Aeleth decides to cast the Mage Armor spell to improve his Armor Class before joining Lola in melee combat. He wants to be as prepared as possible for the fight ahead.
He casts the spell with a flick of his wrist, and a shimmering aura of magical protection surrounds him. He feels a surge of confidence as he knows he is now better equipped to face the Redbrands.
He then joins Lola, drawing his shortsword and dagger. He knows that the Redbrands will likely charge at them, so he wants to be ready to defend himself and counterattack.
With Lola at his side, Aeleth waits for the Redbrands to make their move.
Greasy Hair Redbrand is shocked by Aeleth's audacity and unnerved by the fact that he saw him cast a spell... "Be careful, he's a wizard! Like Glassstaff!" he shouts to the two friends behind.
"All the more reason to take him out quickly, idiot!" Disfigured Redbrand shouts, who is immediately behind him "Let me pass and I'll show you how to do it..."
Sildar approaches, with a menacing look, the edge of the cistern, taking aim with his Heavy Crossbow and says, addressing Disfigured Redbrand: "Oh, do you have really such bad intents? Take this and think twice!" and pulls the trigger.
Unfortunately, the bolt hits the leather of Disfigured Redbrand's armor at an unfortunate angle and is deflected, leaving only a nasty scratch in the leather... but none on the villain's skin.
More determined than ever, Disfigured Redbrand takes Greasy Hair Redbrand's place, ahead of Lola and Aeleth, while Greasy Redbrand stands back, unsure of what to do.
“Climb the barrels and stab that mulatto woman!” Scarred Redbrand then orders him. And while Greasy Hair Redbrand actually tries to climb the barrels to the north to get into position to attack Lola, Scarred Redbrand pushes him from behind to try to make him do it faster.
Yes, Aeleth casts the Shield spell as a reaction. He knows that he cannot afford to be caught off guard in this fight. He needs to be able to protect himself from the Redbrands' attacks.
The Shield spell surrounds Aeleth with a shimmering magical barrier that raises his Armor Class by 5. This means that Disfigured Redbrand's attack will now miss. Aeleth feels a surge of relief as he blocks the attack.
"Damned wizard!" curses Disfigured Redbrand, when an invisible force blocks the thrust that he had managed to prepare with such care "This is cheating!"
"This is just magical superiority!" Merric sneers, shooting an arrow at Disfigured Redbrand "If you're too stupid to learn magic, it's all your fault!"
Unfortunately for the halfling, Disfigured Redbrand turns, enraged, to see who has spoken and in doing so slightly changes the position of his head... just enough for the arrow to miss, passing very close to his left ear.
Torrga then utters a sacred invocation in Dwarven, in response to which a flame-like radiance descends on Greasy Hair Redbrand, while he is struggling to balance himself on the barrel.
The flame-like light envelops the bandit, who writhes in pain as if he were burning... and in fact, when the light goes out, burn marks remain on the victim's arms!
Lola finally brings her Greataxe to strike in a wide circular motion, aiming for Disfigured Redbrand's neck and commanding him: "Leave Aeleth alone, you scoundrel!"
This time it's Disfigured Redbrand's turn to be surprised... Aeleth's speed and agility leave him no escape, as the two steel blades pierce him in two places simultaneously, the Shortsword on the thigh and the Dagger on the upper arms. The bandit collapses moaning, in a pool of his own blood...
Sildar immediately drops his Heavy Crossbow, steps forward (trampling on the dying bandit without too many scruples) while drawing his Longsword and begins to attack the legs of Greasy Hair Redbrand, balanced on the barrels.
The gray-haired warrior proves to be effective and ruthless, cutting off the right leg of the unfortunate criminal Greasy Hair Redbrand in two blows, falling from the barrels screaming in an inhuman way and breaking his head on the floor, dying.
Scarred Redbrand, left alone and seeing his two companions on the ground, just in front of him, covered in their own blood, visibly pales and drops his Shortsword to the ground, saying: "Okay! I changed my mind! You can go wherever you want! Plus, I can even reveal you where there is a secret door! Just let me live!" he drops to his knees "Please, let me go away! You'll never hear anything from me again!"
“What do you think, Aeleth?” raises an eyebrow, doubtful, Lola "Let him live is fine by me... but in my opinion we should imprison him, not let him free... he's still a criminal who wouldn't have hesitated to kill us! Who tells us he won't start crime again as soon as he arrives in another town?"
Aeleth looks down at Scarred Redbrand, his face grim. He knows that Lola is right - Scarred Redbrand is a dangerous criminal who should not be allowed to roam free. However, he also feels a pang of pity for the man. He is clearly terrified, and he is begging for his life.
Aeleth thinks for a moment. He decides that he will not kill Scarred Redbrand, but he will not let him go free either. He will imprison him, and he will make sure that he is punished for his crimes.
"Very well," Aeleth says, "we will imprison you. But know that you will pay for your crimes."
Having decided to imprison Scarred Redbrand, Lola takes her own rope from her backpack, cuts a length of it to the right length, and ties the man to his wrists and ankles.
Meanwhile, Sildar searches both the prisoner and the two dead brigands and finds some coins on them: 12 gp,15 ep, 28 sp and two garnets whose value is estimated by Torrga's expert eye at 10 gp each. Sildar divides the treasure found so far (in the cistern and on the Redbrands) among everyone, so everyone receives a total of 18 gp, 4 sp, 1 ep and 1sp.
Merric instead questions Scarred Redbrand, holding the blade of his shortsowrd menacingly close to him: "You were speaking of something interesting, before: a secret door... Tell us where it is and how it opens".
The prisoner swallows, uncomfortable with the halfling's threatening attitude and replies: "Exactly in the southwest corner of the room... Since it is made of stone and blend in with the surrounding walls, it is not easy to see it, but if you try if you push that section of wall, the door will swing open on hidden iron hinges. It is not locked. Just try and see".
Torrga, who is closest to her, goes to try... and indeed she finds the secret door and manages to open it without difficulty, just as the prisoner had said. Beyond the secret door, there is a corridor just 5' wide that continues west for 25', then turns sharply north. "We can only advance in single file..." she realizes.
"I will remain first, in front of everyone" Sildar offers. "If we encounter enemies, they will have to fight me before they can reach you".
"But the prisoner..." Merric has a doubt "shall we leave him like this? Simply tied up? Perhaps we would do better to hide him somewhere... At least, if other Redbrands arrive, they won't see him! What do you say, Aeleth?"
