Smudge pops out from under the dead scorpion to aim at the red dragon and then quickly ducks back down again. He is not certain if the beast provides him any protection but has not read any books that say confronting a dragon in the open is a good idea so continues to use it as cover. However, he does not hear the desired crack or sizzle of a successful attack. cast Guiding Bolt, lv 2, attack 2+7=9

You can use it for cover in this circumstance. Much like you could a boulder. Alas the Bolt went wide and missed the beast.

“What’s the matter, lobster?” Darbakh asks sarcastically while swinging left and right at the dragon. “The graceless dragon led us here, wouldn’t you be so kind as to lead us out?“

The young dragon thought he could handle the likes of the adventurers. They were well prepared for the fantastic beast. But wait, is there more to the story?
The gold dragon appears near smudge, “Well done adventurers. I have additional task should you wish to earn a bit more coin and a bauble or two?”

walking over to the group. “Wow a real live, dead dragon. Never would I have thought I’d see one; much less have it attack and survive to talk about it.”
“greetings (insert name of gold dragon i forgot in real life) , care to tell us about why this dragon is hunting us , and by extension, you? I think we might be interested in additional compensation for additional work, what did you have in mine for us dispatching this disgruntled wyrm? And what interesting encounters might we find ourselves in if we continue down this path with you? “

Pramend laughs a bit, "Greetings kind dwarf. Well...This forest is a challenge even for one such as me. I have 4 more task for you to deal with that fall within my territory of sorts. The I will grant each of you a special item should survive the series of tasks ahead of you. I will mentally send you my thoughts.
See pm(s)...grin.
These task well even I cannot see these, but I can set you on the path to ensure you get to the right spots.
I understand if you are not brave enough to seek them out.
The choice is your though. What say you?"

Darbakh looks nervous. His bravado when facing the hostile red dragon disappears when the group faces the friendly gold dragon. For some reason, even Runok looks uncomfortable with Pramend despite the gold dragon treating them all with respect.
However, Darbakh’s greed overrides his strange discomfort. “Lads, I think this might be a good deal,” he says to Smudge, Petnan, and Ral.
I would suggest that Lars is in front about 30 -60 feet in front of us and invisible and is about 10-15 feet off ground every couple of min he then flys back on one side to end to ensure nothing is following us then back to front on the other side
If allowed, when we find a clearing Lars scouts the perimeter and about 20-30 feet into the other sides
Petnan hopefully able to add some aid with Eldritch blasts
Modified 25 to hit for 10 damage
and modified 24 for 4 damage
Two beams streak out from the darkness with eerie precision both strike the Dragon, and it swivels its head toward the darkness.

“Also. How do dragons cast magic? Is it innate? Or do you have spell books, scrolls, or magic items and what not?

The party gather enough dragon scales to make a suit of fire resistance armor for each of them once they get back to civilization.
The party finishes up with the dragon and get a long rest in... Update sheets as needed.
I'll get this going but leave room for stuff if needed.
The next day you take off and you are heading West along a path, and it seems fairly wooded.
Give me any specific information on any marching orders and familiar locations and distances. How far apart are the PCs and familiars.
