"If you seek the counsel of the dragon Cynurrarth, it would be wise to provide the dragon a gift of lore. Our party is an eclectic group, with skills, talents, and stories that may gain the favor of the dragon. If we could accompany Ruby, we may explain ourselves better and seek the dragon's council. Or do you expect the dragon will visit here? We can help prepare to host...if you could point where you think it'll land..."
(OOC: This was meant for the Great Wyrm; I assume anyone who unable to go could go reconnaissance or gain intel from the tribe where to find the drow crypts)
Hildegard nods, and stands up. "Let me take Perdita over to the docks, then, and speak to Ruby.
Hewelathan glances at Jodie as Hildegard departs, wondering how the two women will sort out their different approaches to dealing with strangers. As the group waits, he looks a bit nervous, given Hildegard's words with Zolgu. He's happy to hear that Hildegard didn't encounter (or cause) any problems, and the news that the kobolds plan to consult the dragon does not surprise him.
"deep dragons....you can barter with them with knowledge."
As the discussion about the dragon continues, Hewelathan says, "Unfortunately, most of our interesting knowledge closely relates to our Quest and the items we carry. I assume that deep dragons, like all dragons, are interested in increasing their treasure hoard. We should be careful not to let Cynurrarth know (or even guess) that we possess rare and powerful magical items. Despite their power, I doubt that we'd last long if the dragon decided to take them for himself and attacked us."
Thinking about what they've learned since meeting in the Temple of Ilmater a few weeks ago, Hewelathan says, "We'd also have to be careful about what we reveal to Cynurrarth. What of our knowledge and lore could we share without endangering our quest or those who have helped us? Even just our trip here to the Underdark! The dragon may be aware of the blade that lies in the priestess's tomb and guess that it's what we seek. And who knows what the lore is told among dragons about the Dragon Lord Sserrah Nightbane? I'm not confident that we'd find all dragons opposing the goal of Firion's cult to restore Sserrah."
If the group is willing to entertain the proposal, Jodie asks Hewelathan for guidance in persuading the Great Wrym
(OOC: Can we even find Zolgu?)
Hewelathan is willing to go with Jodie to provide guidance. The spell is a fairly weak divination and only provides insight for a minute. Since they don't know where Zolgu went once Nickeline lost track of him and started to follow Ruby, he would need to be be with Jodie when she finds the Great Wyrm so that he could cast the spell just before she talks to him. Or they'd need to get the Great Wyrm to come back here to the party.
Hewelathan says, "We know what Ruby is doing. I'd love to know what Zolgu is doing. It sounds like Hildegard is honor-bound to stay in the kobolds' village until Ruby returns. Nickeline might be able to scry on Ruby in her conversation with Cynurrarth, but that conversation will almost certainly be in draconic. I definitely don't want to tangle wits with a dragon if we can avoid it, not with so little information about the dragon and what it might want. But perhaps we can get close enough without being discovered by the dragon to overhear their conversation?"
Hewelathan would have to give up his attempt at a short rest, but the basic idea is that he (and perhaps Jodie and/or Korba) could try to get past the kobolds and down to the lake. Hewelathan could cast pass without trace and use it to try to follow Ruby without being detected by the kobolds or the dragon. He's not sure whether they'll be able to get close enough to hear the conversation with the dragon, but if the others think that it's worth the risk, he's willing to try.
Hewelathan's only other idea, if they don't want to spy on the dragon or betray Ruby, would be for someone to intimidate or charm another kobold. Maybe not Zolgu or Ruby, but any kobold who might know enough to tell them something about this village, the dragon, how to get to the drow city, etc. Anything that would give them some leverage or another option other than blindly following the Orb of Direction through the Underdark.
"It might be best to let the kobolds deal with their own,"Hildegard says. "I don't know much of dragons. Perhaps they'd be willing to let Tamphalic accompany Ruby and the other kobolds to see Cynurrarth. Without making too much of an impression, good or bad, he won't seem so out of place to the dragon, and he could be our spokesman there."
If Jodie has gone out to look for Zolgu, Hildegard stays behind this time, listening with growing worry to the discussions on dragons and what they like and what provokes them. "We await the dragon's judgment as much as the kobolds do, at this point. I don't know what we can do to positively influence that judgment, it is not sounding very safe. Dragons seem to be rather dangerous creatures." But Hildegard seems, as Hewelathan guessed, reluctant to endorse any plan that involves sneaking off, tricking, or charming anyone. "While we're waiting, it might not hurt to strike up a conversation with some of these guards, would it?"
Tamphalic would be fine with going with Ruby and the Kobolds, but is not sure it is a wise idea to be with the dragon on his own. Especially with how he dealt with the ancient blue dragon back home, him going with only some kobolds to another dragons lair feels wrong somehow.
"Ruby has been honest with us for now, maybe we should just let her do what she was ordered to do and we will hear afterwards what the dragon said."

Regarding finding Zolgu... it turns out to be a bit of a challenge. If you ask the warriors (or others around the town) where he is, it seems that he is going to the Cave of the Ancestors after all... he just wanted to make sure that patrols were out in full-force and Ruby was on her way to meet the dragon before he left. As to why he would feel the need to both consult the ancestors and the dragon is anyone's guess.
But eventually, Jodie does find him, as he prepares to enter an ominous cave...
"What do you still desire, outsider?" the Great Wyrm asks when he sees her.
After Jodie's explanation, though, he seems quite suspicious.
"You wish to go with Ruby to see the Great and Mighty Cynurrarth?" he asks incredulously. "Not many topsiders would make such a request... I thought you might try to run if you knew that we wished to consult the Master himself. You surprise me again. Still... what assurance do I have that you would not simply overpower Ruby and the warriors and use this opportunity to run away?"

"You don't have to ask me twice; I will stay behind as well," says Nickeline. "I'll be watching you and staying in close contact until you get back. If the dragon should want knowledge that Korba or I can provide, I will relay it to one of you who is there."

As it turns out, the Kobolds have a rather ingenious system for traversing at least some parts of the ancient city. It turns out many of the streets have been dug out into canals through which the kobolds are able to sail their boats. Which is convenient as it cuts the travel time... unfortunately, that also means that you find yourselves at the mouth of the dragon's lair in what feels like an incredibly short time...

My companions Tamphalic, Hewelathan, and I come to ask your permission to travel through your realm and explore the ruins of the dark elf city. Is it true deep dragons value lore and knowledge over all else? I or Tamphalic would barter lore for favor to travel with the kobolds' guidance. We met Ruby here and the Great Wrym already."
Jodie gives Ruby a reassuring hug and gestures warmly to her companions. Persuasion- 18

Hewelathan gasps in awe at the sight of the huge dragon before them. For a moment, there's nothing he can do but stare in fascination at the dragon. When Jodie nudges him, he blinks and looks around as though he just woke from a deep sleep. Hewelathan leans close and touches Jodie's arm as he calls on the cunning of the fox and the wisdom of the ancient, deep-rooted trees to guide her to the right words or argument for persuading Cynurrarth. If nothing else, Hewelathan hopes that she convinces the dragon just to leave them alone. If they angered Cynurrarth, he's not even sure whether they could escape, much less defeat the dragon.
Tamphalic looks impressed at the dragon before them. Taking it in, its size, its color and everything he can else he can see. After that he listens to Jodie's words while looking around the place to see what lies around in there.
(Wondering if he can decide from what he read if it is indeed a deep dragon, and what its age is (adult/ancient etc))

Jodie is mindful to move and act casual, making mental notes of the details of dragon's library layer. (passive Perception17)
Jodie continues her offer, "I don't suppose you hear many songs down here. Would you agree, music is a kind of lore? Energy expressed in patterns, when known, resonate as a collective force greater than their parts. I think knowledge is the same, for ideas without action wither in the mind. To be a true seeker of knowledge, you must learn to dance with Death. And so we must travel to where the dead persist."
As far as Temphalic can tell, it is a genuine adult deep dragon, though this particular specimen does have a much a smoother and more lustrous appearance than is apparently common for the species (OOC: the picture is the 4e illustration of a deep dragon)
Jodie:
The library looks like it is incredibly ancient, and probably was even before the city's destruction. But the books which it contains look like they range from crumbling ancient scrolls all the way up to brand-new tomes. It seems likely that this dragon has some way of trading with the outside world if it was able to get these new tomes. There are a few kobolds that appear to be acting as 'librarians' already in the lair when you arrive, though most of them scurried away as soon as they caught sight of three outsiders.
The dragon regards those who have entered its lair dispassionately for a moment. Then it slowly lowers its head to get a closer look at you all. Its scaly features are hard to read... but you could swear that he smiled when Jodie began to sing. And perhaps an even better indication of his pleasure, the great Cynnurrarth does not speak until she is finished. When she does, the dragon speaks at last in a voice like distant thunder.
"It has been many years since a Bard has passed through these ruins,"he says. "Especially one as talented as yourself. Perhaps I should keep you here in my hoard..."
It is difficult to tell whether the dragon is speaking in jest or if it is being entirely serious. But it does not linger too long on that idea.
"Tell me why you wish to pass through these ruins,"the dragon says after a moment. "And then I shall decide a worthy price for passage through this realm."
Jodie is pleased by the dragon's initial reception and 'smile'. Though Jodie realizes the seriousness of the encounter after "...I should keep you here in my hoard..." The image of a caged songbird lingers, so she is careful when choosing her words.
'Dance with Death' I said, one last request. A debt to repay, a soul put to rest. Ancient lovers entangle, betrayed in life. No rest in death, only time and strife. I best not say too much, keep you asking for more. The pursuit is a joy, knowing sometimes a bore. No better patron, could I find, if tomes are your prize. I'll salvage in our exploration or provide an oration.

(passive Perception 17)
Jodie plays a haunting tune on her firestorm lute and as spins and dances about with great dexterity. Performance- 21

"It has been many years since a Bard has passed through these ruins," he says. "Especially one as talented as yourself. Perhaps I should keep you here in my hoard..."
It is difficult to tell whether the dragon is speaking in jest or if it is being entirely serious. But it does not linger too long on that idea.
"Tell me why you wish to pass through these ruins," the dragon says after a moment. "And then I shall decide a worthy price for passage through this realm."
Unhappy that the market got rid of individual purchases for one-off subclasses, magic items, and monsters?
