CQ chooses the bedroom and opens the door. This web-filled room contains a slender bed, a nightstand, a rocking chair, an empty wardrobe, and a small iron stove. After looking around it just seemed to be another unused bedroom, maybe a guest room or unused servant bedroom.
The party move to the opposite door and open it. This dusty chamber is packed with lumpy, squat shapes draped in dusty white sheets. An old iron stove stands against the right-side wall, next to what looks to be a large trunk covered by a sheet. From studying the dollhouse Asha knows there is a secret door in the north wall leading to a circular staircase that leads to the basement.
CQ moves to the trunk and removes the sheet. She inspects the chest for traps and believes there are none. As she opens the chest she is hit with a terrible smell. Inside the chest is the nursemaid’s corpse, with wounds consistent with those seen on the spirit’s body in the mirror in the nursemaid’s suite.
CQ feels a cold breath on her shoulder and the unshakeable sense of being watched. She looks around, and notes one of the shapes up against the wall is likely covering a mirror so she goes over there and uncovers it. CQ can see an apparition of Elisabeth Durst within the mirror staring at her with cold fury. Once observed, the apparition swiftly vanishes.
Meanwhile, Danu goes back to the ghost children, and asks Rose if it is possible for her to possess a doll instead. Rose assures her she cannot, only living beings.
While in the children's room, Danu remembers talk of Rose's diary, so she goes over to Rose's dusty, cobwebby bed and finds the diary hidden in the pillowcase. The halfling displaces a lot of dust and sneezes as she opens the diary. As well as three spells - none of which Danu can read - Rose’s aged and faded diary also contains entries regarding her studies, her friends, her younger brother, her nursemaid (“Miss Klara”), and arguments between her mother and father. (Rose doesn't know anything about the content of those fights.)
"The spells are mending, light, and shocking grasp," says Rose, helpfully, seeing Danu was struggling with understanding them.
"Does anyone want to read this diary?" asks Danu. She doesn't get a reply, and Danu suddenly realises that she is alone with two ghosts in a room who want to possess her and no one can hear her. She thinks Einnob would be rolling her eyes hard right now.
However the ghosts make no move on her and just regard her with sad eyes.
Danu leaves the ghosts and goes and joins the others in the storage room. They've examined all the furniture under the dust protectors and found nothing of value or interest.
"So we cleared the floor? Do we go deal with this potential pissed off knight?" asks CQ, referring to the suggestion that one of the suits of armour activates every hour. Everyone listens but hears nothing other than the constant creaking of the house.
"I'll go check!" says Eiinob, and dashes off, looking excited.
"We'll go help her if we hear anything," says Asha.
"Should we rest for a bit?" asks CQ. "I guess we have to figure out what to do with these kids, do we let them 'piggy back' us?"
Zap replies "we can do what they want without piggy backing us from what I understand? We can take their bones to the crypt once we go down."
"I think the issue is they need to go with their bones and can't otherwise leave the floor?" suggests Danu. "I'm also curious about the other groups of people that came through here, how did they end up here?"
"Hmm," ponders Zap. "Perhaps we should clear downstairs first then give them a piggy back as it seems to be a liability mid fight to potentially not have control."
"I wonder if Rose was piggy backing if she could do her spells?" says Danu.
"She should be able to I imagine but sure let's ask. Only way to find out!" answers Zap. Then he thinks. "Safest way to find out," he corrects himself.
Then Einnob returns, looking disappointed. "Nope, nothing. Either the idea that the striking of the clock on the hour animates a suit of armour was wrong, or splitting up the armour and stashing it in different rooms stopped it from happening. I really want to hit something, this house is getting on my nerves!"
They all head off to the children's bedroom to ask questions about possession, and about the other visitors - possible other adventuring parties.
In the children's bedroom the party put their questions to Rose who listens with a look of hope on her face. Thorn, as usual, hides behind Rose, peeking out at the party.
Rose says that she thinks she should be able to cast her spells while possessing someone if need be, but she's never done it so she is unsure.
When Danu asks about the other people, Rose replies that every now and then - she's not able to give a time estimate - people appear, usually groups of 3 or more, all dressed like..she points at you all. Some speak foreign languages, most speak common. Some don't make it past the black armour. Some die of starvation, never finding the secret doors. The bodies of the dead must disappear as no one has mentioned finding them. Some visitors make it to the basement and there is usually some kind of fight.
Sometimes something unusual happens, Rose thinks it might be when the visitors kill whatever is in the basement - the house turns into a trap and tries to kill the visitors before they can escape. Rose hears them yelling to get out and hurry hurry!. She thinks most get out, but some have their voices cut off in mid scream.
One time the visitors burned the house down after they killed the monster. But the house always rebuilds itself, no matter what damage, and it all starts again.
Einnob says "You could have bargained all that information in exchange for allowing you to possess us. You could have tried to possess Danu when you had her here when she came on her own." The dwarf looks at Danu and deliberately stares at her. Danu ignores her.
Rose smiles sadly. "That would be wrong. I don't want to force someone to do something like that. Miss Klara taught us to do the right thing, even when no one is watching. Mama taught us to be strong, and Papa taught us to be kind."
The party decides to take a short rest in Rose and Thorn's room. They bind wounds, rest, reflect on their experiences. Part way through the rest they hear the grandfather clock strike 9 o'clock.
DM: Party gains 250xp for clearing the four levels of the house. That should put everyone to 2nd level. Spend up to 2 hit dice healing if you wish.
During the short rest CQ asks Rose "Where are your parents and Miss Klara currently? What are they up to and is there anything we should know before heading in to the basement?"
Rose responds that she doesn't know. Her dad and Klara went away, her mother told her. It was after that she and Thorn started getting locked in their room each night. Then..as she has said.. one night her mother never came back to unlock her and Thorn. It was after that things got strange in the house. Then Rose and Thorn passed away, but found their spirits trapped here. And then there were noises - fighting, screaming, yelling. Sometimes people came to the door and either bashed it open, or unlocked it. Sometimes the people would talk to Rose and Thorn and sometimes they tried to attack them. Rose and Thorn just disappeared when that happened.
Danu asks Rose "Do you know anything about the man her mother was writing to? Who may have come to the house?"
Rose doesn't know anything about mother writing to him, she could have, but she remembers someone coming to the house, a tall man with pale skin and strange eyes. Rose says her mother and her friends were acting like he was really important, bowing and polite. They'd never seen her mother behave like that before. This was the same night that they were locked in their room and mother never came back.
That night, locked in their room, Rose and Thorn heard the man's powerful voice, he said "You killed Tatyana!" He sounded upset. Then every door in the house slammed shut, the children could hear that clearly. And then there were some shouts from the man, and muffled screaming. And then.. nothing.
Rose thinks, her finger on her ghostly chin. "Most people in my land are reincarnated souls. Spirits and souls cannot leave Barovia. So they wait to be reborn. I will be reborn when I am let go. It might take a while. I know this because I am a spirit. You said the nanny? Maybe Tatyana was a person whose spirit was reborn into Miss Klara. And the man recognised her."
Rose thinks harder, her brow furrowing. "But.. that would be strange, because Mama said Miss Klara was away. I... don't want to think about what this might mean. But you said.. the nanny.. so she was here. And the man said she was dead."
"Do you know why or how the house is moving through the earth, Rose?" asks Danu.
"It always does that when someone new comes into the house," Rose replies.
"Does it come out of the ground somewhere?"
"In Barovia! My home! We used to live in Barovia village...but.. the house doesn't appear there anymore. I'm not sure where it appears, but based on what we can see from the window, we don't recognise where we are."
Danu and the others look at the window, which is bricked up.
Rose shrugs. "We're ghosts, we can stick our head through but not go any further."
"Any ideas why these trinkets we possess guided us here?" asks CQ to the group in general.
Einnob says "Maybe some other power wants us to succeed where others have failed? That would be good. Or..more likely..it's all part of the plan to get fresh meat into Barovia.. if we die in this house then we're not good enough to face what lies beyond after we get out."
Danu thinks about what Rose has said. "So basically the house takes us to Barovia, where souls never escape."
Zap looks distant. The sounds of the room fade away. He hears two voices talking, but it seems no one else can. He hears a pleading female voice in his right ear that swears that “it isn’t his.” Another, colder female voice in the Zap's left ear scoffs and says, "You would say that, you little harlot!" The voices fade and Zap hears the sounds of the room come back to him.
During the short rest CQ also asks Rose about the trinkets they all have. Rose seems eager to engage, as if this is the most conversation she's ever had with visitors to Death House, and maybe it is.
Rose and Thorn look at CQ's amber shard amulet and say it similar to one they saw their mother wear sometimes.
When Danu shows them her stone crest, Rose says they have seen that design before, on some very old shrines beside the road between Barovia Village and another town called Vallaki. The shrines might be elsewhere but she has only ever been on that road. Her father said they were very old, and were here before "the Devil". Rose and Thorn's mother did not like their father talking about it and shushed him.
Rose doesn't know anything about Einnob's dragon scale, or Asha's golden-white feather. When Zap shows his black feather Rose says it's a raven feather. She went on to say that Ravens have a reputation in Barovia of not being subject to the will of the one they call "the Devil" and that it is bad luck to kill one. But her Mama did not like ravens, and called them "spies" whenever she saw them but not say who they spied for. Rose heard stories that wolves, rats, and bats are connected to and are, at least sometimes, controlled by "the Devil". Rose liked ravens; they were intelligent and curious - which is why maybe mama called them spies - and they sometimes came to their window and tapped on the glass with their beaks - before the window was bricked up.
"Hmm, so Ravens are good," says Danu. "Well shall we do this thing? I don't know what being possessed will do to me but if I faint, I'm easy to carry. Rose, you can ride with me!"
Rose gives a squee of joy and walks towards Danu and for a brief second they occupy the same space. Then Rose disappears. Thorn looks panicked, and looks to see who will accept him.
Zap steps forward. "Jump on board Thorn!"
Thorn hesitates at first, then, encouraged by Zap, jumps into him.
Danu and Zap can feel the sense of another being's presence within their body, perceived as a subtle pressure or weight. They also feel cold.
Zap feels an unexpected sense of anxiety and wonders what's wrong, until he realises he is experiencing Thorn's emotion. "Whew," the dragonborn sorcerer laughs. "It's Thorn! I thought maybe it was that spicy chicken I ate at the festival. Should we head downstairs?"
With everyone rested, wounds bound, taken a breather, and with Rose and Thorn possessing but not controlling two of the characters, Dead Pretty are ready to head down into the basement.
They leave Rose and Thorn's room, Einnob gently picks up the bones of the children and puts them in a side part of her pack. She hesitates, then grabs Thorn's stuffed toy and puts it in as well.
They go into the storeroom and Asha opens up the secret door which reveals a narrow spiral staircase built of aged-looking wood within a tight shaft of mortared stone. Thick cobwebs fill the staircase as it descends into the darkness below.
There's some arguing about the order, the stairs don't look that safe. In the end CQ goes first, followed by Einnob, then Danu who casts her light cantrip to illuminate the way, then Asha, and Zap brings up the rear.
The broken cobwebs around you sway like a gossamer wedding veil, beckoning you forward as the ancient stairs creak and groan underfoot. The gaping maw of the stairwell draws you deeper, swallowing you up as you descend further down its gullet. You descend one floor—two floors—three.
The walls of the stone shaft narrow around you, forcing you to hunch your shoulders and pull in your elbows to continue downward. In the darkness, you can only hear the shuffle of your feet, the choking groan of the stairs, and the pounding of your blood in your ears.
Finally, after what feels like hours, the descent levels out, and the spiral staircase ends at a darkened landing of packed earth. A narrow tunnel supported by aged timber braces stretches ahead of you, its stone walls seeming to bleed with deposits of streaked, red clay. Eight feet ahead, the tunnel splits, branching to the left and right.
As your eyes and ears adjust to the cold, subterranean corridor, you notice that the tunnel isn't as silent as the staircase above. An eerie, low-pitched sound echoes through the space—and you soon recognize it as a deep, incessant chanting.
CQ moves forward and looks around the corner, looking south that seems to lead into a room. The other way has entrances and the northern corridor turns west. CQ decides to start at the boundaries of the map and work inwards. She leads Einnob to where the north corridor turns west and finds there are stone stairs leading down into a room with a table. Beckoning the others to follow she and Einnob move down into the room.
A wooden table and four chairs stand at the east end of this room. To the west are four alcoves containing moldy straw pallets.
The party move into the room, CQ looks down the other exit which seems to turn south and has stairs going down.
Asha moves around the room, assessing. (Rolls a 17 on perception)
Having a quick walk around nothing catches Asha's eye. Looking at the poor quality furniture and bedding she concludes this was just a room for the cultists or maybe the victims. It would be unlikely anything of value would be here.
