“Both Ankhegs and Bulettes are common in this type of terrain. Let’s hope it is an Ankheg - they are nasty buggers who look like huge scaly praying mantis that have bad breath, likely because they spit acid - but they are better than Bulettes, which like to jump to squish their prey and have super hard armor, so the trees might be the best place if that is what pops up. Either way, it’s time to loin those girds.”

Alistair's heart lurches as the vibration intensified, morphing into a deep, rhythmic tremor. This is no longer something subtle; the earth itself seems to groan under the unseen force. A primal fear, cold and sharp, claws at his insides. Is this a creature, some monstrous horror awakened from its slumber? Or is it something far more insidious, a consequence of my pact with my mistress Fierna, a dark tendril reaching out from the abyss to claim me? He doesn't wait to find out. With a desperate shout, he lunges for the nearest tree (L11), its gnarled branches offering meager protection. Scrambling for cover, he fumbles with his crossbow, a silent prayer escaping his lips as he readies the weapon.

Alerted by the vibrations beneath their feet, Billy and Alistair quickly move out of the way just before a massive insect bursts forth from the ground beneath Zeke, Krog, and Brockes' feet...
The Ankheg bursts through to the surface, only to be met by deep bites from the Half-Orcs' blades. As the ground shifts under their feet Zeke, Krog, and Brockes are knocked PRONE. (Standing from prone uses half of your character's movement for the turn.)
Initiative:
Group 1: Alistair, Billy, Brockes (Prone), & Krog (Prone) in any order
Rising to his feet, Krog severes one of the Ankheg's midlegs with a sweep of his longsword, causing it to topple forward. As it struggles to get it's foreclaws under it, Billy looses a bolt into one of the creature's large eyes. Off-balance, half-blind, and chittering in pain the creature doesn't even notice Brockes until the Half-Orc's axe cleaves through the chitinous armor protecting its head.
As the creature lies in a heap of twitching legs, you feel more rumbling coming from the ground below...
(Everyone has a free round to take action and move in preparation for the next attack)

Krog smiles satisfied with the taking out the big bug, "Oh good! Another one." He stands ready to attack unless he can sense where it is coming up at. Survival 19
“Jumping julippis, I forgot they traveled in hordes. Or is it pods. Or swarms. Oh whatever, bring ‘em on!” He stands up, this time with his feet farther apart, and turns his back to the big big but otherwise stays put.
Alistair watches the unfolding chaos with a detached amusement. A cold, calculating smile spreads across his face. He raises his lute, his fingers dance across the strings, a dark melody weaving its way through the air. It is a song of chaos and destruction, a symphony of violence that echoes the bloodlust burning within him. As the first creature falls Alistair's playing reaches a crescendo. A surge of dark energy pulses through him, a tangible link to the power he has embraced. He is a conductor of chaos, orchestrating a symphony of death and destruction. More ankhegs emerge, their movements erratic and frenzied, seeming to dance to his macabre tune. With a final, triumphant chord, Alistair lowers his lute. His eyes gleam with a predatory light. Preparing to enter the fight, he finds himself strangely exhilarated by the carnage, a twisted pleasure that fuels his dark ambition.
(OOC: Alistair remains in place & readies a crossbow bolt.)
