The world went dark. Claws raked across Daewen's chest, the air whooshing out of her lungs. One moment she was dodging the owlbear's fury, the next she was sprawled on the dirt, the taste of blood metallic on her tongue. But then, a jolt of white-hot magic ripped through her. Gasping, she lurched upright, the world shimmering into focus.

Fury, raw and primal, replaced the sting of death. The monstrous owlbear loomed before her, its fetid breath washing over her. With a snarl that only she could hear, Daewen tore her rapiers from their sheaths. A blur of silver, she launched a two-pronged attack.
