“They’ve given us no reason to harm them, I say we keep the truce and leave them here in Ravenloft.” Jaya says. “Forcing them to leave will bring a fight we don’t really need. Plus, I find their presence in this dungeon amusing. If anyone disagrees with me, I’ll back your choice.”
Pisgah: You're not sure if Harrias word is worth all that much, but at the very least she seems to respect your strenght.
Nikkitch: A search of the room turns up not much of note. The bandits and previous adventurers probably scoured the place good and little of value remains. From the construction of the throne, it does strike you that there's enough space for a hidden compartment under the seat. The twin skeleton snakes making up the arm rests give you an uneasy feeling though.
The bandits let you walk around freely in this room, through the door you came from, and the door in the middle of the north wall. They're not willing to let you enter the chambers they came into the room from.
All: I'll treat this as a peaceful resolution and you get the same XP as if you had defeated the bandits: 610 XP
DM Note: Slightly meta and just for your player peace of mind: the two rooms the bandits are occupying are not blocking you from accessing important parts of the dungeon.
"I'm with Jaya on this one. They haven't attacked and Harria has said they will stand aside. I say we head out through the North door and see what sort of death Harria is afraid of."
Pisgah starts heading to the north door, keeping an eye on the group in the corner to make sure no one pulls a weapon.
After the bandits spill into the room, Canti jumps behind the throne to use it as a shield. She readies an arrow, waiting for a fight to break out. But after the female says the throne is trapped, the gnome steps away from it, suddenly more wary of it than the bandits. When it becomes clear there isn't going to be a fight, she returns to the others.
As the group leaves, Rico and Steal will take up the rear position. Rico will be carefully watching the bandits to make sure they don't start something while most of the group is out of the room. This is a situation were a rear guard is definitely called for!
Harria responds to Nikks inquiry with a shrug. "Nothing but disappointment." As your group starts to exit the room, the bandits eye you cautiously, but let you step by without giving you trouble.
Looking through the north door, you are about to step in to a 20 foot wide hallway going both west and east. A great number of life-size granite statues of human warriors, facing inward, stand atop two rows of pedestals that run through the hall. The ceiling of this long hall is 20 feet high, arched, and lightly obscured by thick webs. You see the arrow-riddled corpses of two abnormally large spiders lying against two of the statues.
To your left, you see another room with central pillars and a separate corridor leading north.
To your right, branching away from the the hallway of statues, you see a corridor going south and a wooden door leading to the north. The people with no darkvision and only torches see all of this quite a bit worse.
Nikk's curiosity is aroused, but upon turning and finding himself alone with so many potential victims, he begrudgingly moves on. 'Tis a shame, too. Whatever they were guarding had to have been worth guarding so fiercely. 'Twould be curiosity more than sheer value if he had burned them all, but then his journey with his flesh shields would've likely been cut short. Damn. Damn, damn, damn.
...Upon seeing the hall of statues, however, the kenku's curiosity is renewed. He first and foremost approaches the spiders, cataloging their anatomy. If he were to run into more, he hopes this research might help him discern a weakness to focus on. This group has neither the numbers nor the health pool to just carelessly pummel threats with arrows. Every advantage is needed.
[Passive Investigation for weaknesses]
[Nature roll to determine possible deterrents: 8 (damn)]
Pisgah steps up next to the kenku to examine the spiders. He is looking to see if he is familiar with the creatures or if he can spot any potential weaknesses from the bodies.
Rico continues to focus her attention mostly behind the group, trusting the others to look to the front and sides, and to investigate anything they come across. She's in no hurry, so she is fine waiting for the others to investigate anything that peaks their interest.
Nikk: Putting one and one together, probably a good idea to avoid these beasts within proximity of their webbing, as the fine hairs on their legs would give them an overwhelming advantage. This particular species of spider is unknown to you though.
Pisgah: If memory serves, giant spiders like this are common in the caverns of the underdark, but would feel right at home in dungeon environments.
Jaya (turning that roll into a perception 20): The torchlight illuminates the light webbing in the ceiling. You do see movement there, but it's from many many normal sized spiders crawling around. Squinting, you make out cocoons too, but again, of the normal variety.
A reminder that until one of them burns out, Rico and Steel each have a torch. So if anyone want's to borrow a torch to have a closer look at something, they are welcome to do so.
Turning the spider over, Nikkitch now examines the physical components of the spider. His goal is to find some silk and test its tensile strength, as well as what may best damage said silk, magic-wise. As he does so, he checks to see if its venom sac is intact. If it is, he'll try to extract some venom.
[Again, Passive Investigation to search spider, but for fresh silk and venom sac.]
[Then, Arcana roll to test for magical weakness in silk and spider.]
[Finally, what would I roll to harvest venom, if any?]
DM Note: Enough time has passed for the torches to need replacing, please mark one off for Rico and Steel each (anyone else carrying one? I lost track)
Nikk: You easily find that the webbing around the spiders remains is quite flammable, no arcane knowledge needed. There is not enough remaining for it to be tested for it's strength, as you'd just be ripping the strands apart. To correctly identify the respective organs and extract toxin, Nikk would need to know the biology of the spider (which he doesn't as per previous nature check) and a survival check for the process itself, risking poisoning himself on a failure. He can still try without the knowledge, but the survival check would be with disadvantage.
Pisgah: The hall continues for a long time towards the east. There is statue upon statue, their faces chipped away and defaced, vaguely humanoid forms. You spot a door in the south wall further up and finally a double door at the very end towards the east.
Peering down the branching way towards the south, you see a 50 foot long hallway ending with a door to the west.
Unable to find a better result and satisfied that extracting venom would be far too risky, Nikkitch instead pulls a torch from his pack, lighting it with one of the others' fading torches. With the intent of following the hallway east to search for secrets, he prods the Genasi to get his attention. In Pisgah's own voice, he points east and asks, "Going to. Look. For secrets. Watch. My. Back?"
[I'm just abusing the hell outta this Passive Investigation skill.]
Pisgah tells Nikk, " I'll watch your back but let's not get too far from the others. We need to stay close enough to respond to trouble. Maybe to that door on the south side? "
