"I wonder if the magic only activates if the subject is living? That may explain the construct serving as a guard. Not that i want to be the one to test it. If we get attacked by something we could bring them back here and test it. In the name of science. If Bwibble could make a poratble contraption that could be huge!. "
"First a giant cube that dissolves bodies, now a light that, 'may' turn bodies into statues? This place is the perfect place to be and assassin!" ArdneK muses.
Assuming it cleared the light, he'll walk over and grab his ball bearing. If it's still in the light, he'll leave it.
ArdneK smiles at Rico "I agree, and I won't. Though it could have been worse. I actually expected worse."
"So this light and these statues are related to the stone creatures over there, judging from the scrapes on the floor, they were moved from/to here. It is probably the source of petrification? Though if the statues have been moved, perhaps this is more of a prison? Maybe the light un-petrifies, if that is a word, or perhaps teleports them to/from this place? I'm not sure, we can try moving one of the statues here, perhaps one of the goats would be managable? I would assume we'll need to deal with this contruct then.
Or, we go see the owlbears?
Or we head out of here to Skullport?"
The small kobold shrugs, as if all those options are equal to himself.
"I don't know if it is a prison or maybe a showcase of trophies, maybe, but I have a hard time figuring out why the goats would be here. Maybe the source of the petrification occurs somewhere else and they just appear here. If we can capture a rat or something to toss into the light, I would try that, otherwise I say let's move on. We can come back later if we want."
"I am with ArdneK though. A big part of me wants to open the door in the west wall and see where it leads. I know there maybe Owlbears there but if I put some rations on a javelin and try feeding them, maybe we can appeal to them from an easy meal? "
OOC: Preyfire, would this be an animal handling check to try and pacify an owlbear(s) with food so they don't eat us?
"Okay, folks, this may be crazy but here is what I would like to try. I want to prep a couple of ration packs to make the dried meat, fruit, and nuts into a kind of cake that I will push across the floor to the Owlbear(s). If someone would be ready to hand me another set of the dried meat, I will try feeding that to the Owlbears from a closer distance. But, before I prep the cakes and open the door, know that this could go south so let me know if you don't even want to try this."
"No issues with the plan" ArdneK says, "who doesn't like a free meal!" He will reach into his pack and pull out some meat and fruit. "I can hand you the second set, I'll be hiding behind you anyway" he says smiling.
Rico will gladly share rations from her pack. It's not as if she eats them anyway, they just came with the pack when she bought a kit, and she's not the type to throw something away if she can find a use for it later. This sounds like a good use :-)
Working with Rico and ArdneK, Pisgah fashions four ration packs into food balls. When those are ready, he will take one in each hand, snug the other two into the crook of arm and elbow of the left arm, and ask Canti to open the door to the Owlbears. When the door is opened, he will try to appeal to the gentle side of the Owlbears and feed them to gain trust.
OOC: I was going to deduct one of mine too and realized the same thing. We did eat when we helped Halleth kill Midna from the food that was in that room and again when we killed Shunn using the supplies he had in his area.
[True about the meals. I'll make sure to mention it forward upon a long rest.]
Pisgah enters the room, immediately laying eyes upon the large furry predators within. The owlbears are busy taking apart a sarcophagus, gnawing on the bones within. The large beaks are snapping the bones with ease.
When they notice the barbarian, they roar, probably in delight at a new food source. Pisgah is quick about delivering them an alternative, calmly presenting the food balls, rolling them in their direction. The beady eyes of the owlbears follow the moving bundles of nourishment for a moment. Then they pounce, gulping down the food with frightening speed.
They are ignoring the party for the moment, but it's clear that they will not be sated by four rations. [Survival] Canti and Pisgah can both estimate that five more rations per owlbear should be enough to get them full enough so they will no longer look for seconds. As it stands, you may have a minute to decide.
As for the room, it is fairly large and contains a dozen elven sarcophagi, all reduced to rubble. Time and neglect have all but destroyed wall carvings that depict elves mounted on elk, parading through a forest as the seasons change around them.
Pisgah lets his backpack swing down to his hand and begins to pull out ration packs. Not bothering with trying to roll the jerky, dried fruit, and other foodstuffs into a ball, he pulls two and tosses them toward the hungry Owlbears. He begins to try speaking soothingly like you would to a hungry dog or bear as he pulls more ration packs from the pack. He will toss these to the Owlbears as well and then begin to close the distance. He will continue to speak to the Owlbears and at the half way point toss two more ration packs. He will repeat that again and close to within 10 feet and toss another ration pack. He will set his pack down and this time will hold a ration pack in each hand as he approaches the two Owlbears, holding out the rations and continuing to hum and speak softly as he tries to get them to calm.
OOC: Not sure how many Animal Handling checks you want. I went with 5 but alter as you deem necessary for the attempt and story.
Canti looks as if she is determined to be brave as she pauses with her hands on the door, waiting for the others to give the word. When they do, she opens the door as quickly as possible. She peers into the room to watch Pisgah attempt to satiate the owlbears with rations. "That's not going to be enough" she says, a little bit of dread coloring the tone of her voice as she sees the size of the creatures. "Do we really think these monsters are going to just let us walk around in there, even if they aren't hungry?" she asks.
ArdneK enters behind Pisgah and attempts to stick to the shadows (stealth 9 nat 1) but steps on a bone, no doubt flung by the hungry owlbears.
He shrugs, with his sword in one hand, after hearing what Canti says, will reach into his bag to grab some rations. "We're committed at this point, let's feed them or were fighting."

Rico states the obvious, "I don't think it wants you to do that again. Unfortunately, I don't speak their language."
ArdneK smiles at Rico "I agree, and I won't. Though it could have been worse. I actually expected worse."

[Yeah, an animal handling check would be appropriate. If you offer food that the owlbears like, you'll have advantage.]

Rico will gladly share rations from her pack. It's not as if she eats them anyway, they just came with the pack when she bought a kit, and she's not the type to throw something away if she can find a use for it later. This sounds like a good use :-)
[No check required for forming the rations, I don't think there is much that can go wrong there.]

Rolling for each food ball....
Animal Handling roll 18
Animal Handling roll 25 (Nat 20)
Animal Handling roll 15

OOC: removed 4 rations from Rico's pack. And realized that we haven't been tracking rations used for meals.

There is an adjoining room to the west.
