Lucian gains some hope when Salem and Mordred both seem to think that the disappearance of Doru's fangs is a good sign. He's still on edge, since clearly the whole situation is strange to even Salem, who Lucian is now going to look to as the vampire expert. Whether or not that's unfair, he doesn't know, but until they meet this Rickten person Lucian is going to just trust Salem's judgment.
He listens intently as everyone starts talking, unsure of how or if he can contribute since making decisions for other people is kinda not his thing. He looks to Ravna for the decision on what to do next, since she seems like the most likely to take charge--even with Mordred in the group. He's more than willing to help. He'll do anything to help people make a stand against their wicked dictator.
He blinks in surprise when Doru thanks him along with Salem, feeling a twinge in his gut for some reason he can't pinpoint. Part of him wants to say something about the people who believed in him even though he has his own... well, issue to deal with. But he can't bring himself to. That would only lead to attention he doesn't want to gain right now. Instead he just gives a nervous smile and a nod, then looks back to the rest of the group for what to do next.
After seeing Doru’s fangs disappear Daestra seems more at ease with Doru, still cautious but not as firm in his thoughts of him. As a newcomer to this group he wants to leave any decision making involving Doru up to the others such as Ravna and Mordred.
Speaking with the group “I’m a bit shocked that he was able to retract his fangs, does that show enough for us to trust him? I’m not sure, but I think we should get this holy symbol returned and find Van Rickten as soon as possible, we really don’t know whether things can get worse with these spawn such as their urge to feed again.”
Daestra stands to the side ready to head back up to the church.
Ravna is still a bit wary of Doru, though she doesn't let that feeling show. He may have hidden his fangs, but he still suffers from the curse. That said it still may be necessary to contain him.
She listens intently as Doru tells of his knowledge of Van Rickten. She had figured the man was in hiding. One with knowledge such as his would certainly be a target for Strahd and any wishing to gain his favor. Though someone must know his whereabouts. Perhaps that Seer that woman at the tavern mentioned would have some answers. Hmm, that is all something that will have to be looked into another day.
"Thank you for this information Doru" She says, "I am truly glad you have overcome this curse for now. Though I do still think you should remain here. Your traveling to Valkaki would be dangerous for both you and those around you should you loose yourself again. Perhaps if you remain here you can offer some light to those who remain, including your father. This is a church after all. Even if your father believes it to be defiled, it is not something that should be abandoned so easily. It is holy ground that should be cared for as such. Perhaps you and your father can restore it's light."
As usual, she says this in a rather commanding tone. It is fact after all. Barovia may be dangerous, but at least it is familiar to this poor soul. The excitement and new dangers in travel could cause new stress on this lad, making it easier for the curse to take over once again...and if Barovia is evacuating as a group. That could be disastrous.
After Mordred says his piece, Ravna nods, "As I said before. I will aid you in protecting Ireena on the way to Vallaki. And I accept your offer of lodging. I am ready to return as soon as things here are taken care of. Let us return to Donavich, I'm sure he wishes to know of his son's fate."
Doru seems to nod and agree alongside Doru but this is where Mordred shakes his head for the first time.
"The hordes of undead grow to large and Barovia's defenses are no longer great enough to survive. Doru may have the strength to survive here but Donavich really shouldn't stay behind as he'll be traveling with the refugee's as well. I plan on returning to Barovia with help but Vallaki has greater defenses and distance from castle Ravenloft. Even Parrywhimple grows tired by the day, the village will be lost in time."
Doru contemplates for a moment.
"I'd like to help.. with the refugee's it sounds dangerous but I'll also stay behind. If father won't survive here.. I want him to make it to Vallaki."
Mordred looks to Ravna, though normally it's for guidance it had differed in this moment. Not harsh or at least not any harsher than his usual tones and expressions.
"Those who stay behind will perish lady Ravna, it was the last plan of my late father and it is one of the few things I am sure of. I know Doru's help would be useful for them but I also understand the risk as well so in that regard I leave it to you."
"Except leaving him behind risk him being captured by Strahd he can't resist his direct word. But if he controls his hunger as long as he travels in a group separate from.. Well me he'll gain less attention."
"It is true, I can fight other spawn even or the undead I can only not directly reject Strahd himself. All I ask is someone lets me know if my father is to leave without me."
Mordred nods and looks to Ravna a moment.
"I do not like the idea of abandoning holy ground either milady, but I feel as if I had not explained how bad things were growing in Barovia thus leading to perhaps this tactical mishap. In all other matters though I am open to suggestions even ones that involve exactly how the village/Donavich should be evacuated."
Ireena gives Doru a goodbye hug as he waves to Daestra and than stares to Lucian. He sniffs the air a moment looking to Lucian with a perplexed expression for a moment.
"You've already helped much young elf.. Truly thank you all. I finally feel.. peace at this moment."
And with that the party heads up (And I am sure they lock the undercroft as well) than making their way to Donavich himself with many tactical decisions to consider.
OOC
Kirai said I could post once more before they did but they'll post soon too!
You guys can post again as well if you wish to though!
Salem looked around at everyone but soon looked to Doru. Would this poor man have to be left behind and was his father going to end up leaving? This made his heart ache a bit. He didn't know what he should say though and didn't even know if his thoughts would matter in the end. He looked to Mordred who didn't seem to really agree with anyone staying behind. It was in everyone's best interest to start heading toward Vallaki. He agreed with that too though he was a little disappointed that the village was being over run this way. Had his father really intended to just kill the whole village...
At some point this valley would run out of people. This wasn't the way to be a ruler. His father was cold and yet... Part of him morbidly understood why he was doing this. They had tried to attack the castle. They had tried to kill him. So of course he was angry, but he was taking it out on everyone. Salem sighed softly. His father could be irrational at some points and it seemed he was being so about this village.
If Doru were to go with the group moving towards Vallaki they would be a lot safer on their trip, but he didn't voice this opinion. Less villagers may die... Or maybe none would be lost at all.
So this really was a mass exodus? Lucian hadn't really grasped that earlier, for some reason having thought that it was just Ireena who needed to move elsewhere. But the entire village? He averted his eyes, suddenly worried about how he'll fare in the midst of a crowd. Often, he could use crowds to hide in plain sight... well, assuming no one looked close enough to notice his purple skin and pointed ears, otherwise he stuck out like a sore thumb. It was in those circumstances that he started to dislike all of the eyes and varying expressions around him.
He really needed to get a handle on his nerves. That's what Vilmar had always told him. Oh how he continues to fail at that.
Doru's stare snaps him out of those thoughts... his heartbeat quickening suddenly when the spawn gives him that perplexed look. Why had he...? "I... I'm glad." He says shakily, trying to ignore the fact that he was unnerved for some stupid reason. He rubs his thumb up and down the chain of his pocket watch, giving a nervous smile and a small wave before following the group back upstairs. It felt wrong to leave Doru down there. After what he thought must have been a huge victory... where was Doru's reward? Perhaps that peace would be enough for him, but... what about his father?
"Are... are we going to ask Donavitch if he's willing to see Doru again?" He asks hesitantly, glancing from Mordred back down the stairs. He shuffles his feet for a moment, thinking. He very nearly volunteered to travel with whatever group Doru goes with if they take the villagers in a separate group from Ireena. For some reason he feels like he should offer that... but at the same time... A writhing in his chest reminds him that if Doru loses control and Lucian is the only one there to stand in his way... and if there are innocents there with them... well, things could get way worse for everyone present depending on how quickly the struggle is concluded. He lets out a breath, deciding he'd better wait and see what Ravna chooses before throwing his lot in with any particular option.
His eyes fall downward as these thoughts pass through his head. Clearly, he's at a loss as to what advice to give.
OOC Just a reminder real fast that Ireena isn't going to travel with the massive crowd/village herself for worry it will draw attention to them. It'd be two separate groups
Ravna's eyes narrow when Mordred states that not just a few people are leaving the town, everyone is leaving. "Hmmm, forgive me then. I seem to have misjudged the situation. I've known Barovia was in a bad situation but I was not aware of a mass exodus." She ponders for a moment. "I don't like the idea of leaving Doru here when he could so easily be reclaimed by the darkness. As much as I hate leaving this church to the mercy of the devil, it may be a necessary loss. Perhaps when this is all over it can be reclaimed and rebuilt, but for now the protection of the people is more important. After all, a church is not just a building, but also those who follow the god of that church." She turns back to Doru, "If you wish to remain here then so be it, but perhaps we can work something else out. I am still against your traveling with the townsfolk, but we cannot leave your father here."She doesn't like the idea of him entering Vallaki either, but perhaps that topic can wait. If Barovia is as bad of as it seems, getting everyone including Doru out is the top priority.
"I suggest, if he allows it, that Doru be allowed to bit his father safe travels and let Donovich travel with the villagers. Then Doru can travel with us until we find a better situation for him."She eyes Salem, "Perhaps under your guidance he will become more confident in dealing with his situation."
She turns back to Mordred, "When exactly are you and Ireena planning on leaving? And are you positive the entire town is leaving at once? If we have a few days, we have time to think over this issue more before making a final decision. I also have my own business here to conclude before returning to Vallaki."
Once the group exits the cellar, she will approach Donovich and explain what transpired. (Though she leaves out learning of Salem's heritage) If the man wishes to see his son, she will accompany him back into the cellar to monitor them before returning to the group.
"I perhaps had mentioned it at a time a lot of information was flowing. I am not as good at presenting information as my father was and for that I do apologize."
Ireena looks to Ravna as they consider a plan.
"I'd trust him with the townsfolk because he grew up with all of us. Still.. if one doesn't he can travel with his father. If Donavich is okay with that."
"As much as I want to protect them.. My father should travel in the main group. If you are kind enough to give me a chance. I can travel by myself."
"That's madness.. only Parrywhimple survives hunts alone and he gets badly hurt when he does so."
"But.. I can hunt and feast on animals. My body is different now.. my wounds regenerate. I have Ricktens sword skills.. and strength and speed I don't quiet understand yet. I'm sure after hunting animals it will be even easier to control. It sounds cocky but I am sure I can survive alone if need be. Even my skin.. physical attacks I feel.. will not affect as much such as a wolfs bite won't find as much purchase. I can bide my time in the Svalich forest near Vallaki and avoid civilization for a time if that would make lady Ravna feel better."
Than Ravna had suggested it... Doru traveling with them his eyes widened as he looked to Ireena.
"I.. would love to travel with adventurers it's my life's dream in fact but.. If Strahd approaches Ireena and I am around.. I can help you fight many foes and trials but I cannot ignore Strahd's command.
"Unfortunately Ireena and Doru traveling together is very risky."
"Maybe if we are careful we can avoid Strahd? On the way to Vallaki?"
"Hmm... Doru would help us get through fights quicker and take less breaks. We could make the trip sooner but.. still.."
Mordred looks to Ravna and ponders a moment as he crosses his arms.
"After the funeral with Donavich, I was going to let you all rest at the manor. Traveling Barovia at night is more dangerous. Even if it is false day it provides some light. Also I am not sure if the entire town is leaving all at once or in spurts from each other. I'd say they'd be better with Parrywhimple watching them all at once but Bildrath is very selfish of who Parrywhimple gets to protect. I had planned to leave tomorrow however. However if you have you're own business here first.. Than I would help you with that before we leave. It's the least I can do."
Returning to Donavich
As they travel past the undercroft and back to Donavich and Ravna begins to explain as they leave Doru behind (And lock the undercroft I am sure.)
Donavich listens and than.. Stumbles back by the news. as if he's been struck, his face pale and his eyes wide with shock. For a moment, he simply stands there staring at Ravna, silent- and then the silence is broken by a pained noise, a cross between a gasp and a sob, he clutches his chest as Morded (if Ravna allows) takes the symbol that Doru had returned to them to Donavich. Donavich clutches the symbol for dear life.
Donaviches eyes glisten as he runs a trembling hand through his hair, a myriad of emotions playing across his face in quick succession. Disbelief, rage, grief, shame and finally.. hope. He says against a nearby pew, Mordred raising his hands in offer to help. Donavich holds a hand up as his body shakes from exertion. And than the priest.. Finally speaks.
"He's... still my boy?"
He chokes out once more.
"You're saying.. Little Doru.. is still in there... I am.. So glad. So truly glad... He must hate me.. For locking him away. I.. I should not trouble you with these feelings. With my symbol returned.. I can perform the funeral rites if you all ready."
"It's no trouble Donavich."
Ireena frowns she wants to console her old family friend but doesn't know how too.
Mordred looks to Ravna and Lucian than to Daestra and Salem.
"Lucian.. you're kindness to Doru.. thank you and Salem.. I'm sorry I lost my cool. Ravna and Daestra.. you've remained calm during this whole stressful encounter and bloodshed was not needed in the end. For that I am grateful, I know none of you knew him.. But it mean a lot to me if.. You would come with us to the funeral. If not however you can wait for us at the church if you would prefer."
Daestra rather conflicted agrees with the final decision as they head back up from the undercroft. Will the villagers be safe during this journey? Surely Strahd could over power us in a combative situation, but hopefully nothing like that comes of fruition. We’ll be lucky if we don’t come across him on the way to Vallaki, but we have no other choice but to progress forward. He heads over to Donavich and listens as he stands in disbelieve that his son really could still okay. Handing the holy symbol over to the priest Mordred thanks us all and hopes we’ll join him in sending his friend off.
Daestra lays his arm on Mordred’s shoulder “I see how much he meant to you, for me that is all that matters. I am honored to be here for the funeral, I’m sure he was a great man and a great friend.”
Daestra kneels next to Mordred to show his respect.
Salem followed them all back up. He had looked to Ravna when she mentioned that under his guidance that Doru might get used to his circumstance. He thought about that as he walked up the steps. For a moment he was barely listening to what anyone was saying. Could he guide Doru and help him to better understand what he was? If there was a way to turn him back he would love for that. He had a feeling even if Doru got comfortable with his new form and abilities that maybe he would like to return to a more... Human state. He didn't know how he felt about that. Even Salem himself wasn't completely human. He fed upon blood to survive. He also could live a long time.
Doru traveling with them could be very dangerous... He wouldn't be able to stop his father if he decided to just tell Doru to attack... He sighed softly. He didn't know what he could do in that matter. He slowly looked to Mordred when he heard his question. He didn't feel like he deserved to be out there at the funeral. No... He felt like he should remain behind.
"Maybe I should remain behind when you head out to do the funeral."
Not that he didn't appreciate what he was saying or anything, but he felt like he just shouldn't be there when his father was probably the reason why they even had to hold this funeral.
Ravna nods at the reaction to her suggesting Doru travel with them. Their concern is logical, and one that she had considered. Though she wanted to hear what they had to say about it. There were pros and cons to both options, but all in all, to her it boiled down to being easier to protect a single person over a crowd.
She nods again to Mordred, that makes sense. And if that's the case then perhaps Doru and his father could travel with one of the smaller groups. Whatever is decided, can be decided later though, best to let the priest in on what's going on now.
After explaining to Donovitch what happened, Ravna remains as calm as ever. She makes no objection to Mordred returning the holy symbol. After all, that was the main reason they'd gone to see Doru.
Once this is finished she nods to Mordred again, "I will attend the funeral. Your father was a great man, I may not remember him well but I know that much." She glances back at Salem when he states he should remain behind. She's not sure how to feel about that, as Salem likely knew Mordred's father better than she, though she does understand his reasoning.
Lucian decides not to voice his own opinion on where Doru should end up. As he thought previously, it seems risky to have Doru with Ireena, as he could be used as a tool by Strahd. However it seems risky to leave him with the rest of the village as well. Still Lucian doesn't like the thought of leaving Doru alone, in the woods or with the villagers. He should be with people who understand his predicament, not people who are going to treat him like a monster.
Perhaps that's a question for after the funeral.
"I... uh... sure,"he says when Mordred once again asks them to join him and Ireena. Lucian feels very out of place since he knows absolutely nothing about Mordred and his family, but that shouldn't matter. He's there for support if nothing else. "I'll join you."
Mordred stammers a bit embarrased by Daestra's earnest gesture. Ireena smiles warmly, she almost nudges her brother playfully but.. A day like this is too much for her to keep up her usual attitude. Mordred kneels and places a hand on Daestra's shoulder.
"We are all equal in the Morninglords eyes, I am grateful for the gesture but I wish you all to stand beside me as friends. Thank you.. Daestra truly."
As Mordred stands up he offers Daestra a hand as he looks to Salem.
"I.. I'm sorry I lost my temper you.. Are still our Salem. Our friend."
Ireena walks up and holds Salem's hand with a smile.
"Come on, I always tease that Mordred's you're lover. You can't let him go alone now... You're our friend. Sometimes friends fight... or is it something else? Still.. if you wanna wait at the mansion I won't make you go Salem."
Mordred clears his throat in a quick fluster shaking his head at his sisters silly antics.
Mordred walks beside Ravna as they head toward the graveyard.
"I feel Doru.. may be an even greater danger with us. But.. I understand keeping the crowd safe. I.. Thank you for coming. Besides Mary.. Ireena never had other female friends. Woman that have bright pink hair.. Like a lotus are cursed in Barovia. It's an old adage.. It was always hard for her to make friends. I wonder what her life was like.. Before she met father and me."
Ireena excitedly holds Lucians hand with a soft smile but the cracks begin to show.. While she is happy to make new friends. The act of staying peppy.. tears threaten to invade her eyes as they head to the graveyard. Ireena and Mordred begin to dig as Donavich prepares a prayer (Any that help them will speed the process up accordingly.)
As they lay the coffin into the ground Donavich begins to Pray.
Oh Morninglord
Lord of blessed light and patron of new beginnings
We commend into thy mercy and thy radiance master Kolyan Indirovich.
Now dpearted hence from us and gone evermore into your glory.
We beseech thee to grant him onto him thy mercy and everlasting peace.
As thou deliver'st him from this everlasting darkness into everlasting light.
From pestilence into growth
From Shadows into Day.
And from death onto new life.
Grant him you're light and you're land of joy and sunlight.
In the fellowship of thy saints. In Lugdana.. in many more.
And the brilliance of thy presence.
By you're will and grace.. amen.
A moment of silence falls before..
An eerie green light suffuses the graveyard. From this light emerges a ghostly procession. Wavering images of doughty women toting greatswords, woodwise men with slender bows, dwarves with glittering axes, and archaically dressed mages with beards and strange, pointed hats—all these and more march forth from the graveyard, their numbers growing by the second.
Than from the grave of the late Kolyan, a large white bearded man with a claymore of his own. He looks to this death march.. and begins to walk the sullen march to Ravenloft himself. Donavich bows his head.
Ireena clutches her hands as she lets go of Lucian rushing forward.
"FATHER! PLEASE!! Please.. You had so much more to teach me! How to use a sword! How to hunt.. How to make.. New friends. You.. you can't go! I.. I need you here please! Please!! Stay!" She clutches a hand over her chest as the ghostly procession looks to her for a moment their eyes white and hollow. Mordred puts a hand on Ireena but he too seems to be trembling at this sight.
Lucian's face once more turns a deep purple as Ireena grabs his hand again, and he inadvertently avoids eye contact as they proceed with the funeral. He's glad that he can offer some support, but he is so very not used to this sort of interaction.
His eyes go wide when the apparitions appear. Ghosts? This is not something he was prepared for. He is momentarily pulled out of his shock when Ireena suddenly lets go of his hand and runs forward towards one of the ghosts. Lucian hadn't recognized any of them, but apparently this spirit once belonged to the body they are preparing to bury.
Lucian helps with the digging, not speaking due to not knowing what to say as well as being slightly unnerved by this sight. He wishes there is some sort of condolence he could offer, but he is completely at a loss. After all, nothing can mend death. Especially not here in the Valley.
Even though Daestra didn’t know this man he still sheds a tear for him after seeing how much he meant to both Mordred and Ireena. He trembles a bit as he stands and watches the funeral.
Ravna stands in solumn silence as the funeral transpires, she remains silent even as the apparitions appear. Her face shows little emotion even as Ireena rushes over to what appears to be her father's ghost, though a glint of pity shows in her eyes.
"He cannot stay Ireena. We can do nothing else for him. Let him go."Her voice is steady, though this sight unnerves her as well. All these souls, forced to march to the dread castle. Is this what death holds? Is there no piece even after drawing a final breath? Cold anger grips her chest, though her heart still grieves. Surely sending the devil back to the depths will free them.
Salem had thought he was going to resign himself to stay behind, but when Ireena took his hand and spoke to him he let out a soft breath. Fine. He would go. He should. They were friends. He quietly followed after them thinking over what Mordred had said. He let out a soft sigh. Ireena did tease him and Mordred a lot, but today he didn't really feel like saying much towards it. He looked slowly towards Mordred.
"It is okay Mordred. I am sorry too. I shouldn't have went on the defensive."
He took a deep breath and watched as the priest held the ceremony. He watched all of the spirits and frowned. Of course... They moved towards his fathers castle... No it wasn't just his father's castle, but it was his own as well. Something had to be done about this. He looked to Ireena and then to Mordred. This had to be hard on them.
Daestra digs as the spirits roam toward Ravenloft. Lucian aids him in this unsure what to add what to say at such a sight.
Mordred clenches his fist looking onto his father and sister as Salem speaks at his side.
"I went on the offensive.. we are friends. My father.. he liked you.. and he was sharper than both of us. I have a feeling.. That he knew and he accepted you anyway. Without fear or anger.. Another way of proof I suppose, that I really am the lesser. I.. Will try to be better. If I stumble.. I hope you stand beside me. I am lucky to have met such kind souls."
Ireena spins her head to Ravna with tears invading her eyes, her chest heaving up in down as water runs down her cheeks. Her fist clenching her eyes narrow to a look.. "It isn't fair." It's written all over her face almost as if she was a child.
"I can't! I can't just.. Let him go on this horrible march... Over and over and over again.. I'm his daughter. I... May have been adopted but he was.. Is.. My father I can't leave him. I..."
She begins to trembles as their father has light return to his eyes. He whispers something offering one final farewell to Mordred and than.. To Ireena. As his eyes glaze over and he begins his solemn march once more.
Lucian shivers as the scene unfolds. Is this all the afterlife holds for them? Not just for Ireena's father, but for everyone in the valley? He swallows hard, hands clenched tightly on the shovel as he pauses in his work.
"If we overthrew Strahd... would this stop too?"He asks quietly, barely loud enough to be heard. It seems the rumors he'd heard about the lights from this side of the valley were right. The dead never rest.

"I...I'll help wherever I can..."
Daestra stands to the side ready to head back up to the church.
Ravna is still a bit wary of Doru, though she doesn't let that feeling show. He may have hidden his fangs, but he still suffers from the curse. That said it still may be necessary to contain him.
She listens intently as Doru tells of his knowledge of Van Rickten. She had figured the man was in hiding.

Just a reminder real fast that Ireena isn't going to travel with the massive crowd/village herself for worry it will draw attention to them.
I am still against your traveling with the townsfolk, but we cannot leave your father here." She doesn't like the idea of him entering Vallaki either, but perhaps that topic can wait. If Barovia is as bad of as it seems, getting everyone including Doru out is the top priority.
"I suggest, if he allows it, that Doru be allowed to bit his father safe travels and let Donovich travel with the villagers. Then Doru can travel with us until we find a better situation for him." She eyes Salem, "Perhaps under your guidance he will become more confident in dealing with his situation."
Mordred looks to Ravna and nods
"I... uh... sure," he says when Mordred once again asks them to join him and Ireena.

Please!! Stay!"
She clutches a hand over her chest as the ghostly procession looks to her for a moment their eyes white and hollow.
Daestra also wishes to help with the digging.
Let him go." Her voice is steady, though this sight unnerves her as well.
"I...I...."
Lucian shivers as the scene unfolds. Is this all the afterlife holds for them? Not just for Ireena's father, but for everyone in the valley? He swallows hard, hands clenched tightly on the shovel as he pauses in his work.
"If we overthrew Strahd... would this stop too?" He asks quietly, barely loud enough to be heard. It seems the rumors he'd heard about the lights from this side of the valley were right. The dead never rest.
