Valji stands close by, preparing his spell. "Wait!" he says to Urokris. "Let me blast them with a spell while they are channeled in the hall beyond, then we run for the steps! Open the door on my mark, let me cast, and then shut it again."
If they agree, he casts his spell and holds the command word until the door opens - hopefully not at the same time that they are rushing towards it to force it open again... a wave of colorful lights spring forth from Valji's hands into the passage, washing over the enemies within 10 feet from the door (since the gnome is 5 feet away from the door himself...)

There is another crash against the door. (U:11,M:16), and then Urokris opens the door for a split second to let the spell past before slamming it closed again. He rushes out of the way as Skiaceq spills the oil, lighting a torch as he passes and then handing it to Skiaceq, getting his Greatsword ready for the rush of enemies.
The door slams open and the enemies rush out.
I really want to resolve this, but I gotta get off to work. Go ahead and use any reactions you have prepped (ie: do you want to do the honors Skiaceq? You have a torch and the oil awaits)
Skiaceq’s heart skips a beat when the door swings open directly in front of Valji. Reacting on pure adrenaline, he strokes his torch. As soon as the warlock sprints past, leaving a trail of oily footsteps, Skiaceq hurls the flame into the spreading pool. It seems to Skiaceq to sail in slow motion while he turns and bolts next to Urokris. The first kobold trough the door gets a frontrow seat to a searing eruption that engulfs the basement. The gust of blazing air singes a few of Skiaceq’s feathers.

As Quarion dashes from the door he notices that Urokris has stayed to hold the door, buying him a few seconds to position himself strategically instead of simply bolting directly up the stairs. He finds a large crate on the far side of the room from the door, away from the pool of oil that Skiaceq has created. He ducks behind the crate to get himself out of sight, and puts his hands on a dagger just as the door bursts open and Skiaceq pitches the torch to light the oil.

In the split second before Skiaceq lights the oil on fire, an ambush drake crashes through the door with a loud bang. The giant draconic lizard (over six feet long) seemed to be fitted with a war saddle on top of which is perched a single kobold readying a spear. As the door, no longer blocked by Urokris, swings open, the unlucky kobold who was in charge of holding the doorknob is flung bodily into oil with a wet squelching sound.
As the drake is sliding onto the suddenly slick surface, the torch hits its mark and suddenly fire fills most of the small basement. The drake roars in pain as it's entire body is licked by the hungry flames. It's rider doesn't find nearly as much protection from the fire as he would like from his lizard companion, and slaps impotently at his burning clothes, dropping his spear into the flames in the process. He moves to pick it up but quickly decides better of it, grabbing his sling and setting a stone, slinging it at the nearest guard. (A:17, D:6).
The drake, finally gaining it's footing, rushes headlong into the same guard, attempting to close it's teeth around the poor fools throat. (21, 6)
The kobold that had been flung to the side let's out a similar scream to the mounted one before rushing out of the flames. It looks around in anger for a target and, seeing the other guard, pulls a shiny stone out and mutters an incantation (Draconic: Lightning orb shoot forth) before firing a bolt of lightning into the guard closest to it. (A: 9, D:18).
Across the flame, two winged kobolds are rubbing their eyes vigorously, suffering from the effects of Valji's spell.
Vilja is up since they came through in the middle of the initiative order.
Urokris is to Skiaceq's left. They're front and center in front of the line of fire. To their right and back a bit is the guard that was attacked. His compatriot is 10 feet to his left, just to the left of Skiaceq. On the far left is a crispy kobold sorcerer. Quarion is on the far right, closest to the staircase. And there is a third guard near him.
The room is fairly spacious, around 30ft by 30ft. Wooden boxes litter the area, with some larger than the others, as well as a number of barrels. A couple or large, unlucky boxes in the flaming area already starting to smoke.
Valji can position himself on his turn, since we kind of just assumed he would enjoy not being on fire and went from there.
Valji casts his spell and runs for a crate outside of the rapidly spreading oil. With the creatures now in the open, he looks from behind the crate, speaks an word of power, and casts a fire bolt at the kobold magic user! "Feel the burn!!" the gnome shouts in glee! He then ducks back down behind the crate.

Valji:
Check your roll you used for Firebolt. It looks like it gives you 10 instead of 1d10 when it's not a critical hit, and 2d10 when it is.
Rolling for damage: 7
The firebolt hits the kobold sorcerer, who lets out a pained whimper as their flesh is further charred further than the damage already done by the burning oil.
Urokris, seeing the ambush drake and rider in his immediate vicinity, strikes out immediately against them. (A:8, D: 9) His sword makes a whooshing noise as the ambush drake narrowly gets out of the way.
As the lightning bolt dances just past him, the guard closest to the sorcerer gives a sigh of relief and then rushes the sorcerer, attempting to jab the kobold with his spear, only to miss. (A: 15, D: 2). Meanwhile, the guard who was bitten by the ambush drake stabs at the creature that attacked him with no luck(A:11, D: 2) while his friend from closer to the exit runs forward and attempts to skewer the rider (17, D: 3), who barks at him in anger.
The oil flames taking up half the room seem to be dying down a little, but the smoldering boxes seem to be catching fire, and smoke is starting to come from them. The air around the room seems heavy with smoke, though your sight is unhindered. Above your heads, you can hear the panicked sounds of civilians crowding into the castle, and from the wall outside the powerful voice of one of the guard's captains reaches your ears, "Hold fast men, we must protect the townsfolk. Aim for the wings! Ready! AIm! Fire!!"
The Urds are still blinded, so Skiaceq and Quarion are up.
Quarion stands up from behind the crate holding a dagger aloft, aims it at the chest of the kobold sorcerer, and releases it. Drawing a second dagger from his belt with his left hand, he throws that one too, aiming for the same spot.
The first dagger sliced easily through the scales of the kobold, but was too far left and slashed across the sorcerers right arm. The second lands solidly in the kobold's shoulder, and the sorcerer watches Quarion with murderous intent as he disappears behind the crate. Grasping it's diamond tighter to fight the pain, the kobold pulls out the dagger with its other hand.

The heat wards Skiaceq back, a few feathers falling away, half-incinerated by the blast wave. He shields his face, fearful to approach until the flames die down. Then an idea comes to him.
He swiftly withdraws the lasso he'd made from his pack and whirls it overhead before sending it sailing toward the sorcerer's stone.
If successful, Skiaceq will reel the stone in, then move to Valji and hand it to him. It might require attunement but at least we won't have those lightning bolts to deal with. Assuming it works.

Skiaceq deftly flings the improvised lasso, but it falls too far to the left of his target, and the sorcerer points at him and laughs in defiance. With the dagger in its hand, still dripping with its own blood, the kobold jumps on the guard who had tried to hit it with a spear, stabbing wildly. (Attack: 19 Damage: 6) The guard makes a sickening gurgling sound as the knife rips into his throat and he drops dead on the floor.
Rushing forward, the sorcerer draws upon his draconic power and, as the second he sees Quarion, he let's loose a yellow sphere of energy which goes careening in the bards direction, chanting in Draconic, "Sphere of force, smite my foes." (Attack: 16 Damage: 14) The attack just barely misses Quarion, instead hitting the crate which he was hiding behind. The crate is shocked by the force damage, and explodes in a rain of glass, red liquid, and wood shards as the smell of wine permeates the area.
Seeing this, the Kobold atop the drake whispers to his mount, "See the stick, boy? Go get the stick!" The drake turns and runs toward the fallen guard, and Urokris swings his greatsword at the drake as they try to disengage from him. (Attack: 23 Damage: 12) The beast roars in pain at the blade slices through his tough scales.
Reaching the fallen guard, the kobold grabs the spear as the turn around and charge Urokris. (Attack: 5 Damage: 4) while the drake attempts to bit at him. (Attack: 19 Damage: 6) While the drakes attack misses, the spear lodges itself underneath Urokris armor before being pulled out with a bloody popping sound.

Valji pops up from behind his crate again, eyes the enemy sorcerer, and flings another fire bolt at the creature. "Stop hurting my new friends, lizard-dog!" As long as his crate isn't on fire or smoking too much, Valji ducks back down behind it.

(OOC: Well, since I obviously can't get the combat dice roller to work, here's the Damage roll separately: 7)
The sorcerer looks to the gnomish wizard as he fires his firebolt, but it was already too late. A bit of the oil which had managed to remain unburned on the kobold caught fire, and it was engulfed in flames, its soul leaving the material plane with a bloodcurdling cry. As it falls to the ground dead, the diamond it had used to such great effect rolled out of its hand, skittering a couple feet away on the floor.
Feeling reinvigorated at the defeat of the most dangerous foe, Urokris attacks the ambush drake once again while the two remaining guards make stabs at the kobold atop it. (Urokris Attack: 20 Damage: 8)(Guard 1: Attack: 10 Damage: 6) Guard 1: Attack: 11 Damage: 5) Urokris attack finds purchase in the soft underbelly of the beast, and splits it in two as its stomach opens its contents on the floor. The guards thrust their spears at the kobold rider, but hit nothing but air as it jumps off it's deceased mount with inhuman agility.
As the last of the oil burns away, smoke is really beginning to fill the room, making it difficult to see clearly (Disadvantage on ranged attack rolls). The flaming crates are burning strong now, making occasional popping noises as their contents are destroyed. To one side of the room lies a dead sorcerer and a nearly decapitated guard with Quarion's dagger in his throat. Just past them is Skiaceq, lasso in hand, the far end of the rope lying impotently on the floor. In the center is now dead ambush drake and spear wielding rider, surrounded by Urokris and two guards. On the other side lies Quarion, hiding behind a now non-existent crate, and Valji, safely concealed and enjoying his victory.
Above, the scurrying feet have become more agitated, and yells of "Fire!" can be heard from the civilians. Coming from the wall, you can make out a sound that sounds eerily similar to a larger version of Urokris' breath attacks followed the screams of men.
As the glowing orb hurdles toward him, Quarion's life flashes before his eyes and he is momentarily paralyzed as the orb explodes into the crate in front of him and shards of glass and wine burst in all directions, a sharp piece of glass flying just past his neck. Later when he had a second to reflect on this experience he would realize that, had he not been frozen with fear he might have instinctively tried to dodge and gotten impaled in the process. Two brushes with death in the span of as many seconds is enough to make a man rethink his life choices.
But before he could do anything of the sort, a bolt of magical flame darts directly into the sorcerer who is now suddenly combusted. As the kobold who had nearly ended his life drops dead to the ground, the adrenaline driving Quarion's fear is suddenly repurposed to exhiliration. Pulling his seldom-used rapier from the loop on his belt, he charges toward the large lizard creature in the center of the room, intending to try to run it through. Just then, however, it drops to the ground, Urokris having beaten him to the puncture. Before Quarion even has time to reassess his options, a winged kobold comes charging out of nowhere, with the drake no longer separating them, and is impaled on Quarion's blade.
Spending inspiration on this attack.
Attack: 15 Damage: 8
The kobold drops to the ground dead and Quarion, stunned at the accidental slaying of this creature, takes half a second to notice a second winged kobold emerging from the tunnel before deciding to turn off to the side and duck behind another, unexploded crate.
The last winged kobold stares in disbelief at the loss of the ambush drake, sorcerer, and now Its other urd ally. Its leathery wings flap as it makes its way through the the smoke to its last remaining ally. The spear wielding kobold, backing up slowly against the combined threat of the two guards and Urokris, yells at the urd in Draconic. Hearing his command, the winged kobold takes to the smoky air and dashes up the stairs.

"What? You can't leave, you flying turd!" the gnome exclaims as the urd wings past him and up the stairs. Valji moves to the base of the passage and flings another ball of fire after the urd, hoping to bring it down before it got away and wreaked any more havoc.

Skiaceq’s head plumage stands up as Valji’s firebolt sails over the Urd an singes Skiaceq’s shoulder feathers. He squawks in surprise and stumbles forward, crashing into the Urd and feels his talons shear flesh.
The flesh turns out to be a pouch on the Urd's hip. In the awkward tangle, Skiaceq spins and grapples the startled kobold by the throat. (11)
(Ignore if unsuccessful:)
He slams the kobold into the wall, gripping its throat hard enough to restrict breathing. A razor beak leans into the creature's ear and barks, "What mission?"

Skiaceq's claws do quite a number on the urd as it passes, leaving it bloody and battered. As it flies up towards the entrance of the castle, Skiaceq attempts to grab it by the neck, but the kobold manages to dodge out of the way wit uncommon agility, hurrying off to whatever errand brings it into the castle.
The kobold who had been riding the drake, now staring down Urokris's greatsword and two guards, thinks better of his situation and runs toward the staircase, carefully taking the time to disengage with Urokris and the guards. The give chase, and Urokris slashes the kobold in half with a single blow, it's twitching head and torso landing with a wet thunk on the basement floor. (Attack: 11 Damage: 14)
Round 2: Quarion Fleeing Urd Skiaceq VIlja Urokris and Guards
The sounds of the dragon at the wall have quieted down... for now. The screams of "Fire" from above have been mixed in with screams about a kobold, and yelling about monstrous birds tangling with said kobold. It's becoming difficult to breath in the basement due to all the smoke. The urd is approximately 30ft from Quarion and Valji (with Skiaceq right on top of it) and escaping fast. Everything else is dead.
Valji stands close by, preparing his spell. "Wait!" he says to Urokris. "Let me blast them with a spell while they are channeled in the hall beyond, then we run for the steps! Open the door on my mark, let me cast, and then shut it again."

Skiaceq’s head plumage stands up as Valji’s firebolt sails over the Urd an singes Skiaceq’s shoulder feathers. He squawks in surprise and stumbles forward, crashing into the Urd and feels his talons shear flesh.
Opportunity Attack, Unarmed Strike: Attack: 8 Damage: 4
The flesh turns out to be a pouch on the Urd's hip. In the awkward tangle, Skiaceq spins and grapples the startled kobold by the throat. (11)
(Ignore if unsuccessful:)
He slams the kobold into the wall, gripping its throat hard enough to restrict breathing. A razor beak leans into the creature's ear and barks, "What mission?"
Skiaceq - Lvl3 | Aarakocra | Monk - Hoard of the Dragon Queen
Grapple evade: 9
Round 2:
Quarion
Fleeing Urd
Skiaceq
VIlja
Urokris and Guards
The sounds of the dragon at the wall have quieted down... for now. The screams of "Fire" from above have been mixed in with screams about a kobold, and yelling about monstrous birds tangling with said kobold. It's becoming difficult to breath in the basement due to all the smoke. The urd is approximately 30ft from Quarion and Valji (with Skiaceq right on top of it) and escaping fast. Everything else is dead.
Quarion is up.
