"I think you misunderstand a bit, I am asking about our past and ability, not just because of combat effectiveness. I want to know why Vecna chose US specifically...It seems pretty odd for someone like Vecna to put ANY attention to us, don't you think?"
"Thank you for the food, Fafnir. And I don't feel there's any particular meaning in choosing us. The selections could very well be just a random assortment of sacrifices. They made us feel uneasy because it could happen to any of us. And if you remember the gathering at the Palace, Vecna wasn't shy about killing us itself. The whole 'event' was probably just a formality to continue the facade."
"Speculation only goes so far, we need evidence, and more explanation..." I put my cup of coffee down, put my fork down on my plate, glanced at Calanin for a moment questioning their quietness, then looked at Freytha sternly.
"Don't we, Freytha? You never told us about your past, and why you are doing this and helping us. Was there any reason why Vecna chose us? How were you affected by Vecna? There is so much more I could ask." [Intimidation to Freytha: 15] [Perception, to see any reaction, looking at Freytha: 15(9 + 6)]
"Now this is just unnecessary... Calanin, calm down. Nobody is going to hurt us. And Saferetan, you're spiraling again. Freytha saved us for a reason. And Fafnir even fed us. If they meant us harm, they're doing an awful job at it. Let's just listen to them before we start attacking, can we?"
Matthyse just looks disappointed at this display... then he faces Fafnir and Freytha (if she's even there).
"I think we've had enough to eat for now. And the way things are, we really need to know what you intend for us to do now that we know about The Brotherhood and Vecna's plans for multiversal domination."
"...I...Understand...I was just being cautious, you understand Freytha, don't you?" I don't want to show all my cards yet, so it's better to figure out more things, "My questions still stand. But I want to learn more about what we can do to help."

"We were just doing our job - finding people who fit the description: have seen or experienced Vecna, could become powerful explorers and warriors, and/or could be helpful to us," Freytha says. She doesn't twitch. Either she's telling the truth, or something that she's been led to believe is.
"That's it in a nutshell," Fafnir says. "We need someone to figure out how to destroy Vecna. We're passing that to you."

I shrug, "Why did you think I wasn't worried when I saw Vecna? I knew what he was and what he looked like, that's why. Don't you know the fog cloud spell requires a decent amount of time to prepare? How do you think I knew they were going to barge in?"
" *sigh* I was being watched profusely, the slightest twitch or tone in the wrong direction...me and you and all of us could've died. He knew I knew, probably didn't know how much I knew, but knew that I knew something regardless, so he kept a big eye on me." "Remember what I said earlier? 'I get your feelings. BUT DON'T RISK OTHERS' LIVES JUST BECAUSE OF YOUR RAGE.' Why did you think I said 'I get your feelings'?"
I sit in the corner and listen. I'm not entirely happy with the answers I've received, but they're certainly not the worst reasons.
And of course the wizard didn't say anything. Knowledge is a power fit for the dregs of society. It's easy to speak of honor when you have the righteous social standing of a cleric, or the self sufficient means of a ranger in the wilds. But in cities, where people struggle for food and water, acknowledgement or status, information is everything.
Besides, like any other deity, a God known is far stronger than a God obscured.
"Ugh... now my head hurts. I know nothing about wizardry, but I do understand the need to maintain your knowledge a secret. Especially in enemy territory. I was more just surprised that you knew the whole time. And the whole bit about it letting you know was just confusing me even more. But from what has been said so far, it makes sense. Vecna probably just didn't feel the need to get rid of you immediately. And thus chose you to 'participate' in the games."
And he looks at Freytha to add
"And as for passing onto us the responsibility of finding its weaknesses, that's a bold statement. Apart from Safe, we basically know nothing of that creature. However, I'll listen to your plans and help as much as I can. I don't like being toyed with."
I took another sip of my coffee, I told them that information so they could trust me more. I can gain more information about Vecna, even if it's more of a 2nd hand information based on their past...it could be useful. I want to get rid of that being. "With that, I still want to know what you are asking for us to do...At the very least we need battle experience. Otherwise, what is the point of finding a weakness in Vecna if we aren't strong enough to exploit it?"
Fafnir grumbles, obviously unhappy, but he does his job. He walks over to an empty patch of wooden wall and taps it in several precise places. A small crevice opens up, and a scroll is barely revealed in the shadows of the wall. He pulls it out and walks over, unrolling a massive piece of brittle parchment with crude drawings and scriptures on it.
He gestures for you to come look.

"Should we show them?" Fafnir asks Freytha.
"Show them," Freytha replies. "I trust them."
