(The Young Bucks Tavern in the town of Calla is a place like many others. On this early evening, the Tavern is only about half full of your usual tradesmen, farmers and assorted other townspeople. Everyone is drinking and eating and generally having a good time. A young Half-Elf serving boy, Jack, floats around bringing everyone their food and ale.
The door opens and a young female Tiefling enters. She appears to be a Bard of some sort, wearing leather armor and carrying a Lute across her back. The Tiefling looks around, finds what she is looking for and walks over to the table where a motley crew of adventurers sit, staring at her intently as she silently pulls up a chair and takes a seat. The table has a sign on it that reads ‘1st time adventurers meet here’.)
"Ah, splendid! It looks like you all made it!"
(The tavern owner, a rotund and jolly-looking fellow of about 40, appears at the side of the table, smiling and holding what appears to be an envelope.)
"My name is Willfred, I am the owner of this fine establishment. Glad you all could make it. Your mutual friend has asked me to read this to you when you all arrived."
(He now opens it and takes out the enclosed letter. Unfolding it, he begins to read.)
Greetings, adventurers!
It is I, Craig, your friendly neighborhood shop keeper! You are all here because you all expressed interest in teaming up with other like-minded folks and going on adventures. I had all of your names on my LIST and I think all of you would be a good fit together. I hope I am correct. Take some time to get to know each other; I’m sure you’ll all become fast friends. Go forth and make your mark on the world!
Best of Luck!
Craig
(The assembled adventurers look around the table at each other. Willfred takes a little bow as he backs away.)
"Oh, this IS a good-looking group. You'll do well, very well indeed. Please let me know if I can be of any assistance to you."
(The crew looks each other over and sits for a few moments, until one of them rises up and begins to speak...)
DM's Notes: Ok, folks, go ahead and introduce your character to each other and give a brief description about your appearance, etc. No need to give your whole backstory, just introduce your character as they would introduce themselves. Looking forward to this! :)
Jubilee stand up and bows her head in acknowledgment to group. Her hand resting on one of the two handaxes holstered in a belt around her waist.
“Hello, I am Jubilee, a barbarian come to try my hand at an adventure.”
Standing at 6’2, tan from the sun, and her long black hair kept in a tight braid to keep it out of her face. It feels like she hasn’t laughed in a long time and could use some help remembering what it was like to enjoy herself. Her grey eyes meet each of the party members at the table before sitting back down.
Roarke, last to the table, turns her chair around to sit on it backwards and raises her left hand to flag down the server. After confirming a round for the table, she looks at the group and in a southern lilt says, “Y’all are my tickets to a pay day, and if I’m lucky, maybe some new stories I can write a song about. I’m Roarke, but just call me Rori— I’ve got your backs if you’ve got mine.”
Arms resting on the back of the chair in front of her and twisting a piece of gold between her lavendar fingers, the 5’9” tiefling sports a floor length black duster obscurring most of her figure. Shoulder length black wavy hair– half tied up in the back– expose a set of light gray horns that protrude from the front of her forehead that wind toward the crown of her head. With a slightly cocked head, her gold eyes assess her new companions and a purple tail swishes in curiosity under the chair.
A half-elf Druid in a hooded cloak rises to his full 6'3". Taller an sturdier than most elves or humans, his blue eyes peering out through his thick red beard convey a sense of gentleness and sadness.
Greetings my comrades, I am Gaberin, you may refer to me as Gabe if you wish. I'm cheered to meet you all here. I look forward to our adventures ahead. He looks around at the excited group clustered around the table and raises his ale in toast to Rori then takes his seat.
(Willfred comes back to the table with Jack in tow, who is carrying a round of ale for you all. Jack serves you all your drinks as Willfred looks on, a smile on his face. The Tavern owner looks you all over appreciatively.)
"Well, it looks like Master Craig has done it again. Though I do think he was feeling a little creative this time."
(He sees you all looking at him, and senses he may have spoken out of turn.)
"I mean, of course, that lots of adventuring parties have found each other thru Craig's list. He's very good at making matches. Forgive me for being so bold, but I think he's done well bringing you 3 together. Very interesting, very interesting indeed. I mean, this Druid (gestures to Gaberin) is so tall, he might just intimidate your enemies with height! And this Barbarian (points to Jubilee) looks like she could do quite a bit of damage with those Axes. And a Bard (gestures towards Roarke) to boot! Your nights will never lack excitement with a Bard in your camp.)
(Willfred clears his throat.)
"Well, enough about that. Please enjoy your ale, and let me know if I can help in any way."
(Willfred and Jack back off and let you all get to know each other. The ale loosens you up somewhat, and you slowly start to get used to each other. Mostly. About 45 minutes or so pass along this way, when...
Suddenly, a large, red-headed man in a black leather apron bursts thru the door, his muscular arms bleeding from some pretty gnarly gashes. A look of panic and terror is on his face, which is dirty and starting to swell up and bruise. He looks like someone beat the hell out of him.
“Bess!” he yells. “They got my Bess!”
He drops down to his knees and starts sobbing as the crowd starts to gather round.
(What do you all do?)
OOC: My apologies for the delay and the flakes, I was trying to give them the most time possible to return. A sad part of the game. I may have a 4th to add later and we can retcon them in. Thanks for your patience!
Gaberin: I rise and stand near the crowd to observe the people and hear what has happened. When at all possible I watch the doors and keep my back to a wall or post.
Muttering under her breath, "Right as I thought it would be a normal night."
Rori stands, giving a glance to Gabe to maintain vigilance, and begins to weave through the small crowd toward the man. "Pardon me, 'scuse me."
As she reaches him, she kneels on one knee and in a calm voice says, "Sir, wish I could've made your acquaintance a different way, but who's this Bess and who took her?"
Jubilee stands, taking in the scene before her but not moving from the table. She feels the training that has been ground into her very essence from time as a soldier and looks to the wounds on the man's arm to see are if they are recognizable to her.
(While Gaberin keeps his distance, Rori and Jubliee take a more active roll, checking on the man, asking him questions and checking his wounds. The wounds seem to have been made by a variety of weapons.
The group help the man to a nearby table and begin questioning the man as the rest of the tavern gathers round, murmuring noisily. The man is too distraught to answer properly, taking deep breaths and trying to compose himself.)
"Rickard! What's happened?"
(Willfred rushes to the side of the fallen man, who is still very distraught. His injuries, though numerous, do not seem to be the main source of his despair. He tries to compose himself, trying to answer in between sobs.)
"Gob... goblins. They broke into my workshop. I-I-I tried to stop them... I think I even killed one of them. But there were too many. They stabbed at me and beat me with clubs and... when I woke up my daughter was... gone!"
(Rickard quietly sobs as the crowd murmurs their disbelief. WIllfred starts explaining things to the party, who is gathered around.)
"Rickard is the Blacksmith here. And Bess, sweet little Bess is his 8 year-old daughter. She means the world to him. All he has ever since his wife passed a few years ago."
(A look of sudden realization appears on Willfred's face, a smile on his lips.)
"Rickard, my friend, don't despair! Look here! These here fine folks (he points towards the party) are skilled adventurers!"
“You-you’re adventurers? Please, you’ve got to help me! If I lost my Bess, I… I… I can pay you! I don’t have much, but I would give all the gold I have in the world if you can get my daughter back to me safely. Will you help me? Please, I beg you!”
(Rickard throws himself, both figuratively and literally, at the feet of the party, begging for help. The party begins to talk amongst themselves.)
DMs note: I hope I can ask a favor from you guys. Can you please go into your signature and add your character like I have to the bottom of your posts? It's under Profile, Edit Profile, and there's a spot there for Signature. It would help me remember who's who faster. Thanks a lot.
Jubilee steps back from the man slightly to get him off of her boots and break from the crowd. She looks up from the shrunken man at Rori's feet, grabbing a drink and cloth from a nearby table before kneeling down to hand them to Rickard.
"Try to catch your breath."
She turns to face her party members.
"It would be the right thing to do, no matter the cost. I don't know the area well so if there are goblins, we should ask Wilfred or anyone else who might know about known hideouts. How do you guys feel?"
While Jubilee fetches the table cloth and drink, Rori carefully runs her hand a few inches away from Rickard's clothes and mumbles an incantation under her breath: the blood stains on his shirt slowly disappear. Bess is gone for the moment, but atleast he doesn't have to scrub out the reminder tomorrow. (Casted prestidigitation to clean the stains)
Feeling her coin purse is light, but knowing the grief of losing someone you love, Rori nods in agreement to Jubilee. She takes in Rickard's state, wishing her father cared about her that much when he was alive, and lets out a light sigh, "I reckon this is going to be a long night."
Looking up at Jubilee, "I like where your head's at, asking about hideouts is good. Maybe after some questioning around here we can swing by Rickard's place to go over the scene. Sounds like he got in a few good licks, there might be an indicator of where these goblins came from. We're in this together now, I trust you and Gabe's judgement on what to do next.
Moving forward to be nearer Rori and Jubilee, Gaberin scans the crowd.
Looking back at Rori and Juilee he says " Either of you want to question Rickard, see if he can recall any additional useful information? I think we should go and take a quick look at the blacksmith shop. I'm good with 2 of us going to the shop and looking around to save time, or we can stay together, thoughts?
(The grateful Blacksmith goes around thanking the adventurers, alternately hugging and enthusiastically shaking the hands of the brave party who has agreed to help him. He looks a little bit better with the stains of his shirt having been magically wiped away. Wilfred looks pensive. The group asks Wilfred if he knows where these Goblins might be hiding out.)
"I... I haven't got a clue. I mean, I didn't even know there were goblins in these parts."
(Rickard, who is now a bit more composed, overhears you all.)
"I'm pretty sure there's a dead goblin in my workshop, maybe we can figure out where they went if we go back there? It's on the north edge of town."
(He looks at you all expectantly.)
DMs note: Please let me know if you want to do anything before heading to Rickard's shop.
"Willfred, just to be on the safe side, let us get 3 days water and rations. If for some reason we need to leave from there, We'll send Rickard back here after we look around."
"Ladies, anything you need from here? Never know if we're coming back right away..."
Rori downs the last of her ale and slings her lute over her back, "I have no business left here; Bess is out there and I have a sinking feeling time is of the essence. I like your idea to collect rations Gabe, then we should set out to the workshop in haste."
Looking at Rickard, "Your workshop is on the north side of town, yeah? I assume that isn't too far a journey considering you came here first. I'm ready to go."
Jubliee stands stiff and awkwardly straight from the hug she didn't want but knew that the man needed to give. Looking around the tavern to see if there might be anything else of use to them. She grabs her backpack and tosses it over her shoulder, sliding her other arm through.
Talking aloud to no one in particular, just as a way to keep her thoughts together.
"We should find or make a map to keep our bearings and take notes as we learn more."
She faces her new companions.
"Rori and Gabe, though we are a new party and trust is earned and not given, please know I have your back. Let us be on our way."
(At Gaberin's behest, Wilfred sends Jack to fill up everyone's canteens and wraps up a few food provisions. Everyone gives Jack a small coin for the items and for his troubles before they head out of the tavern.
The group scouts the area as the Blacksmith leads the way. They see a few townspeople here or there, but not anything that looks dangerous or strange. The party follows Rickard to his workshop on the North edge of town. The signs of a struggle are everywhere: Broken pots litter the floor, splintered chairs and tables, etc. A goblin lays dead on the floor, a poker thus his chest. The layout of his workshop is roughly as shown:
"Well, here it is. I haven't really had a chance to look things over, I went for help as soon as I came to."
DM's Note: You are free to look around. A little note about Spoilers: When you get a spoiler, keep in mind that this is information only you know. It's up to you to convey that information to the rest of your party. If you don't tell them, they don't know.
Also, remember, if you're going to roll, the difference between Perception (I look and see...) and Investigation (I see and deduce...). You have to be specific about what you're looking at when you make an Investigation roll. You can't just say, "I Investigate the room." You have to say, for example, "I Investigate the Workbench." Rori steps through the threshold and let's out a low whistle, "Well, you got that one pretty good Rickard. Anyone want to check the body or its pockets? I don't really want to touch it."
