Octo has seen Kallith turn into a squirrel before, but it was in the thick of battle with undead all around them. Seeing the transformation into a rat happen right in front of him was impressive, and totally spooky. But once he realized why the Firbolg did it, to spy, Octo was quite impressed.
Octo tried to watch rat Kallith, but it was no easy task. She crawled, quite fast, into, behind, and above anything that got in her way.
“Are you watching this?” Octo said turning to Dornin, and then just shook his head once again at Captain Dornin who stood before him. “It’s getting hard to keep track of who is who. Now go find the girl, I’ll wait here, watching...”
Octo watches Captain Dornin as he gets to the ship and introduces himself. He keeps Sparks out of sight below the railing, knowing that the next few minutes may be crucial.
“Get ready” he says to Chandle, “though I’m not sure for what. Let’s hope for nothing.”
Octo keeps an eye on them both.
perception: 7, 11 (rolling twice for advantage, disadvantage, in case its appropriate). OOC: probably not with those rolls ha!
Dornin thinks for a moment on how to play this through knowing how crucial this moment may be. He addresses the captain of the Valiant, “Y’know me Cap’n, gold is just something to get rid of. My wealth comes from the adventure!” He looks to the cloaked assassin, showing a face of sternness even though underneath this illusion Dornin is sweating from nerves. “With all due respect sir, them fellas came for us for a promise of gold just like any of us. They’ve shown themselves great bodies on the ‘Folly. Just one of ‘em is worth about 3-4 of me old crew! If you kill ‘em, yer killin’ my chances at settin sail anytime soon! Trust me, they’re just mercs, just like any of us.” (Persuasion: 16)
The Assassin addresses the Captain of the Valiant briefly "Just two three days, we will be back Captain" Once finished he turns his youthful gaze back to Captain Dornin, cold calculation and a holy fervor glimmers in his eye.
"A man who turns his back on duty for the sake of a few coins is not worth much at all Captain. Did you find who their benefactor was?" He strides toward a ramp leading down to the main dock. "Let us go speak with the Mercs of yours and find out shall we, I am most interested in who set them upon our trail" A subtly cruel smile upon the young mans lips can be seen from within the shadows of his hood, You feel this man would love nothing more than to 'talk' with the Minotaur
Kalliths nose swivels desperately from the captain to the assassin as the latter turns to move towards the Folly. She would have liked to stay and snoop around a bit more, but it seemed like the situation was about to escalate.
Stowing the information she has learned for later, the rat scurries away, at once almost getting tapled by feet overhead, dashing through an empty barrel, knocking over a bucket, making a mess. The druid heads for the Folly as fast as she can, trying to get there to warn the others.
Sqeaking, the hairy rat hops over the ramp back on deck, gesticulating with its tiny arms towards the disguised Dornin and the Captain of the Valiant.
Kallith doesn't yet transform back, waiting for an opportune moment. She hides in Octos shadow.
Octo watches "Captain Dornin" interact on the other ship. He loses sight of Kallith, amazed at how many rats there are on ships, once you start looking for them.
“Chandle, they are coming this way, I think. Dornin, I mean Captain Dornin, and one who looks like the assassins that got away from us back at the farm. I will wait here and see what happens, but I fear that there maybe some intricate lie going on.” He looks at Chandle, “I’m not good with lies, and I’m not good with intricate. … I’m good with Sparks” but he keeps his axe down low, out of view.
“If you have any ideas now's the time, you’re much better at that than me. If not, stand behind me if it comes to blows. ... Far behind me.”
Octo continues to watch them coming.
“Where is Molly? Though not knowing where she is maybe for the best” and he laughs his deep minotaur laugh. "That one is a ..."
He utters to himself in the minotaur language...
LOON! But her power can not be ignored. But where she points that power, I, no we, need to watch.
The assassin, Captain Dornin in tow, makes his way to the deck of the Sirens Folly. As he climbs aboard he looks around at the empty ship, trying to ascertain just how many are on board, judging the details of the scene before him. With Only Octo visible aboard and no damage from the terrible conflict you had to overcome the actual Captain he looks to Captain Dornin with some skepticism. "You said a few of them joined you, all I see is a Minotaur, where are the others" He regards Captain Dornin critically for a moment, you can feel the weight of judgement in his eyes.
"You, cow" he says abruptly looking at Octo, "You came to the ranch with others, where are they now? Who paid you to seek the girl?"
Chandler sets down her bow and quietly revels herself standing up, “I’m also here. What are you talking about? The girl who was kidnapped? We just responded to the situation.”
Kallith watches all this as a rat, unsure of what to do, hoping that this could be solved peacefully. She pokes out from behind a barrel, her whiskers trembling. Surely there was some local rule that would prevent actual bloodshed. But then again, this seemed like just the hive of scum and villainy that would be open to this sort of thing.
Octo knows this man is dangerous, as is the situation, but the man’s arrogance and obvious contempt of others is enough for Octo to throw caution to the wind.
He responds in a mocking tone, attempting to mimic the man.
“You came to the ranch with others, where are they now? Oh yeah, they are dead. No doubt being punished for all eternity by your God for their failure.”
He continues, not really expecting an answer, “Why do you seek this girl?”
Captain Dornin looks around cautiously, especially now with tensions growing and anger bellowing. From behind the assassin, he shouts to Octo and Chandle. “You all better watch yer tone! Do you know to yer talkin’ to?! That’s fifteen percent off your take now! Keep it up and I’ll make it thirty!” When the assassin isn’t looking, he gives a subtle wink. “I will be the first to apologize of behalf of my idiot crew, they really should stick to hoisting sails instead of speaking. I suggest taking this conversation somewhere more private, out of earshot from those who wish to charter on our business. May we take this under deck or my office?”
The young man, bluster and arrogance watch's Chandle rise from hiding, a sneer on his face at her appearance. Chandle is not sure if it is because he did, or didn't know she was there. At her words he simply scoffs. "And by that reasoning little whelp you just happened to follow us and stumbled upon this den of depravity."
His attention returns to Octo, anger, disbelief, incredulous at the Minotaur's statements. His words spitting out with sharp venom. "You insolent cur. You unlicked cub. They were my brethren, my brothers." His hand twitches, so slight a move yet so telling. He gains a hold of himself, and smiles. "Myrkul will take your soul, in the dark, when he is ready".
The man doesn't turn, his eyes look to the side, his head tilted just slightly as Captain Dornin speaks. He listens. His eyes, his side eyes look back and forth between Octo and Chandle on one side, Captain Dornin over his shoulder on the other. His voice comes out very calm, low, and slow. "Somewhere private, where you and I may talk. Is that what you are suggesting Captain. Are you in on this affair? Do you know who paid these..." Looking directly at Chandle, "Hero's of circumstance?"
"No, I think right here, right now is just fine." he scans between Octo and Chandle again, his eyes predatory. "Which one of you, will tell me what I want to know, hmm...you" gesturing at Chandle. "You" he points to Octo. "Ok then, which one of you wants to feel my knife first, the salvation of Myrkul will bring bliss and meaning to your lives." His hand caress the hilt of a dagger like a lover would, his fingers so light, so slow brushing past. He takes a slow menacing half stride towards Octo and Chandle, intent and intimidation, "Who promised to pay you on her safe return?"
Dornin's frustration grows inside of him, his disgust showing even on his disguised self. As the tension grows, he knows he must act or there may be a fight on our hands. They need him alive to tell them about the Isbiel, so in this fast moments he comes up with a plan.
Captain Dornin speaks to the assassin "I believe now is the perfect time to lay our cards down on the table, shall we?" Dornin dismisses his Captains disguise and speaks in a tone of fearless authority to the assassin. " You speak as someone who is a wolf amongst sheep not realizing you have just stepped foot into a lions den. You are surrounded and out-numbered." Dornin places his hand on his tome casting Suggestion on the assassin "I suggest you surrender our weapons and gear and go bellow deck into the cage and get some rest, you look so very tired."
Dornin keeps a hand on his book in case he needs to make a safe getaway.
(Suggestion: Wis:13 or is charmed. Dornin also readies an action to cast Misty Step away if the assassin attempts to attack at him)
Kallith scurries out from her hiding place, taking the cue from Dornin.
She grows back into her firbolg shape, in one smooth motion assuming full height and leisurely gripping her staff. If this got ugly, she would need to be able to protect her friends. And if Dornin words had any chance of finding purchase, her presence would give them weight.
Chandle reaches down and picks up her short bow and arrow a sly smile on her face looking at Captain Dornin with great respect. She re-readies her weapon…
The Assassin turns slowly when Captain Dornin begins to speak. As the illusion of the Captain morphs and changes back to Half-elf Dornin a dagger appears in the assassins hands, quicker than a blink in time....
Wisdom save: 2
He smiles and hands it to the Warlock, his bandoleer is quickly unbuckled, tumbling to the floor. "I am exhausted, that sounds like a great idea. Show me where this cage is, we can continue after I have taken a nap" He follows Dornin into the hold and lies down where directed. A gentle snore is soon to be heard. The man looks quiet, peaceful.
A loud crack reverberates through the cavern, followed quickly by another. The sound of wood rending, stone ripping itself apart. Screams and hollers of panic erupt from the main dock as one of the buildings begins to sag. A hundred people if not more were loitering in the area, an impromptu party of dance and song turns to fear and chaos. Rapscallions begin running from the area, the second and third story balconies are filled with half dressed or completely naked men and woman. Within seconds the main dock rips free from the stone wall, crashing into the lagoon. Supports crack, the two floors above sagging precariously.
A large wave crests from the sinking building heaving the Sirens folly as it passes. A half dozen floating eyes zip from elsewhere to descend upon the scene. The rogues of this hidden town scramble to get away, ther numbers thinned. Bodies float in the drink, blood staining the previously peaceful waves.
Kallith is very relieved when Dornins argument is taken so well by the assassin. Then she realizes that the warlock had used a mind-altering spell on the man. She felt very conflicted about this. Making people do ones bidding against their will with the help of magic was considered a taboo where she came from. And she wholeheartedly agreed with that sentiment.
When the man had moved to the cage in the ships hold, Kallith turns to Dornin. 'I can't not say anything.', she thinks.
"Brother, about the spell you cast -"
In that moment, all hell breaks loose dockside. Kallith gawps at the destruction, then hurries to the ships side that is facing the river. People were drowing, dying! If she finds ropes lying around on the dock, she grabs it and ties it to the side. She will supplement this with the hempen rope from her backpack, fastening it equally. Then she throws all of them overboard like fishing lines, as a way for people to hold on before they are swept away. If she sees wounded people, she uses Iallanis blessing to help them, four times via healing word, three times via balm of the summer court (1d6+3 temp hp).
