Skanon nodded his head in response to the second guard's bow. Then he glanced at the first one for a moment, taking in his actions in an unjudging manner.
"You need not apologize for your friend's crude actions, you would be surprised by just how many have strayed from the light. I may not be as strong as I once was but your festival is a kind gesture and I truly am honored to attend. I must admit that it takes a lot out of me to manifest myself in my current state but I will make myself known when the time is right." He takes a breath before continuing. " My mortal vessel may not be run down just yet but I will see to it that he rests up.Thank you my child, may the light guide you even in your darkest moments."
As he walks through the gate his eyes slowly go back to their normal grey hue. Even though he kept up the composed and dignified act on the outside, internally he was panicking a little. It had been years since he'd done something like that but this time it had been slightly more effective than the first time he'd done it.
{DM Note: Skanon can join the group at the Blue Water Inn whenever he is ready.}
For Skanon:
Entering Vallaki from the North, you passed the crumbling mansion. The house seemed disgusted with itself, a slouching roof hung heavy over furrowed gables, and moss-covered walls sagged and bulged under the weight of the vegetation. As you studied the house’s sullen countenance, you heard the house actually groan in self-hatred at what it had become.
For Everyone else:
You entered the inn through double doors. Heavy wooden beams propped against the inside wall stood ready to be thrown into steel brackets at a moment’s notice, barring the door from intrusion. Damp cloaks hung from pegs in the entrance portico. The tavern was packed with tables and chairs with narrow paths meandering between them. A bar stretched along the far wall, under a balcony that could be reached by a wooden staircase that hugged the right wall. Another balcony overhung the doorway from which you entered. The windows were all fitted with heavy shutters and iron crossbars. Lanterns hanging above the bar and resting on tables were all unlit, the inn was bathed in the dim noonday light filtering through the windows. The walls were adorned in a multitude of wolf heads mounted on wooden plaques.
A severe middle-aged lady tended the bar. She wore a black and white long-sleeved dress and wore her raven hair with prominent white streaks in a bun decorated with black feathers. Two young boys, spitting images of the older lady behind the bar, brought drinks to a pair of loud drunkards at a corner table. The three sweaty workmen you had seen enter the inn before you sat at a table of their own and talked quietly amongst themselves without any drinks. The final character in the inn’s taproom was a white-haired half-elf man in a bright red, gold-threaded cut-off jacket with polished golden buttons. His ensemble of frilled white undershirt, brown hose and shiny black boots with oversized buckles made him stick out like a sore thumb. He was making exaggerated sounds of enjoyment as he dug into a very lean steak and smacked his lips as if it were the best thing he’d ever eaten.
The woman behind the bar gave your party a welcoming smile and her wrinkles woved their well-worn paths around her face. “Welcome to the Blue Water Inn travelers, I'm Danika Martikov and those are my sons." She pointed at the two boys serving drinks. "Go on boys, greet our guests like I taught you."
"Welcome! I'm Brom. How may we serve you?" said the first boy.
"And I'm Bray," said the second boy, "would you like some wolf steaks and drinks?”
Ireena and Ismark nodded in Garavon’s direction and led the children you rescued to the indicated table as if nothing were amiss.
As Skanon takes in the house's appearance he raised a brow slightly in response to the sound that it had made. He took a mental note of both the sound and appearance, wondering if it was one of the locations that had been mentioned in the reading. He would certainly bring it up with the others just in case they wanted to look into it later, then he continues on his way to the Blue Water Inn.
'I hope that they managed to gain entry without any troubles.'
"Wolf steaks? Wolf ste-" Vicky cuts herself off before getting to a point where she doesn't understand these people. Vicky may not be scared of Strahd, but killing his eyes and ears of the realm disgusted her: she wanted nothing to do with this place. "Are there any other meats on the menu? If there are, pick it at random, and if you land on a steak, I'll have it more than well-done, it's tough for the teeth. And I'll have a slice of toast with it if you don't mind as well as some wine. Don't believe you'd have anything better." Vicky goes outside, grabs a handful of pebbles, and sits down next to the children with the pebbles and casts Mould Earth, moving them around and turning them into random shapes. "I'm Vicky, it's nice to meet you!" Vicky continues to engage in conversation with the children until the food arrives or until another person talks to Vicky.

Look what you've done, spoiling it for you and everyone who can see this screen. You're a disgrace, you know that, right? You have nothing to be ashamed of but yourself, you moster!
But to be completely fair, every monster has a cute side, like have you seen people draw goblins? Goblins look so cool! You're fine, you may seem like a monster, but I bet you're cute on the inside!
Vicky exited the inn with Freek and Myrtle, the children you rescued. Brom and Bray, the barkeep’s sons, were about to dash out to join Vicky, excited at the prospect of new friends, but were firmly admonished by their mother. “Boys! We have work to do. Serve these guests first, you can go play afterwards.”
“Yes mother,” they chorused, scampering back to the bar to retrieve Vicky’s drink.
Danika opened a door by the side of the bar and shouted into it, the warm glow of a kitchen fire could be seen from within. “One wolf steak, extra rare and one chef’s surprise.”
“What in the devil’s name is a chef’s surprise?” came the reply. The voice sounded like an older man.
“It means put whatever you want on a plate as long as it’s not a wolf steak,” said Danika.
While Veronica stood about and waited for her steak, Brom and Bray grabbed Vicky’s drink that their mother had prepared off the bar and ran out the front door to find Vicky.
“Here’s your wine ma’am!” said Brom as he proffered the glass to Vicky, “I’m Brom.” He returned Vicky’s greeting while watching the shapes form from Mould Earth.
“And I’m Bray,” said the second boy, entranced by the random shapes formed by the shifting stones, “that looks like a butt!” He fell over laughing at his own joke.
“Where’d you learn to do that ma’am?” asked Brom, “do you know how to do that?” He directed the question at Freek and Myrtle who had been watching the patterns quietly. They shook their heads and remained silent, it seemed they were still in shock over their ordeal with the hags.
It was at this point the cloaked figure who had been shadowing your party walked past Vicky and the children. Beneath his dull, earth-toned traveling cloak, Vicky could see a man’s face framed by limp brown hair and accented with shifty eyes. He gave a dismissive sideways glance at the group playing in the dirt and proceeded into the inn.
The man took off his cloak as he entered the Blue Water inn and looked around…
The man spotted Garavon leaned up against the door.
“Observant and Prudent,” said the man to Garavon, “I can respect that, Ernst Larnak at your service.” He offered a handshake.
“What do you want, Ernst?” Danika frowned from over her bar.
“Just keeping tabs on the going-ons in Vallaki…I’ll be a terrible trader if I didn’t know my merchandise.”
“You wouldn’t know an honest day’s work if it slapped you in the face,” replied Danika.
“You wound me my dear. I never lie, my very business reputation is at stake. Information is always of value and I provide a valuable service buying and selling it.” Ernst turned to Garavon. “It seems I might have inadvertently offended our barkeep during one of my previous transactions. Who might you be, friend?”
Skanon's gaze followed the cloaked figure as it entered the inn before walking over to Vicky and the children with a small smile. "Greetings Vicky, I'm so relieved to see you again. I'm going to go out on a limb here, but are the others inside?" As he spoke he looked down at the shifting stones and hesitated for a moment before casting Prestidigitation to create the sound of faint musical notes.
"Just a traveller, Neighbor. Going from place to place, trying to make the world a little better as I go," Garavon responds with obvious suspition. "Not that I enjoy being followed. I am sure though that you have reason you would like to share?"
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Vicky smiles slightly when the music begins to play. "Indeed, they are in there. How did you manage with getting into the town alone?" Vicky sips on the wine the brothers had gave her before lifting the pebbles up by magic and tapping them on the ground in sync with the music (performance: 16).

Small smiles crept across Freek and Myrtle’s faces at the change in the dancing stones (successful performance check by Vicky).
Bray’s eyes widened in amazement. “How’d you do that?” he cried. The two boys began mimicking the words and hand movements Vicky and Skanon used, trying to get a patch of unmoving pebbles to dance. Freek and Myrtle soon joined in, and the children’s badly worded incantations and rambunctious giggles filled the afternoon with an air of cheer.
Inside the inn, Ernst replied to Garavon with a small, conciliatory bow. “Apologies for any distress I may have caused. Like I said, information is my bread and butter and there are those who would pay coin for it. I mostly deal with spouses suspecting adultery, rivals hoping to get an edge, and plain old gossip mongers, just to name a few. I would lose my reputation as a reliable source of information if I didn’t keep up with the newest arrivals in town.”
Now that her children were out of earshot, Danika shouted from the bar, “your reputation ain’t worth the shit in my outhouse. Either buy something or get out Ernst,” completely shattering her previous image of a poised barkeep.
Ernst did not seem perturbed at all by Danika’s outburst, he ignored her and continued his conversation with Garavon, “you’re new in town, so here’s a free sample about this inn. Consider it a preview of what I can offer.” Ernst turned to Danika. “It’s been a while since your last shipment of wine isn’t it? You must be running low, I wonder how you’ll keep the Blue Water Inn open when it runs out?”
Danika’s countenance darkened and she opened the kitchen door, gesturing to someone within. A large man in an apron stepped out, cleaver in hand. His black hair and bushy beard were prominently streaked with white, similar to Danika.
“Ernst,” the man growled, advancing on Ernst with his cleaver in hand.
Ernst grabbed his cloak where he had just hung it up and said, “Urwin, always good to see you. I’ll be leaving now,” he managed to say a few quick words to Garavon before leaving the inn, “those who bristle at my presence usually have secrets to hide. I’ll be outside if you want to know more.”
Once Ernst had left, Urwin lowered his cleaver and gave the newcomers in the inn an apologetic smile, “Sorry you had to see that, but that man starts brawls with his words and walks away with his pockets full of gold. I’d rather not have to replace the taproom furniture again!” He gave a big hearty laugh and said, “Welcome to the Blue Water Inn! I’m Urwin Martikov, I trust my wife has been treating you well?”
Outside, Ernst raised an eyebrow at Skanon and Vicky playing with the kids, but said nothing and leaned up against one of the inn’s support pillars and just stood there…watching.
"Oh, hello? Are you okay? Did I not see you quite literally a minute ago?" Vicky is visibly confused at how this same man entered the inn a minute or two, and just left. Vicky sends the pebbles spiralling up through the air like strands of DNA and lowers them down infront of everyone else (other than Ernst).
"If you don't mind me asking, who are you? Garavon did mention..." She cut herself off at what Garavon said, and looked at Skanon, "Entertain the kids, will you?"
Vicky got up and looked at the man (not going to say Ernst because Vicky doesn't presumably know his name) intensely, before gesturing for him to follow Vicky around the corner her of the inn.
"What do you want to do with us. I don't know how long you've followed us, wether it's since arriving or if it's earlier than, but you've followed us..."

Ernst gave Vicky what he thought was a winsome smile. “I’ve followed you since you’ve entered town. As for what I want, how about some introductions?
Here, I’ll go first. Ernst Larnak, purveyor of valuable information. With that he will exit the tavern on Ernst heels, and while he speaks to Vicky he will grab him by the collar and toss him into an alleyway (or something similar and a little out of sight).
