Nikkitch: The faces are distorted, barely human, seemingly in pain. A few seem to be in a state of melting, skin sloughing off or twisting in grotesque ways. Whoever was responsible for crafting these had a lot of imagination. The black mildrew dripping out of the various holes has a slimy quality and smells of spoiled milk. It invokes memories of the various oozes that you have encountered so far, but seems harmless and bereft of magical qualities.
The kenku turns and approaches the mound of "gold." His first thought is to test its touch, but how?
...he removes the vial holding his spider, gathered quite a while back, and upends it onto a portion of the "gold," backing away just after. Is it eaten?
The spider drops onto the surface of the "gold" and immediately begins to squirm. Nikkitch, as he is stepping away, realizes that its dying, reacting like it's being dissolved.
After a short moment, the whole surface coating the altar begins bubbling and animating. It splits at the top, two parts of the mass dropping to either side. The skin of these oozes are still a golden hue, but seems much duller now that they're actively moving.
Seeing the oozes appear Pisgah shouts "Damn it! Everyone hit these things from a distance! Don't let them close in on you. Run north up the hallway and we can fight them while we retreat! "
Pisgah takes the disengage action as he runs to stand in front of Steel. As he runs he sheaths the longsword.
Nikk waits until he's the last one out, backing into the hall only far enough that he can still see the far wall, behind the nearby oozes.
Unsurprisingly, he then launches a Fireball between the amoeboids, aiming carefully with the intent to hit both. Damn. What was the right answer, he wonders.
Rico agreed, "Yes, I don't think we want to mess with an alter to the all-consuming demon lord Juiblex. He's the good of oozes by the way. Maybe that giant gelatinous cube has something to do with that altar."
OOC: Rico doesn't talk much but tends to keep talking once she starts...
[I'd like to believe that Rico just continues explaining the intricacies of the Juiblex mythology while the oozes attack the party, but is she not taking any action in combat? Feel free to take two turns next if this wasn't intended. For now, I'm moving Rico one space back to make room for a retreating Nikkitch.]
There is a dull roar, followed by a shockwave, as the fireball explodes around the oozes (both failed their Dex). They come creeping out of the smoke, much reduced. Clearly, they are not as sturdy as some of the other oozes you have met. One shot of Canti thunks into O1.
Because the party has retreated like you did, they are forced to dash across to try and get to Pisgah and Nikkitch.
Initative: 1. Your Party < YOUR TURN 2. Oozes (both bloodied)

Last turn Rico would have shot at the ooze in the lead, switching to the other ooze, then backing up. She would have ordered Steel to bring up the rear, but to retreat rather than attack.
Attack 13 damage 14
Attack 18 damage 16
The next turn she'll order Steel to protect Pisgah and Nikkitch while she sends more magic shots at the oozes
Attack 26 damage 16
Attack 13 damage 14
Steel will try to position to Deflect Attack without getting in anyones way (looks like that might not be possible if Ooze 1 doesn't go down.)
The oozes, both quite weakened by the fireball, do not manage to withstand the onslaught of projectiles from Rico, Ardnek and Canti, as well as the sword strikes from Pisgah. The material they're composed of loses its coherency and they both blubber slowly to the ground. A faintly gold/ochre mess spreads across the floor.
The altar they had left has much the same clumplike shape without them. Rico already knows that this room is dedicated to Juiblex, so for her it's obvious that the altar depicts the slime lord itself. It's made of dark stone and fashioned much in the same style as the visages along the wall.
We're out of initiative!
Everyone gets 200 XP for dealing with the oozes. Also, belatedly, an additional 350 XP for learning what you did about the gelatinous cube room.
" Boy, that was fun. I am beginning to see why you Wizard types always like to throw a fireball! Thanks Nikk, that was very effective. Does anyone want to check anything else on the alter?. "
Unless anyone wants to check something, Pisgah begins heading to the unexplored corridor to the south.

The kenku has a thought. He walks to the walls, and begins to further examine the faces carved on either side. "Just. A. Moment..."
[Investigation w/ advantage via kenku recall: 16]
Concerned with the aura this room is giving off, Pisgah motions the others to stay back as he draws Jaya's Blade and goes to stand 5 feet behind Nikk.

Pisgah moves to be opposite of Nikk. "If this thing comes to life, I want to be able to attack hard."
The spider drops onto the surface of the "gold" and immediately begins to squirm. Nikkitch, as he is stepping away, realizes that its dying, reacting like it's being dissolved.

The oozes attack!

Ardnek draws his short bow and shoots at the Ooze next to Pisgah, but he fumbles with it as it catches on his backpack.
Attack Shortbow: 1 dmg: 18 (piercing 15 + bludge 3)
He will then bonus action to dash to the end of the hall, away from the oozes, muttering to himself about his stupid bow.
[OOC: great first roll!]
Nikk waits until he's the last one out, backing into the hall only far enough that he can still see the far wall, behind the nearby oozes.

[DC Dex Save 15 or take 30 damage]
Canti extends her bow and fires two arrows at the nearest ooze and then backs up (25 feet) as instructed.
Attack: 24 Damage: 10
Attack: 20 Damage: 7
Trying again:
Attack: 22 Damage: 10
Attack: 19 Damage: 12

Pisgah sighs and redraws Jaya's Blade as he mutters, "So much for attacking from a distance.", and makes two attacks.
Attack 1: 16 to hit for 8 damage.
Attack 2: 25 to hit for 11 damage
As a BA, Pisgah casts Blade Ward hoping to be able to save his rages.
Ardnek, still grumpling about his bow, decides to use magic, conjuring two blasts, Aiming for O1 and it drops, O2.
Eldritch Blast: 22 Force Damage: 1 + 3 Bludgeoning Damage
Eldritch Blast: 19 Force Damage: 2
[Oh the rolls Ardnek!]
Canti continues firing and backing up.
Attack: 26 Damage: 6
Attack: 27 Damage: 11
