The woman waves the question away like an annoying fly. "We have no need for those chambers. Do as you wish with them. If you want to parlay with my lady about serving the interest of the house, you may step inside. If you do not, begone. House Auvryndar shall remember either decision."
The womans eyes blaze down at the kenku, clearly suspicious and annoyed at the mimicry. But she replies, not without a hint of pride in her voice: "I'm Talafaere of the house of Auvryndar. I have orders to turn meddlers like yourself away. The conflict on this level is beyond your ken, for you are on the second and we are on the fourth."
Canti raises her eyebrows, grins, and silently mimics the dark elf, turning her face away from the mirror, "You are on the second, and we are on the fourth." Her cloud of unruly gray hair bounces and her head wobbles.
Talafaere turns to Nikkitch. "Yes, the guild is a nuisance to us. We know that they have posts in the first two levels and are making inroads in the third. Spies and the like." The drows features twist in disgust. "We will not allow them to dig deeper."
To Pisgah, she says, somewhat haughtily. "We are not. Should my lady Thirza so wish, we would have crushed the resistance here. For now, we let the monsters kill each other. Any service you can render successfully would simply accelerate our progress."
She quickly glances at Canti but otherwise ignores her.
Jaya finds Talafaeres general demanor to be haughty but straightforward. There's an undertone of impatience in her voice. As Pisgah steps back, a look of dissatisfaction. She turns away without deigning to reply.
In the same moment, the portal starts closing, one minute after activation. The arch stands still once more.
DM note to Rico: feel free to throw in an additional question if you wish, just in case this interaction passed you by and you would have liked to ask something of Talafaere
Jaya asks the party. “Are we at all interested in entering this gate now and befriending some Drow, or shall we continue where we are? Both sound interesting, but we do have some traitors to find on this level.”
“Should we head back towards the water pump, I think there were other corridors near there, or go talk to the Goblins at the market?”
OOC: Didn't have any questions from Rico, she was leaving dealing with the locals to the locals. Any knowledge about drow she has could be way off the mark here.
Rico comments, "I think it is best to continue where we are now and work our way down to them. I am not in a rush and would rather explore thoroughly along the way. Besides, we were going to help Halleth find his former companions, and they are on this level."
Responding to Nikkitch, and clearly thankful and relieved at the reaffirmation of help from Rico, Halleth offers: "I could stand watch while you rest. Sleep has been a distant memory since the betrayal. I shall be vigilant the entire time."
"If you decide to go with the drow, I wish to remain here. Building such a distance between the Fine Fellows and myself would be excrutiating."
"Well, we need to keep on for a couple more hours before we find a secure place to rest. Let's save the market for last. I suspect things may get a little nasty when Halleth finds his friends. We may have a fight with the goblins on our hands too and need to rest before that big a fight. I say we head to the pump room and take a branch from there."
You're free to spend time at one place until you can long rest. For gameplay's sake, creatures are only going to move around during short rests and long rests. So that's the only time you're at any risk of a random encounter. And of course it then matters how well secured your resting place is.
When spending time like that, you can use any appropriate downtime activities, such as crafting.
Just reiterating this. Don't feel pressured to fill the entire time between long rests with exploring.
OOC: I am good for another fight but will be wiped out after that. We know where there is a room we could secure. I would vote to press on past the pump room. Perhaps the eastern branch of the south corridor?
Canti watches Steel replace the spent torch and frowns. "How are we doing on torches? Are we going to run out? Should we be making more when we find pieces of wood?"
"We should be okay on torches, at least for a little while. I have 20 of them shoved in my pack and we can probably improvise some out of the broken furniture and crates we have come across. When we take a rest and I can dig them out of my backpack, you can have Steel take as many as you may need. Let's head on out for now and keep poking around for a couple more hours before come back to the puppet room for a rest. "
Pisgah begins making his way to the pump room and will take the east corridor.
OOC: how much game time has elapsed since we came down from the Yawning Portal?
Time: After the conversation with the drow, it's been around 6 hours. Anyone using a torch, please mark off another use.
Marked off another touch from Steel's backpack. He's gone though half his torches at this point. Can Rico make more torches with the material she's recovered so far?

The woman's own voice perks up once more from the kenku.
"And. Are. You. Aware. Of. Xanather's Guild's. Movements? They're. Only. Here. So. Far. But. There's. No. Telling. How. Deep. Their. Influence. Goes."

"Lady Talafaere, are your forces in dire need of assistance? "
Talafaere turns to Nikkitch. "Yes, the guild is a nuisance to us. We know that they have posts in the first two levels and are making inroads in the third. Spies and the like." The drows features twist in disgust. "We will not allow them to dig deeper."

Do I generally believe what she is saying? Insight: 11
"Lady Talafaere, if we are not urgently needed, we will attend to our business here but will assist when we reach you."
Pisgah gives another short bow and steps back from the mirror.

The only problem with the market is Copper is there. Don't know how the goblins will react if Halleth kills him.
"I. Have. Little. Magic. Left. Do we. Want to. Go. Deeper. Without. Preparing?" The wizard uses Rico's voice for this logic.
