My current idea is that the town council of Barleyshire, a smallish agricultural town has called an open meeting about the cracks appearing in the large crystal that has appeared in the tow square over several months. Players would either be locals interested in town politics generally or the crystal in particular, outsiders drawn in by the crystal, or other outsiders asked their opinion by the council. In my mind, this is not the only crystal, but is the oldest, largest, and the first to develop cracks.
Character idea summary: Wreckzors - Plasmoid Brian_Avery - Shadar-kai Archfey Warlock* EmilieTherese - Human Paladin with a curse NaruTika61265 - Wizard WanderingSorcerer03 - Alec Buren_Badluk - Drow Emissary* Furujiru - cleric Kol_Drake - crystal transformation Davidd[d]* - Tiefling Bard Swiftgale - Wild magic(Crystal) sorcerer Olive_munhcer - artificer Angel_dePrime - Ghostbuster
There are a variety of concepts here, I think I have a bit more of an idea of what is going on now with the crystals so, I think it comes down to working with you guys on character ideas, narrowing down to 3-6 people and me working a little more on the region and world.

If you are still accepting applications, I'm very interested. Haha I've been dying to join a character driven group.
I realize that there is already a warlock applicant, but I've wanted to revive this character for a while.
Name: Corvus Blackwing
Class: Warlock the Fiend
Race: Aarakocra
General Backstory:
Ten years ago, a fire demon attacked the Blackwing tribe without warning, burning the entire village and it's inhabitants to the ground before disappearing without a trace. Despite the loss of his family and his right arm, Corvus rose from the ash with the fires of pain and vengeance burning within him. Grasping the charred remains of his arm, he cried out in agony and anger, vowing to avenge his home. To his surprise, a voice answered him, offering power. Anger forming determination, 12-year-old Corvus took the fiend's offer without hesitation.
Now blessed with the fiends magics, the young warlock traveled the land in search of any sign of the fire demon. Eventually, he started researching myths and legends, knowing that each had to originate from some sort of truth, even if it was just a shred. He searched for fabled artifacts, lost cities, and ancient scripts. Anything that could grow his power or otherwise reach his ultimate goal.
Many of these tales led him to dead ends, but those artifacts that he did find he collected. After all, he had to gain money somehow. Eventually, he managed to save up enough to travel to the capital. He had heard of skilled artificers there, ones knowledgeable in cybernetics. Fortunately, these rumors proved true.
To this day, Corvus's search continues, and his power grows ever stronger. One day, he will find his enemy and when that day comes, he will be ready.
Notes:
Corvus would definitely be interested in the crystal. He may have been asked to travel there for his knowledge of magical artifacts, though he isn't a very well liked individual. He generally keeps to himself, but he'll work with others when needed. He's likely well known in some towns simply because he sells artifacts. (He will work with the party, he could be described as a lone wolf, but a smart wolf knows there's an advantage to numbers. XD)
For personality, Corvus is fairly reserved, is quite irritable, and can be a bit rude, however he can be quite the smooth talker when needed, and very much tries to manipulate people to fit his needs. He's not above doing underhanded things to get what he wants, though he does have a personal code of honor.
For example, at one point he collected the loot for the previous party and found it couldn't be divided evenly. So he kept a larger portion for himself and for one of the party member's he valued over the others. However, at another point he could have easily stolen a large sum of money from the town they aided, but instead he returned it to the town's new leader.
Concerning his cyber arm. In the original campaign I used him in, I simply re flavored a shortsword's stats for his arm. It worked fairly well, so If you are fine with it I'd like to keep it that way. (The previous dm mentioned the possibility of upgrading it with magical items as the game continued, but I'll leave that up to you)
I also realize Corvus's age doesn't make sense with the 5e system. I'm not a fan of how short-lived some of these races are so we agreed on letting Aarakocra's live as long as humans. This can also be changed if needed.
Lol I'm pretty flexible with backstory and stuff.
...oh and here's a picture of him... Ignore the floating orb, that was a magic item from the previous game. (An Arcane focus that allowed him to use it without actually holding it.)

I am putting a pause on this campaign. I've decided I want to run it with 2024 rules, and will not have access to the PHB until 9/3/2024.
