Maybe it can’t talk?
Aoufie shakes his head and retreats back to his siblings and gestures to move away from this area. "I thought it may be a distant cousin to beholders who are intelligent. I apologize for questioning it. Perhaps we should leave this place and seeker a better place to discuss what we do next" he whispers.
Kora puts a hand on Aoufie's shoulder, glad that he is alright. "Yes, let's keep moving, see if we can find an opening in that giant wall beyond there."
Anthony is noisy enough with clattering metal and shuffling steps. He doesn't want to risk giving them away by speaking, but he shakes his head and smiles at Aoufie's guts. Though he does take note that the creature, friendly or not, seems just as miserable here as the people it wants to eat. That's something to keep in mind if they find something to barter with..
Might be worth trying to speak to that dryad at some point... After they find the way out, maybe.
He nods to the others ready to follow and keep himself between them and the creature, trusting Akyan or Kora to scout ahead of them.
Akyan grimaces when the creature slams the unconscious man onto the cobbled street. He gives Aoufie a shocked look when the rabbitfolk sneaks forward to attempt a conversation, and lets out a small huff of relief when he returns safely. He nods to Kora when she mentions moving on and glances at the others and back to the druid, "Kora, Ming, start heading in whichever direction you think the mist wall would be in, everyone else follow as quickly and quietly as you can. I'll take up the rear and make sure that thing doesn't follow us." He gestures to the creature, "If it notices us I'll try to lure it away. I do still have a link with Kora and Anthony so we won't lose contact."
He knows Anthony would prefer to be the human shield, but with that leg of his there would be no way he'd be able to make a quick escape. He meets Anthony's gaze, "I won't be far behind."
The big man grimaces, but trusts that Akyan is fast enough. "Alright..Just. Stay safe, but I guess that goes without saying." Falling in line with the others.
Ming lets out another small sigh of relief, and nods when Akyan says to lead the way. Quickly and quietly she does just that, wishing she hadn't been so hasty in summoning her glaive.
Backtracking a ways, you easily find another route to the city wall that didn't involve meeting a gigantic eyeball monster. That was quite the odd encounter, but there must be a reason that it's there; you doubt that Tsien Chiang would let a monster like that roam around her city unless it had something to do with her dream of building the perfect I'Cath.
About 15 minutes later, you make it to the city wall. It looms nearly forty feet into the air, and its broad shadow bathes the closest buildings in a veil of darkness. You see refuse and other detritus laying discarded at the base of the wall, though you don't spot easy way up to the top unless you were an excellent climber that could walk on walls like a spider could. If only...
The drow nods to Anthony as the group starts to move out. True to his word, He only stays behind long enough for the others to get a decent head start, and to confirm that the thing hasn't been alerted to their presence and won't be following them.
Once the group reaches the wall, he stops and looks at it for a moment. Even if Kora could become a spider again, that wouldn't help the rest of them. They need to find an easier way out of this place. "Should we walk the perimeter? If there's no gate, then we'll have to build a ladder or something to get up there."
He 's not surprised, but it sucks. "Does the gate move or is it just difficult to find?" he asks Ming. "Based on how this place is laid out, I would guess south, but it's not a normal city, so, that might be irrelevant." Maybe someone had made another way. Something hidden for smuggling...the people here didn't seem like they had the wherewithal to set up smuggling rings, but there must be some kind of organized resistance right, however small. There always is, but Ming probably would have mentioned that kind of thing.
"I... don't know," Ming says in answer. "I just know that very few people know where it is." She looks up at the wall, considering Akyan's idea of walking the perimeter. She'd never considered that, mostly because of how long it would take. She also hadn't considered building a ladder, just because well, she really hasn't had much time since waking up. Not to mention the fact that she hadn't put too much thought into getting out of the city since her family is still here.
"My vote is follow the wall south, but I don't have a lot to base that on." he regarded Ming, it must be an uncomfortable feeling-no, he knew it was because he'd been there- to realize you'd been stuck in a prison without trying to get free. At least she hadn't put herself in hers.
"You know, there were a lot of people walking about in the Dream, should we ask one of them? Or would it be different there than here? Though I wouldn't think so?" Kora scrunches up her face trying to figure things out. "And as for the wall, I could become a giant spider, carry a rope up there with me to assist you all over. That would work if we were just leaving... if we were being chased? Not so much."
"Kora that would indeed be helpful, but that monster with the big eye was surely acting strange. If it was a mindless monster than I expected it to be eating all those sleeping people. I am not sure it was trying to find someone who is awake. I wish there was a way to communicate with it without endangering us." says Aoufie.
