Meredith barely skips a beat, scooping up the book and shutting it again as she edges around the study table and the ponderously huge book statue suspended above it with rusted chains. The words, “BE CURIOUS” catch her attention once again, but only for a fleeting instant as she dashes through the east shelves toward the stairway up to the surface.
Bell’s magic missiles strike the creature for 14 HP force damage. Bell is pleased to see that whatever ghostly defenses Shemshime possesses, they do not extend to force damage and the bolts hit with full strength, for 12HP total damage.
Erudisia’s thunderous blast hits the spirit, still trapped within her pillar of wind. “Noooooooo!!!!,” it screams in their minds as Bell and Erudisia together see the ghostly form ripped to pieces, and for a long moment, it is gone.
But then, laughter in the two women’s heads, a gleeful, reproachful sound. “No. No, no, no, girls,” it says. “Your luck has changed, and so has my mind. Now I’m going to kill you…”
The pieces of shadow whip suddenly back together, and there it is again, plainly weakened, but fully formed and seemingly, your arcane intuitions tell you, due to an innate necrotic boon, unable to die.
(Wait for it… 1-3: Bell / 4-6: Erudisia… 6)

Shemshime, though slowed by Erudisia’s gusting wind, glides indomitably through the air until it is immediately in front of her. Its sharp-fingered hand lashes straight out, its fingers slipping through the warlock’s hair and cupping the back of her head like a lover. But the touch threatens to halt the workings of Erudisia’s mind in a single instant as the evil spirit’s cackling laughter fills Erudisia’s and Bell’s minds.
To hit vs Erudisia: 18
If successful, Erudisia suffers 19 HP psychic damage.

And if that doesn't work there's also a forge around here somewhere.......
Erudisia screams, and screams and at some point her scream becomes the song and the song becomes her scream and it hard to see even the slightest difference between the colour of the spirit turned real and Erudisia’s form, so pale and mottled and grey is the Moonshae scholar. She is as close to death as perhaps she has ever been. (HP: 1/31).
Though it is perhaps foolish, the final spark of Erudisia’s mind grasps at the driftwood of an arcanum, small and fragile, and tries to pull herself above the waves.
She casts suggestion, and though her words say “causes grief, takes no blame,” the instruction is clear. Sheshime is not supposed to be so active and visible a participant in her own horror story. She is meant to hide, and not be witnessed and not be direct. Sheshime must hide, she must go, she must not be here, where the failing Scholar’s Shield are.
(In the unlikely event Sheshime is not immune to charm. Wis save 14).

Erudisia knows with certainty -- her patron has grilled her on this fact a hundred times -- no one can simply shirk off the power of her spell. Yes, they can fight it, yes, they can defend themselves against it. But though her power is strong and her casting, true, there is no effect! To Shemshime, it is as if nothing had happened. The soulless spirit is immune to being charmed, and merely cackles.
"Oh no. What a waste!," its voices burbles in Erudisia's mind. "Such magics are meant for beings with souls, and I take no part in such weakness. HahahahaHAHAH!"

Meredith rushes into the Temple of Oghma, a modest stone edifice dedicated to the god of knowledge. A bronze bell hangs on a rack near the door -- rung when the beginning of services is announced -- and four large stone gargoyles perch on the cornices, gazing down protectively. The caretaker of the temple, a human priest of Shou descent named Lorekeeper Kei Tigersteel, is there, along with Valna Oxylanthrinn, who, we remember, had rushed into the temple following the Whispers of Violence episode, assisting the many injured. Of course, this is news to Meredith, for it was Erudisia who earlier left the Firefly Cellar in pursuit of K’Tulah. Erudisia might be shocked to see that there are now many injured avowed in the temple, two dozen, with wounds still untended, huddled next to each other, shivering in the cold, though also eyeing each other warily, fearful of another melee breaking out.
Valna Oxylanthrinn’s shining azure eyes flick up immediately to Meredith, emanating cold anger. But that baleful glare shifts to the book the bard is holding and the Keeper of the Emerald Door’s lips pull back in a sneer. Her impenetrable gaze flashes back to Meredith. “EXPLAIN YOURSELF!,” the Keeper barks, her tall staff crackling with arcane energy. All eyes are on Meredith, even the wounded, and those nearest to the bard scrabble across the temple's mosaic floor in terror of the book she holds, which still gives off necrotic blackness like fetid breath.

Horrified eyes dart toward the door through which Meredith entered, the path from the temple to the Firefly Cellar. Some exchange worried glances. Could the dark spirit have followed her? But a tremulous voice pipes up. The gnomish clerk from the House of the Binder. “B…b…broken, you say? P…p…perhaps I can fix it?” You’re not sure if his stutter is from fear or the cold, but though he seems tiny and fearful, his bright eyes touch on Shemshime’s Bedtime Rhyme with curious interest. “Why… this is of gnomish make…,” he observes. Forgetting his fear, he steps forward and takes hold of the book, then opens it. The music box plays and the pop-up scenes display as they had before, sticking and clicking at the end, as it had before. “What’s this all about then?,” he wonders aloud, comparing the round millstone embossed on the cover to the pop-ups and scratching his head.
He looks up at Valna Oxylanthrinn. “Should I fix it? Looks like it hasn’t played the whole thing yet.”
The Keeper of the Emerald Door, whose quiet rage has simmered during the gnome’s quick examination of the book, replies, with seething irony, “Go ahead. How much worse could it get?” She turns to Meredith. “The others of the Scholar’s Shield are in danger? Let us see what form this curse takes at its center.” With her robes rustling behind her, she steps quickly out the door and is gone.
