Grey says "I can cast Detect Magic. If we don't mind waiting 10 minutes, I can cast it as a ritual, save a spell slot for healing. I can also cast Identify but that requires me to touch it."
Nico couldn't help but stare at the gemstone as Grey worked his incantation. "That'd probably go for a pretty penny on the black market," he thought to himself before shaking his head with a smile. He'd only been a smuggler, not a thief--but he'd worked with plenty, and could only imagine the sort of reactions such a jewel would cause among his former acquaintances.
Razzec asks, "Is it just me or does the gems colors look like they are moving from the inside and not from the changing of the light?" He hesitates to get any closer after what happened with the grubs. He shivers a lil thinking about what could have happened if even just one of them had found a weak spot in his armor. He starts looking over the rest of the room from where he's at (not moving yet) and figures he'll let the more magically inclined amongst the group handle figuring out what's up with the gem.
{{Is there anything else we can tell about the room itself, I know the gem is the only thing magical in it currently, besides us}}
Anton eyes the gem suspiciously as Grey and the others work to determine what it is. “I don’t know, we never got a description of the soul stone, but this seems too easy. Something of obvious value protected by nothing but a rotted door. I have a collapsing pole, but am reluctant to even push it from the pedestal until we know more."Anton moves carefully across the room and examines the door on the far side. Investigation or Perception same roll: 14.
Razzec doesn't want to leave Anton alone in case there are any other surprises and follows after him trying to see if there is anything else in the room or if he can see anything special about the pedestal the gem is sitting on. Razzec also tries to recall if he's ever read anything about the soul gem within any of the books from when he was learning to be a rune knight, or about this particular castle within those books.
Grey will share that the key is beyond the door. "We can head towards it or continue with the skull. I can cast Identify as a ritual if we want to wait another ten minutes?"
Unless someone objects, Grey will place his hand on the skull [stupid idea?] and begin to ritual cast Identify.
Razzec says to the group, "Let's all group up on the other side just in case. I can't tell if the gem is just shimmering a lot or if there's something inside of it. We might want to tie a rope to Grey so we can pull him away from it should anything go wrong with his spell."

"Oooooooo I don't think touching it before knowing more would be wise...." Ember was staring at the gem like a moth going for an open flame.
Razzec says, "definitely take your time and save a spell slot."
{{ what color is the gemstone?
Game log - Perception - 23 }}
It is definitely magic. Conjuration and Evocation.
The color is clear-ish with color changing facets. Almost as if something were moving inside.

[Does anything else in the room or the door show as magic?]
Just the gem.

It is on a stone pedestal.
There is another door directly across from you.

Grey will offer Guidance to anyone who wants to investigate the pedastal and the runes.
Then holding the three parts of the key, he will cast Locate Object trying to determine the location of the next part. [concentrating for 10 minutes]
You feel the object is about 140 to 150 feet ahead and a little to the right.

Is ahead roughly in the direction of the unopened door?
Correct.

Nico shrugged. "I say go for it. What's the worst that could happen?"

Grey is about to say "A pit trap, undead attacking, ..." but stays focused on his spell casting.
