You make your way south on the little strip of beach, heading toward Baldur’s Gate. However, the beach ends at a path that forces you away from the water and up a steep incline. The night begins to slip away as gray periwinkle smudges the eastern sky. In time, your ascent brings you back to the carriage road linking the casino and inn to the Black Gate. Not far up the road, you find the carriage that had dropped you off, your driver sleeping with a loaded crossbow in his lap. He blinks awake and clambers down to open the carriage door for you, and you relax against comfortable cushions within. The horses knicker and blow in annoyance at the early morning errand, but soon pull you through the Black Gate and into the city, dropping you off at the tavern where you first met Verite Kye. A runner is roused to fetch Verite, and not long before sunrise, you find yourselves across the table from her once again. The tiefling plainly schools her features not to betray too much hope.
“I… thought I might not see you until tomorrow… do you have… news?,” she asks.
(Short rest or Long rest, would you say? Erudisia would exit the amulet after whichever she has the time for with the bag of holding in hand. She’d then remove the money needed for the resurrection for the were-jackals. Just on the off chance of a double cross).
Erudisia discovers that she is unable to remove anything from the bag of holding given to the group by Verite! Some spell beyond her ability to break has made it a one-way portal.
“Oh Faenya’s darts,” says Erudisia inside her genie space. Ultimately she leaves with the bag of holding in hand. There are five of them, and she does not feel too distrustful of the Tiefling who commissioned them to steal from a casino…
Erudisia fastens the amulet again around her neck.
“I heard your struggle and troubles. Your methods were ingenious and your execution flawless. Trust yourself, you are an exemplar,” she says to Bell, Meredith and Little One.
(Short rest or Long rest, would you say? Erudisia would exit the amulet after whichever she has the time for with the bag of holding in hand. She’d then remove the money needed for the resurrection for the were-jackals. Just on the off chance of a double cross).
For Erudisia, a short rest. Not quite a rest of any kind for the others.
Verite regards Erudisia with excitement. The Moonshae Lady’s words seem to indicate triumph, as does the bag of holding in Erudisia’s grasp, which, though still light in the warlock’s hand, bulges with promise. Verite seems focused on it while she awaits further details regarding your mission. And, it seems she is waiting for the bag to be returned to her, although she does not go so far as to reach for it.
Meredith did not do anything overt but she leaned in slightly and her voice grew serious, " We want to ensure that Marliza gets the money she needs to help her friends. I don't know if the gnome is still on this plane or even alive.....someone seemed very upset with him about the money being gone."
…I also want you to steal back six thousand gold pieces, a fraction of what he stole from me.
I can provide a rough map of the casino, which is only an hour away up the coast by foot, and a bag of holding for transporting coin. I will pay you each 200 gp. 100 now and 100 afterwards. I make no claim on additional coin or items you acquire within the casino.
Erudisia holds the bag forward for the Tiefling to take.
“I can understand that trust will no longer come easily to you, after what you have suffered at Togglepocket’s direction.
”Inside you will find the statue, and your 6,000 stake. Marliza will take the rest of the coin. It is time to reward our trust, as yours never was.”
(“Also, he was treating with a fierce fiend. Beware. Those who pact with greed are not easily freed.”)
Verite takes the bag gently from Erudisia and motions for everyone to sit at the same table around which you met the prior evening. She whispers an almost inaudible phrase, and a pair of eyes appear on the bag's surface. They move in opposite directions, all around the bag's circumference, before stopping to face Verite directly. They seem to look her up and down, then blink, then disappear. This recognition seems to have been the trigger for the release of items in the bag. Verite turns it upside down and gently spills its contents out on the table's surface. The spoils are counted to everyone's satisfaction.
6000 gp are stacked on the tiefling's side of the table. From this sum, she removes 100 gp for each of you, and for Marliza and Little One before returning the remaining 5500gp into the bag.
“I… words are not enough. But I am grateful. And happy that there is indeed additional coin and more for your efforts. I thank you. Thank you.”
She asks for a more detailed description of what seems to have befallen Togglepocket. Her expression is neutral, although you can see a dozen emotions crossing her face though she tries to maintain a calm facade. She takes a deep breath and seems to have found the closure she sought.
“What remains on the table is yours. I make no claims,” she says.
3000 gp are counted and pushed to Marliza. A small crate big enough to hold the 30 lbs of coin is found, the 3000 are slid into it, and its lid hammered shut. The box will offer sturdy transport of the gold to the Outer City. Marliza’s expression is hard to read. The corners of her eyes moisten as she stares, seemingly, at the opposite wall. She seems overwhelmed.
An additional 50gp for each of you is left over, along with a number of Unusual looking items, a different one of which seems to excite and attract each of you…
“Marliza,” says Erudisia, “we’re happy to have helped you, though of course, we’re happy to never say how. Good luck, and congratulations. If you or your patron ever wish to visit us in Candlekeep, we would love to see you and make her introductions.”
Verite stands to go. “I have a horse in back, outfitted and ready to leave the city.” She looks at the runner who fetched her, hands him a few gold and ruffles his hair.
“D’ya have to go miss Verite?,” he asks, and she nods in response. She then turns to exchange a long look with Marliza, whose dark eyes fall after a moment. But the tiefling’s gaze continues curiously, and one of the gambler's brows slightly quirks before she turns to the three of you and Little One. She then regards you for another long moment.
“I think we will not see each other again,” she says. “I leave for distant lands and do not expect to return to the Sword Coast. But though my feet have dragged sullenly for years now, I will travel with a lighter step. For the worst of my wounds suffered in the west is healed – or, begins to heal – by the calming salve of justice dealt on my behalf. And by the repayment of a debt earned without honor or consent. For this, I thank you. Farewell, Scholars of Candlekeep.”
Bowing solemnly, she departs.
Marliza, with her box of gold on the table in front of her, seems ill at ease, smaller, almost hidden behind the box, making eye contact with no one. In response to Meredith’s farewell, she swallows, clears her throat. “I…,” she falters before trying again. “Wouldn’t you wish to receive Korvala’s thanks yourselves?,” she asks. “You could come with me back to the Amberdune pack…”
“Farewell and safe travels, Verite,” says Erudisia, watching her depart.
After turning to Marliza and hearing Meredith speak, Erudisia considers the young woman with her tired eyes. “You gambled and you won Marliza. What worries you about returning to Korvala, victorious. Will she not accept your funds; is this not less unjust than the gingwatzim?”
She pauses. “Only, make sure the resurrection is not performed by one associated with the lower Outer Planes, considering who Togglepocket was in league with.”
“I, I… I am scared to carry so much gold, by myself, through the city. If… if some… one tried to take it away, then this would have just been a big waste of all of our time.” Her eyes remain downcast, meeting yours only briefly. In that moment, you see emotion and conflict. You’ve found her to be fairly intrepid, so perhaps she does not like needing to ask for help.
" I mean.....we're not the most imposing body guards but I think we should be able to escort you......Little Ones been through the wringer so he should probably go rest up."
" We need a name.......like The Holy Trinity or The Three Furies or Librarians Who Lunch or something........."

" Uh, we'll just wait til we are all here."
" Oh, Erudisia, there you are!"
She turned back to regard the tiefling, " All good, no problems at all......casino is likely under new management...."
Bell smiles as she hands back the chess piece to Erudisia. "I tried to keep it safe."
