You stand at the edge of a raised and broken causeway under a hazy, twilit sky. The causeway, which is built from pale stones that glow faintly from within, towers over the surrounding landscape, but large sections of it have crumbled away. The parts that remain in place are separated by large gaps where portions have collapsed.
A fog-shrouded swamp spreads out below you in all directions, and up from its murk wafts the smell of rotting plants. Also rising from the swamp is the music of nature—a discordant symphony of croaking frogs and singing birds.
I'd like to run the Wild Beyond the Witchlight, but skipping the whole carnival aspect of it, and starting directly when you enter the Feywild. Once characters are chosen, we can discuss a shared background, and we'll discuss how/why you got to the Feywild in the first place.
Any race/class from officially published core D&D material is open, for non-core material (Critical Role, Acquisitions Inc., etc) please ask first. You can roll stats here, starting at 3rd level. Keep in mind, the entire campaign CAN be completed without a single combat, so I'm more interested in your social engagement than challenging you in combat. Also keep in mind, the campaign is "weird," but not silly. Think the Labyrinth or The Dark Crystal, there are elements that COULD be silly, but they work because you take it seriously.
If you're still interested please provide:
Character name, class, background, and a brief backstory.
Sleet was a typical human pain in the thistle kid. Always the one in the middle of chaos, mischef and anything else that gets normal folk riled up. During a venture into some local woods to poach game, he stumbled into a fairy circle and was transported to the feywild. As was his 'way', he tore up flowers and plants, broke limbs of shrubs and trees, and 'when nature called', pee'ed in a pond -- which happened to be home to a nymph. News of this destruction and disregard soon reached the ears of the Winter Queen and She was not happy.
Instead of a simple rejection from the feywild or smiting him dumb and blind, the Queen felt spending time as a fey would open his eyes (and maybe his heart) to the world... taking out of his own self absorption. He was named 'Sleet' and transformed into a 13 inch fairy? pixie? sprite? (these are so confusing to humans!) with the sorcerous powers of WInter.
Since then, Sleet has flitted between the human and fey realms trying to 'do better' and end his punishment -- though, as the years pass, it is getting harder and harder to recall just why he wanted to go back to being a 'basic human'. And, there has been no sign from the Queen that his sentence is close to complete.

Hi there, I'd love to take part in this campaign. Would you be running it on this forum or through something like Discord or something else?
I have three concepts I'd like to share, each of which could be tweaked or customized depending on the direction of the campaign, etc.
----- Victor Sable
Human Rogue (Inquisitor)
Background: Haunted One
Victor Sable was a good-for-nothing man, floating through life on his own luck. Coming from a modest noble estate, he married a pretty girl and had a few kids. But mostly Victor gambled and drank his life and fortunes away. But his life took a tragic turn when he witnessed the brutal slaughter of his family by a werewolf. The incident left him devastated and guilt-ridden, for at the time of the attack, Victor was intoxicated and unable to protect his loved ones. In fact the only reason he wasn’t killed as well was because he passed out.
But the sight of his family brutally slain, and waking up to the scene of the crime for which he himself was blamed, left an indelible mark.
Haunted by the traumatic memories, Victor turned his pain into a relentless pursuit of monsters. He delved into the world of investigation, driven by the need to uncover the hidden truths that elude others. Outwardly, he’s the charming gentleman, but his charming demeanor conceals a tormented soul, forever scarred by the events that unfolded that fateful night.
Now, as a Rogue Investigator, Victor seeks answers and redemption in the shadows, ever wary of betrayal and driven by a relentless pursuit of the truth. His haunted past fuels his determination, propelling him into the heart of darkness that awaits in Barovia.
Personality Traits:
- Always suspicious: Victor questions everything and everyone, his haunted past making trust a rare commodity.
- Charming exterior: His charismatic facade is a mask for the trauma and guilt that lurk beneath the surface.

Fennick the Fool
Half Orc Bard (College of Satire)
Background: Feylost
Fennick’s tale begins in the depths of a dank and dismal dungeon, where he was imprisoned by a band of bumbling goblins. Despite the darkness that surrounded him, Fennick found solace in the sound of his own laughter, using humor as a shield against despair.
One fateful night, as the moon cast its eerie glow upon the prison walls, Fennick discovered a hidden passage leading to freedom. But instead of fleeing, he embarked on a quest to uncover the legendary Labyrinth of Lunacy, a maze said to be filled with riddles, traps, and the most absurd creatures imaginable.
As Fennick delved deeper into the labyrinth, he encountered a motley assortment of bizarre beings: talking rabbits who spoke in riddles, dancing mushrooms that sang limericks, and even a gelatinous cube with a penchant for puns. Yet through it all, Fennick remained undaunted, using his quick wit and sharp tongue to outmaneuver each absurd challenge.
Finally, after countless trials and tribulations, Fennick emerged from the labyrinth victorious, wielding not only his bardic talents but also a newfound appreciation for the absurdities of life. Armed with his wit and a repertoire of ridiculous tales, he now roams Faerun, entertaining crowds with his unique brand of humor and spreading joy wherever he goes.
But beneath his jovial exterior lies a hint of darkness, a reminder of the trials he faced in the depths of the Labyrinth of Lunacy. For Fennick knows that even in the most absurd of worlds, there are shadows lurking in the corners, waiting to be faced with a laugh and a song.

Magnus Thornwood
Half elf ranger (beast master)
Background: entertainer
Magnus Thornwood comes from a long line of circus performers and entertainers. As is the case with many who take on the circus life, one must find their calling and special gift. Magnus, fond of nature and animals, roams the realms, seeking out the rarest and most enigmatic creatures to populate his traveling circus, aptly named "Magnus's Marvelous Menagerie."
With his silver tongue and quick wit, Magnus convinces creatures from all corners of the world to join his circus, promising them a life of wonder and adventure under the spotlight. From fire-breathing salamanders to winged fae dragons, Magnus has a talent for charming even the most elusive and exotic beasts.
But Magnus's true skill lies in his ability to showcase these creatures in thrilling performances that leave audiences spellbound. With a mix of daring acrobatics, dazzling illusions, and heart-pounding stunts, Magnus turns his menagerie into a spectacle unlike any other, drawing crowds from far and wide to witness the wonders of the circus.
Yet, beneath Magnus's charming facade lies a burning desire to prove himself as the greatest showman in all the realms. As the scion of a long line of circus performers, Magnus feels the weight of his family's legacy resting upon his shoulders, driving him to seek out ever more incredible creatures to showcase in his circus.
With his loyal troupe of performers and his trusty animal companions by his side, Magnus travels from town to town, spreading joy and wonder wherever he goes. And though the road may be long and fraught with danger, Magnus knows that as long as he has his menagerie, he can overcome any obstacle that stands in his way.

playing Jin Wei, human (Kara-tur) way of the Four Elements Monk in the Princes of the Apocalypse
Heya. I definitely am more a fan of roleplay than combat (tho I for sure don't mind it) so love to hear that. Also, the Feywild as a concept is very interesting. I have a few character ideas, and by few I mean a lot. I'm also just up for making a character that's linked to another player's backstory or somehow linked to something the DM has that he would like to throw at a player. So pretty flexible in that regard. For now tho I'll just throw in a few summarized character ideas to give an idea of stuff I like to play.
Kino, a Reborn Great Old One Warlock of The Forest. The Forest is kind of like a concept, the idea that all things when they die return to the earth, the Forest. Your bones will rest beneath the soil, all of nature is connected, nature always reclaims civilizations that have fallen, etc. Kino didn't have a great life, ignored by her family and for most of it she felt really empty. The forest near her home always felt like more of a home than her house ever did, she always felt like she could go there. Like she belonged there. One day she went to sleep and she just.. didn't want to leave. Didn't want to wake up. She died there but she woke up again and a part of the Forest was now inside of her. This could be a forest on the material plane where the veil between it and the Feywild was thin.
Joy, an Eladrin Elf wild magic barbarian. For her I think it'd be cool to lean into the Fey lore thing. She hates iron and literally cannot lie, not straight-up lies at least though wordplay is certainly always an option. Her father is a powerful Fey and she never really knew her mother but her dad has told her stories about her, she was an Elf from the material plane. Her relationship with her father is good. She's just trying to enjoy herself honestly, she picked the name Joy for a reason. She doesn't have much of a moral compass, having been raised in the Feywild and all. But she's kinda interested in morality, even if it's very confusing.
Johanna, a Changeling necromancy wizard/rogue. Not much in terms of backstory yet, I might link her to someone else. Johanna doesn't think necromancy magic is evil, there's no such thing as evil magic. People being scared of it is all the more reason for it to be researched, people fear what they don't understand after all. She travels the world stealing magical knowledge, it's rude of people to hoard it after all. Especially 'forbidden' knowledge. Why keep it if you're not even doing anything with it?
Hansel, Changeling arcane trickster rogue. Hansel will be the first to admit that she's a thief and a backstabber. For someone who lies so much, she's pretty straightforward. She lies and lies and lies especially about who she is and where she came from, you can't trust anything she says to be the truth. Sometimes the lies are obvious, sometimes they're not. She has a fascination for all things magic and likes to steal any magic items she comes across, she's infiltrated multiple cults and such only to steal their shinies. She woke up with no memory just 8 years ago, when she was 16 (?) ish at least. She's been going from one job to the next, one place to the next, ever since. She just kinda goes wherever and does whatever.
Everybody is posting some amazing characters! Guess talking a walk in the feywild is popular (to some).
As opposed to my buddy, SLEET, above, I present Bell Wheather - Human Wizard
Big round glasses perched on a button nose. A blonde cloud of hastily finger combed hair. That self same button nose always stuffed deep in a book. Miss Wheather was asking 'why' since she was a child. Later, that became 'how'. Continually at a person's knee trying to gain insight into the world she lived in. One she stumbled into the printed word -- she was in her own form of heaven. Of course, when a tutor passed word to the local tower about a child with a sharp mind and voracious appetite for knowlege... Bell's parents were more than happy to accept the scholarship and sent Bell packing!
Bell studied hard and never cultivated all those interpersonal skills -- like drinking ale until dawn before a big exam or snogging the boy in town that claimed he was the secret love child of the local lord. No, our studious Bell kept herself surrounded with books and practiced all she could uncover into the ways of wizardry. Of course, the tower could only keep her so long and then they started talking about 'student loan repayments'. This threw Bell for a curve for she knew her parents had little in the way of coinage and her 'book learning' had yet to be put into practice. So, she graduated (was sent packing) with a contract that stated she would send monthly payments of coin and/or any new books and scrolls she might come upon until such time as her debt was repaid.
Story: Doc” O'Hara was once a noted alchemist and physician before his life changed forever. He made a habit of delving into the storm drains and catacombs to gather stocks for his alchemical experiments- these trips that brought him into contact with the were-rats that infected him. All the alchemical tricks he had staved off full lycanthropy but left him less than fully human, and sometimes not human at all. Unable to continue as an apothecary physician, he now works as both smarts and muscle for the “Rat King”
Description: Doc’s brown eyes squint in the sunlight. His buck-toothed rat-like facial features are framed with unkempt brown-gray beard and hair. His clothes were once-fine merchant attire and a gray lab coat, but are now disheveled and stained. A sturdy pistol belt holds a small book-box on one hip and an oversized revolver on the other. A battered leather doctor’s bag is secured to his shoulder with a bandolier that once held massive revolver shells but now contains metal potion vials labeled with arcane runes- some glow slightly. A scruffy sewer owl sits on his shoulder.

Old school AD&D player, now learning to be a better DM dad
Backstory: A slave from birth, hatched as a spoil of war. Beaten and abused from that moment, he was refined as a killer. It wasn't until he spat icicles on his enemies and cursed in an ancient tongue that his owners gave him magic to refine a potent war weapon. He was dubbed "Alabaster" by his handlers for the way frost seemed to latch to his rags, giving him the visage of a fine silken tapestry. It wasn't until he was freed that he felt anything other than bloodlust and exhaustion. Once he was free, however, he could only feel the need to remain free, in whatever form that takes. In that moment, he felt great fear. He slaughtered his would be liberator in panic and ran, as far and as fast as his legs could carry him. He regrets this loss of control, but there's no going back. NEVER. "NEVER! YOU HEAR ME, BRAASĆHAG!? NEVER!!"
Note: He doesn't speak a word of Common tongue. Undercommon and Draconic, but no Common. Don't know if that's of interest.
Name: Trill (she produces a series of notes as her name, but Trill is what she answers to)
Race: Kenku
Class: Bard
Background: Sailor
Backstory: Trill grew up on near the docks, and learned her first songs (and curse words) from the various sailors stopping in at port. She found occasional work in the inns and taverns, both cleaning up and serving (being able to repeat customers orders verbatim in their voice), and occasionally being able to perform. What she really wanted was to have a position on a ship, and eventually convinced a captain to take her on board. It started as a joke, assigning her to the crow's nest, but with her sharp eyesight and being high above the ship, it was almost like flying, a deep desire for almost any kenku. Thus passed the best few years of her young life, before the ship she crewed was set upon in a fog by a pirate vessel, and the rest of her crew slaughtered. She made it through, and seeks information on the ship that ended her dreams.

"Three wizards and a warlock walk into an enchanted swamp" sounds like either a really good or a really bad joke. I kinda like the sound of it, though.
Brief backstory: A peculiar mix of ferocity, kindness, and creativity, Gerien is frequently on the receiving end of good-natured jests by his centaur clan members who aren't quite sure what to make of him. Is he warrior or poet? Will he prepare for battle or write a ballad? What does he prize more: his sword or his lute? Gerien endures this teasing with a smile, for he often wonders about the answers to those questions himself. Maybe the next adventure will provide an answer...
Prince Colember, Noble, Oath of the Ancients paladin.
Second son of a battle-weary Human king and his Elven wife, Colember struggled his whole life trying to find a balance between his heritages. He was loved by his parents, but was also used by them as a battleground in their cold war of a marriage, as their union was very much political in nature. He left home once he reached his majority, hoping to find in the world a balance he could not at home.

Coriana - Company of the Grey Chain Wagner - Dragon Heist: Bards. DM - The Old Keep
Brief backstory: (I have a more fulsome backstory written, but here is the highlights)
Grew up as part of a family/troupe of nomadic performers/thieves known as the Revelry
He and his brother Bennett were skilled card throwers; one would pickpocket audience members while the other performed and vice versa
During a heist, he and his brother tumbled into a cavern and fell into the Underdark
Brother died from the fall, Otto survived, and was taken in by Myconids after being led to them by a vision of Zyblina
Lived with Myconids for 8 years until he was old enough and skilled enough to survive the journey back to the surface
Back on the surface, is searching to find his lost family; taken up life of adventuring so he could travel and try to find them
Time with Myconids (solely speaking through rapport spores for so long) forged new channels within his brain, and imbued him with latent psionic capabilities that he has slowly learned to unlock as his skills as an adventurer have developed
Most recently, his psionics have made him a Soul Knife Rogue, and his psi-knives take the shape of playing cards
His vague recollection of Zyblina has him now set out for Prismeer, in the hopes she can help him find his family
I'm going to temporarily close this. I've reached out to the players whose characters I think will fit best in what I'm interested in running. But if any of them change their minds I'll reopen this.

Old school AD&D player, now learning to be a better DM dad
Prince Colember, Noble, Oath of the Ancients paladin.
Second son of a battle-weary Human king and his Elven wife, Colember struggled his whole life trying to find a balance between his heritages. He was loved by his parents, but was also used by them as a battleground in their cold war of a marriage, as their union was very much political in nature. He left home once he reached his majority, hoping to find in the world a balance he could not at home.

I'm going to temporarily close this. I've reached out to the players whose characters I think will fit best in what I'm interested in running. But if any of them change their minds I'll reopen this.
Thanks all for the interest!
