Irob finds some residual rot grubs but disposes of them easily. When he is satisfied, Yga takes over. Nothing of value is found on the corpse, seemingly all valuables were taken prior to rot grubs moving in.
There's a small note under the body, stained with blood and dead body juices. Looks like the smugglers looked at it and discarded it.
We've been hired to track down a (smudge) man. Human sized, but made of materials, metal mostly I think but they were a bit vague. Should stick out like dog's balls anywhere it goes anyway so might be hiding out in ruins or abandoned houses. If you find it drag it back to our HQ, operational or (smudge), doesn't matter. I'm sending (big smudge)north, Sanders east and Vin west, so you head south. Go as quick as you can, start at the southernmost point of the continent, look around, and then work your way back north. Hopefully (smudge) won't expect. This is a big pay for all of us if we find it.
Bernard Stanton General Grey Griffons Mercenary Company"
"They're not a big outfit anymore. During the war they were a proper mercenary company but attrition wore their numbers down. Generals were more likely to throw mercenaries into dangerous battles because if they die, they don't have to pay and protects their own troops. Then the war ended and they had no need to continue recruiting. Now the Grey Griffons are more like an adventurers' guild who do smaller jobs. They still have a good reputation though."
"I believe they may be searching for me. I had anticipated to be pursued however this far south and this soon was not expected."
He pauses for a moment seemingly lost in thought.
"I should take greater means to disguise myself if these individuals and perhaps others are looking for me. My past has some... Complications that I would appreciate not having to deal with again."
"Seems they were trying to surprise you, perhaps overtake you and start at Southmoor and work their way back north, coming from an unexpected direction. The note seems to indicate he was alone, but he might have had colleagues."
"I'm not sure if it fits, but maybe this guy's plate mail and clothing could be a good disguise....and a nasty surprise if we meet his colleagues," Yga intimates her support of Irob if his past catches up with him....
"I believe his colleagues will be stationed somewhere in salt marsh so we should anticipate their presence. I doubt they'll be sent too far from each other. As for the armour, I am at this time, incapable of wearing it. Perhaps in the future but for now my cloak will suffice."
"Additionally as I'm sure you've noticed, my spellcasting makes me quite obvious"
He casts a small prestidigitation cantrip to highlight the glowing gears that appear behind him and mesh into each other, turning as the spell releases
"There is no easy way to hide that, save for not casting spells"
He pauses for a long time.
"Perhaps when we have grown in strength, those of you willing to aid me can assist an offensive maneuver and hunt the hunters down. I have much I would like to.. discuss.. with them"
Yga tries to find the secret door she knows is there, but the dust and grime on the walls mask it well. But she knows how the last one worked, so the gnome cleric pushes stones until one gives and the secret door swings open. As expected, it opens into the room the smugglers were staying in.
This unlit chamber (the torches which lit the room previously have gone out) was once a large cellar, but it has since been converted into living quarters. Ten crude beds stand along the south wall, each with a wooden locker at its foot. A long wooden trestle table ringed by rickety stools dominates the center of the room. Metal cutlery, cups, and dirty plates sit atop the table. A cookstove is installed near the table, and evidence of recently cooked meals sits in pots atop it. A large ham hangs from a loop of twine near the stove. A sturdy set of stairs leads to a trapdoor in the ceiling above. There are two wooden doors in the east side of the room. The door leading to a room north appears normal, but the one east has a wooden bar across it, held in brackets on the frame and the door itself. The sign for “DANGER” is written in smugglers code on that door.
Yga prepares a bottle of holy water ready to throw into the "do not enter" door, but stands 10 feet back and a bit to the side. If there is anything beyond that door it would not be living...
Susk gives the door a good going over. Nothing not immediately obvious is found. Due to shoddy workmanship the bar across the door appears to be stuck in the brackets, so will need a bit of force to lift up.
Whilst Susk checks the door, Zaerra whispered quietly to Irob, "We all have things in our past that we would rather not revisit. You have proven yourself to me as a trustworthy type, you have my support." With that she steps to the side a little, ensuring she has good line of sight into the room once the door is opened.
She prepares a quick cantrip of the warm welcoming kind just in case.
With a nod and a grunt of understanding, Rask approaches the door. "With great strength comes great responsibility" she muses to herself. She inspects the iron bar and determines it's a job that will require her to holster her weapon temporarily. "Cover me," she hisses over her shoulder. Turning back to the door, Rask attempts to lift the bar out of the brackets.
Rask easily lifts the bar free of the brackets, caked dirt and grime falling away. The door has no lock so it seems to be a simple matter of turning the dark iron handle and pushing the door open into the room.

Yga will read the note aloud.
The note reads (some ink is unreadable):
"Markus,
We've been hired to track down a (smudge) man. Human sized, but made of materials, metal mostly I think but they were a bit vague. Should stick out like dog's balls anywhere it goes anyway so might be hiding out in ruins or abandoned houses. If you find it drag it back to our HQ, operational or (smudge), doesn't matter. Yakeerk has heard of the Grey Griffons.
"They're not a big outfit anymore. During the war they were a proper mercenary company but attrition wore their numbers down. Yga gives a sidelong glance to Irob, "Hmmm, sounds like someone I know....what say you Irob?"
Yakeerk looks at the note.

Yga will have a look for the suspected secret door, perception roll: 5
Yga tries to find the secret door she knows is there, but the dust and grime on the walls mask it well. But she knows how the last one worked, so the gnome cleric pushes stones until one gives and the secret door swings open. As expected, it opens into the room the smugglers were staying in.
This unlit chamber (the torches which lit the room previously have gone out) was once a large cellar, but it has since been converted into living quarters. Ten crude beds stand along the south wall, each with a wooden locker at its foot. A long wooden trestle table ringed by rickety stools dominates the center of the room. "Let me just check the doors before we head in any further, we didnt get a chance when we down here last"
With that he will head to inspect the "DANGER" door as obviously this is where this group would head.

Rask moves to stand to the side but within reach, her maul in hand and ready for action.
Yakeerk stands with bow and arrow ready. Now just need someone to open the door.
Irob will prepare a firebolt and stand as far away from the door as possible while still maintaining a line of sight. He will look to Rask:
"While I don't wish to put any of us in the way of danger I think you may need to knock that bar out of the brackets"
Strength check 15.
Rask easily lifts the bar free of the brackets, caked dirt and grime falling away. The door has no lock so it seems to be a simple matter of turning the dark iron handle and pushing the door open into the room.
