(Suddenly I question the architectural skill of giants. 14 is half under 17, half under the hallway. 3 appears to be a row of cells under the Great Hall. That might be a good choice for a Rancor pit. Each square is 10 feet.)
"Having surveyed the stronghold," says Thar "I think a seemingly nice spot to put the chain gate would be downstairs in the small room (14) unless anyone has a better idea."
OOC: Is the thickness of the floor/roof between the upper and lower levels 20' or less? And where in the upper level would be directly above that room?
I would think more than 20' (I assume this is about the Passwall spell) but once you pick your room you could do a bit of excavating above it to get the distance down to just under 20'

The giants used captured dwarven slaves for the work. They, of course, made many sub-optimal decisions to screw them over.
Merry Christmas to all. This place has been dead but I haven’t worried too much as I’m tied up with family stuff over Christmas/New Year. Come the New Year you will need to move this along.
And welcome all to 2019. My family came together from all over for the festive times. A fantastic experience to spend a good deal of time with my grandson who was delightful, surprisingly so for a 20 month old. But they have now dispersed and life returns to normal, quite quiet actually.
(Mine are still in town, but I've got to get back to work tomorrow. I'll be back to posting too much once I'm back to work. No time for games during vacation.)
Given there are 10 days to prepare Thar tries to determine if he could use Stone Shape multiple times to excavate some of the castle floor, say create a spiral staircase to help with his Passwall "attack from above plan".

Yes, this is doable.
As the day of the full moon arrives Arya starts chivying you all to get ready "I have a cunning plan... We set up our chain ready to connect to the frost's giants gate. I'd like all of us to be invisible and as it lasts an hour there's a good chance of it still being active when the gate connects. We step through, Thar (still invisible) disconnects their end from our gate and reconnects to that node near the steading. We step through to the node and pull the chain through with us. What could possibly go wrong?"

Thar and Fah'lin are chipping in to cover the expense for the fort, spend 200gp each and Arya will put in the remaining 400.
Fah'lin checks out that row of ten foot rooms under the Great Hall (3) in the foundations.

Those are the cells where you found the elf prince, the merchant and the castle steward.
Aeliarin nods his head in agreement. "If I wanted to live in a glorified farmhouse, I would have stayed at home."
"Welcome, guests, then." Fah'lin says.

Gijigume wanders around the place, getting to know it and checking that the walls (floors and ceilings) are all solid.
You find no new secret doors. The only one hides the stairs from above ground to below ground.
Aeliarin spends the time writing his memoirs.
