Calim nods understanding and, like last time, finds a corner of the chamber to settle into. He leans against the wall, props his shield at a convincing angle and wills himself to look like a pile of supplies.
Survival 16 (12+4)
"I'll watch your flank while you investigate." Allowing his eyes to adjust to the twilight sinking down into the hole, Calim remains alert and readies himself for any foreseeable action.
If anything odd walks by, Calim will be ready to attack it from the rear. That is...if his clever camouflage works.
Kneecap goes up to the door with the symbols to give it a look. However, he forgets about the trap Calim set. Yes, the one he just mentioned and laughed at, setting it off.
A bit embarrassed, he say “Bah. Anyone want to look at the door? If not let’s go check out those stairs!”
Sabina laughs as Kneepcap runs into the trap. "Oh, I see! Very deadly." She glances at the door then peers off into the westward passage. "The stairs go up?" she asks. "I guess we go that way as Calim suggested. Though I'm very curious about the door." Her eyes shift back towards the stone door and its carvings and cavities. "I presume it's locked? But you guys think you have a way to open it?"
Calim remains unmoving in his camouflaged state. Just the littlest bit frustrated with Kneecap's mishandling of his trap. He waits for the all clear from the scouts.
"Well, since that door is stone, guess that's not going to work," Sabina says to Volneer. She then turns to Kneecap, motioning towards the passage that leads to the stairs. "On to the stairs? Perhaps we'll find more for the door further on."
(OOC - I think we're clearly heading for the stairs now?)
Larrind remarks, as the party heads down the hall "Creepy in here... Hey miss, what do you mean "More for the door"? you think theres a key?" as he walks, he has a firm grip on the shortsword at his waist. going the full length of the hall, the party meets stone stairs leading up 10 feet, to a trap door set in the ceiling of this sunken temple.
Heres a map for reference, in your next post just let me know everyones marching order or where you're located on the map. I will assume everyone is at the end of the west call, except for Callim who is hiding in the temple room.
Once they have left the area, Calim takes just a moment to rework his signal trap. A shiver travels down his spine thinking about what it would mean if something, whatever it is, from behind this door might come upon them from the rear.
Survival 13 (9+4) - efficacy of trap
He resets his placement on watch, this time closer to where Sabina had been, tucked a bit under the westernmost log sunken into the pit.
Kneecap says "woah, stairs up to a trapdoor, it's like Im back on a ship, hmm, i'll take a look, and then let you all take a gander, before we open it." he takes two steps up the stairs and stops, turns around , "Larrind, did you tell Calim we were leaving?"
Kneecap says...
If Calim is with us, "Oh nevermind."
If Calim is not, "For heavens sake Larrind, go get our smithy! He's in one of the corners hiding, if you can't find him, just whisper his name, tell him we're on the move. We need him, he is key."
Checking the stairs, and then the door if stairs seem safe:
Calim's senses are live and he hears the whisper before seeing his friend. He follows, trying his best to keep down the clamor of his heavy armor.
Stealth 4 (5-1) w/DIS
He can't seem to quiet the bits of plate and the ungainly shield. Grateful to have made the length of the hallway, Calim find his friends hovering around the trapdoor.
"Let's see how these parts were put together..." Calim lights a torch and attempts a thorough investigation of the workmanship of the trapdoor, hoping to find a weakness to exploit. In the back of his head he has a buzzy fly of a thought, "Surely they have tried to just open it already...surely. They must have called me because it needs dismantling."
16 Insight (14+2) on Hardware (with my advantage)
Calim tries to imagine a way to disassemble the hardware on this trapdoor as efficiently and quietly as possible to make a stealthy entrance. His tongue is sticking out while he thinks.
As Callim sizes up the trapdoor, he notes that this construction has to have been built years... maybe decades ago. The wood that makes up the majority of the trap door is (DC10) rough sawn *green wood that is covered in a small layer of all manner of moss, mildew, dirt that seem to be caked in-between the boards as well. feeling the structure of the boards, Callim notes (DC15) that they are impeccably well preserved for how old they are. It is evident that they have been treated to withstand against the elements, but in a very primitive way... Callim suspects they have been coated in boiled sap, or some other oil. As for the hardware, there is none. the boards are woven together with various lengths and sizes of rope, also in various states of decay. a small shove proves no movement, as it stays, unmoved in the ceiling.
*Green wood is a trade term used by crafters familiar with woodworking that indicates wood that has not had the proper time to dry out into usable lumber. during its manufacture, the lumber was freshly sawn.
As they had walked towards the stair, Sabina had responded to Larrind. "Yea, I think Volneer said that 'x' symbol they had found might fit into the stone door to unlock it. I'd presume we need to find the other pieces. Remember those little recesses in the door? So it's not a standard sort of key, but yea, a type of key!"
Once they reach the trap door and Calim sizes it up, she notes that it doesn't budge with his small shove. "Is it stuck?" she asks. "Or does it just need a little bit more force?" Keeping behind Calim, she examines around the area to see how it might open. (Investigation: 25)
“Well of course it does, hahaha” he says when Sabina mentions it. Kneecap will go up the stairs and try to push open the trap door. "Oh, nothing happened when we tried the X in the door he adds."
With the guidance of marthammor himself, Kneecap kindly excuses himself around his team mates and nestles himself tightly between the final few steps below, and the trap door above him. With two feet and two hands planted, the stout dwarf engages his full strength in almost effortless form, driving up the trapdoor— and as it lifts, compacted soil and brush begin to give way and spill into the hall; almost an alarming amount before it subsides and moonlight peaks through. Kneecap now has a view from a secret entrance into the sunken temple. A view of which overlooks a woodsy hillside that slopes downward drastically as it descends down 100 or so feet, to a pond that sparkles against the moonlight.
Once they had exited through the trap door, Sabina looks around a bit. "What a beautiful location," she says. "But I was expecting the stair to lead to something more to explore. Do we need to go back and try to open that stone door?" She will however try and see if there might be anything here near at hand to explore. (Perception: 15)
You all have successfully made it into the room. The torch remains unlit, and the room unchanged. Let me know your next moves!

Unless someone (including DM) has something to add, let's go to the stairs, its the only other place we haven't explored.
